Stock for Sale by Cabinet Members
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( Lauren Hirsch | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
As President-elect Donald Trump takes an unconventional approach to stocking his cabinet, he’s also embracing one candidate pool that has plenty of precedent: Wall Street chief executives. On Friday, Trump picked Scott Bessent, a top economic adviser and the founder of Key Square Group, a hedge fund, to be his Treasury secretary. He previously tapped Howard Lutnick, the chief executive of the financial services firm Cantor Fitzgerald, for commerce secretary. Executives appointed to government positions are often required to make extensive stock divestitures, so the path from Wall Street to Washington can be particularly complex (while also offering an opportunity to avoid certain taxes). Bessent’s potential departure from Key Square may trigger “key man provisions” that often protect clients of hedge funds if top executives leave.

The results of the study, published Thursday in the journal Science, surprised whale researchers because they suggest the creatures can hear at much higher frequencies than expected. Scientists had never captured baleen whales and tested their hearing before because the animals are so large it could be dangerous to both the whales and researchers. Scientists know, from recordings and other observations, that baleen whales rely on hearing for social communication and that it’s important to their survival. Minke whales were a good target for audio testing because they’re the smallest baleen whale and a species whose hearing scientists don’t understand very well. He said the Minke Whale Hearing Project is on hold, but he’d like to pursue the topic further if he could secure funding.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court could further weaken the power of federal agencies by agreeing on Friday to hear a dispute over a Federal Communications Commission program that requires companies to subsidize telecommunications services in underserved areas. The FCC case raises two interlinked issues, one of which concerns the broad question of whether Congress exceeded its powers. The FCC turned to the Supreme Court after the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. The Supreme Court earlier this year issued a series of rulings against federal agencies, including one overturning a 40-year-old precedent that gave leeway to agencies to interpret laws written ambiguously. The Texas Board of Education narrowly voted Friday to allow Bible-based curriculum in elementary schools. Greg Abbott has voiced support for the lesson plans, which were provided by the state’s education agency that oversees the more than 5 million students in Texas public schools. Staci Childs, who is an attorney and a Democrat who voted against the Bible curriculum at Friday's hearing, said she believes it will be challenged in court. The new Texas curriculum follows Republican-led efforts in neighboring states to give religion more of a presence in public schools. The Texas Education Agency, which oversees public education for students statewide, created its instruction materials after a law passed in 2023 by the GOP-controlled Legislature required the agency to do so.

A recent Israeli airstrike in Syria killed a senior Hezbollah commander who helped plan one of the boldest and most sophisticated attacks against American troops during the Iraq War, according to a senior U.S. defense official. Ali Mussa Daqduq had been captured by U.S. forces following the 2007 raid in which militants posing as an American security team killed five U.S. soldiers. It was not immediately clear when the strike took place, where in Syria or whether it targeted Daqduq specifically, the senior defense official said. The elaborate raid Daqduq helped plan was carried out at a U.S.-Iraqi military complex in Karbala on Jan. 20, 2007. The facility was part of a series of compounds known as Joint Security Stations in Iraq, where U.S. troops lived and worked with the Iraqi police and soldiers.

Those travelers need to get their gates fast and the moving sidewalk wasn’t doing it. The economics of airport moving walkwaysSome experts point to high maintenance costs for removing the moving sidewalks. A group of German economics professors released an extensive study earlier this year about airport moving sidewalks. “The design of Denver International Airport is such that our moving walkways run where our gates are located. Aleinikoff said that while he doesn’t think moving sidewalks are inherently unsafe, they do require regular maintenance, and he says the “teeth” at the end of the moving sidewalks can be “pretty sharp.” Gow has, Aleinikoff said, made a full recovery.

A Boston man accused of punching and kicking a transgender woman during a violent attack on a train last month was charged with assault and other crimes, officials said. The unidentified victim, 41, told transit police that she was attacked on Halloween at the Maverick train station, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said in a news release. She reported being punched and kicked while the suspect, identified as Gregory Burnett, allegedly screamed derogatory terms at her such as "you’re not a woman, you’re a man," the DA said. She told transit police she believed she was attacked because of her gender identity. He was arrested on Nov. 12 and charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and civil rights violation with injury.

Under the Rome statute that created the ICC, its signatories are obliged to carry out arrest warrants, no matter the rank of the accused. Mohammed Deif was accused of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including for his role as a mastermind of Oct. 7. Some European countries have not said whether they would arrest Netanyahu if he visited, including a number of Israeli allies. Britain respects the independence of the ICC, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s spokesperson said, but did not say whether Britain would arrest Netanyahu. Netanyahu and the other two Israelis facing the arrest warrants join a group that includes Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been subject to an ICC arrest warrant over alleged war crimes in Ukraine since last year.

Generic drugs are the backbone of medicines prescribed in the U.S.: They account for about 90% of all prescriptions filled, according to the Association for Accessible Medicines, a trade group that represents generic drugmakers. Karoline Leavitt, a spokesperson on Trump’s transition team, declined to say whether Trump planned to grant an exemption on generic drugs. According to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, a group that tracks drug shortages, there are 277 active drug shortages in the U.S., half of which have persisted for two or more years. That’s different from generic drugs, which are cheaper and are often sold at close to the cost for which they were made, he said. What concerns Kesselheim the most is that tariffs could cause generic drug prices to skyrocket should more generic drug manufacturers drop out.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — Gunmen opened fire on passenger vehicles in a tribal area in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 38 people and wounding 29, the chief secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, said. Among the fatalities in the attack, which occurred in the Kurram tribal district, were a woman and a child, Chaudhry said, adding: “It’s a major tragedy and death toll is likely to rise.”Tensions have existed for decades between armed Shia and Sunni Muslims over a land dispute in the tribal area that borders Afghanistan. No group claimed responsibility for the incident. “There were two convoys of passenger vehicles, one carrying passengers from Peshawar to Parachinar and another from Parachinar to Peshawar, when armed men opened fire on them,” a local resident of Parachinar, Ziarat Hussain, told Reuters by telephone, adding that his relatives were traveling from Peshawar in the convoy. President Asif Ali Zardari, in a statement, strongly condemned the attack on passenger vehicles.
