NEW YORK (AP) — Prize-winning fiction writer Deesha Philyaw, who struggled to find a publisher for what became her acclaimed debut “The Secret Lives of Church Ladies,” has a 7-figure deal for her next two books. Mariner Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, announced Thursday that it had signed up Philyaw and will publish her novel “True Confessions” in 2025. Mariner calls the book a “biting satire” of the Black church and “a deeply provocative” story about family, friendship and “sexual agency." Philyaw, who attended several different churches as a child, is centering the novel around a megachurch leader named Schar. It won the PEN/Faulkner Award, the Story Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Prize, and is being adapted for television by HBO Max.

Second-round bids for Simon & Schuster — which publishes boldface names like Stephen King — were due earlier this week, according to three people familiar with the negotiations, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the confidential sale process. News Corp . said Thursday it will cut about 1,250 positions, or 5% of its workforce, in the latest round of layoffs that have hit the media and tech industries in recent months. Rupert Murdoch's media company, which owns such names as The Wall Street Journal, the New York Post, Barron's and HarperCollins, said the tough marcoeconomic environment and higher interest rates have been hurting the company. On Thursday the company reported earnings results and said its quarterly revenue decreased 7% to $2.52 billion from the year-earlier period. Thomson noted that despite "the obvious global challenges," its professional information business at Dow Jones, the publisher of the Journal, saw revenue surge. Quarterly revenue for the overall Dow Jones segment rose 11% from the year-earlier period.

Fox News' Benjamin Hall returned to the airwaves after surviving a devastating attack in Ukraine. Hall lost an eye and a leg in a missile strike that killed two of his colleagues. While Hall survived, 24-year-old Ukrainian fixer Oleksandra "Sasha" Kuvshynova and Irish photographer Pierre Zakrzewski were killed.
