ESPN replaced retired NBA reporter Adrian Wojnarowski with Shams Charania. AdvertisementAs many basketball fans have likely heard, the latest major NBA signing is Shams Charania to ESPN. The 30-year-old scoop master is replacing Adrian Wojnarowski, the genre-defining NBA reporter who had unexpectedly retired from the news-breaking business three weeks earlier. "It felt like it was a perfect way to solve this problem," said Burke Magnus, ESPN's head of content, in an interview with Business Insider on Wednesday. In the last few months, veteran NBA reporter Zach Lowe, host Samantha Ponder, and analyst Robert Griffin III each were let go.

And Kim Kardashian advocates for the release of the Menendez brothers. Chris Kofinis, a Democratic strategist, said Harris’ campaign is banking on Trump’s weaknesses being enough to carry Harris to victory. as the Harris campaign works to engage a group of voters threatening to defect over the Biden administration’s handling of the situation in the Middle East. People who are allergic to bees are usually allergic to yellow jackets as well, though the scale of the reaction may differ. Meanwhile, prosecutors in California said they are reviewing the Menendez brothers’ convictions to determine whether they should be resentenced and potentially released.

That marks a real GDP growth rate of 51.1% between 2010 and 2021, meaning an economic contribution that's 2.7 times that of the non-Hispanic population. Despite those large figures, some economists think that U.S. Latinas could be contributing more to GDP than the report's figure. A growing forceWhen it comes to labor force participation, Latinas are outpacing other groups, the BofA report showed. Conversely, the non-Latino labor force growth rate was negative that year, meaning that more people left the labor force than entered it. Kanokporn Tangsuan, a 42-year-old doctor in New York, died in October 2023 from anaphylaxis after eating at a restaurant at Disney Springs at Walt Disney World in Orlando, according to the lawsuit. This includes "any related disputes involving The Walt Disney Company, its subsidiaries, or its affiliates," the terms say. Piccolo agreed to the terms again when he logged into his Disney account to book tickets for Walt Disney World's Epcot park, Disney said. It has been a decades-long dream of corporate America: making it harder for aggrieved customers, workers and others to file lawsuits against companies seeking compensation for alleged injuries, mistreatment and other harms. Now Uber, the giant ride-hailing company that has been a magnet for such litigation, is pitching a plan that could fulfill that fantasy, at least in one state. The company is seeking to place a measure on Nevada’s ballot that would drastically limit the amount of money that lawyers could collect when they brought successful lawsuits. If the measure passes, it will make it less attractive — and in some cases financially impractical — for plaintiffs’ lawyers to file such suits.

This essay is part of What to Eat on a Burning Planet, a series exploring bold ideas to secure our food supply. Read more about this project in a note from Eliza Barclay, Opinion’s climate editor. That began to change in the 1990s as conservation groups fought to protect all kinds of life in the ocean from overfishing. U.S. fisheries may be much improved, but up to 80 percent of the fish and shellfish on American plates are imported. Much of it comes via obscure international seafood conglomerates that purchase fish from companies that have been accused of fishing illegally and profiting from forced labor, as the nonprofit Outlaw Ocean Project has documented.

Opinion | Trump’s Call to End Taxes on Social Security
  + stars: | 2024-08-09 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “Trump Dangles New Tax Cuts, Now for a Larger Voting Group” (front page, Aug. 8):Donald Trump’s latest campaign gambit, calling for an end to taxes on Social Security benefits, risks deepening a generational divide already evidenced by his indifference to man-made climate change and the more than $8 trillion added to the national debt during his term in office. This article cited an estimate of another $1.8 trillion added to the national debt over a decade if his proposal comes to pass. This does not include the impact of continuing the Trump-era tax cuts beyond their expiration date in 2025. The Brookings Institution estimated this would add another $2 trillion to the national debt by 2028. Arthur GreenbergExeter, N.H.To the Editor:As a liberal, I’d support Donald Trump’s proposal to eliminate taxes on Social Security if he would pay for it by eliminating tax breaks for private equity investors, hedge fund managers, and other special interest groups that bought tax breaks from Congress, and by taxing the fossil fuel industry and other polluters.

Instead of giving up, Colonel Sanders embraced the changes sweeping society. Even after he sold his company, he scorned the idea of retirement, staying on as a consultant and board member and embodying his Colonel Sanders persona in commercials and more. For decades, as a middle-class wife, mother and secretary living in Queens, she kept the pilot light on by taking tiny parts in tiny plays with tiny audiences. Wilder's "Little House" books, treasured by millions, became an enduring chronicle of family life on the American frontier. Even works of art that we think of as coming from the minds of lone creative geniuses were group efforts: Michelangelo, for example, recruited some 11 painters to assist him with the Sistine Chapel. Still, it’s only in the past few decades that attitudes around labor and the power of collectivism have shifted, making artists not only quicker to collaborate but also to give credit where credit is due. No matter the field, though, certain projects require an outsize number of bodies. Then, too, there’s the practical if unstated fact that, as artists and creative types, these people are in the business of pursuing perfection. Often, combining forces is the only way to get them closer to it.

With Harris at the top of the ticket, Democrats now see a chance to refocus voters on the issue and restore their margins among the abortion rights voters who had notably drifted away from Biden. In both the 2020 and 2022 campaigns, voters who backed legal abortion provided overwhelming support to Biden and other Democratic candidates. Across all of those battleground states, Biden this year was performing well below that level with voters who support legal abortion, polls have found. Those abortion rights voters also split about evenly on whether Biden or Trump was better for the economy. “Many of them aren’t single issue abortion voters; they are worried about the economy and inflation, they are worried about immigration,” McLaughlin said.

Instead, Biden’s campaign unraveled over the course of the next 24 days. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. That same day, ABC News reported that Schumer told Biden in their Saturday meeting that it would be best if he bowed out of the presidential race.

Last month, more than 5.7 million 16- to 19-year-olds participated in the labor market, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows, marking the highest teen employment rate in June since 2007. Economists say more teens have been drawn to the workforce because of a hot labor market with more attractive wages. And as long as the economy stays strong, experts aren't expecting a dip in teen employment on the horizon. Economists say the overall direction teen employment takes depends heavily on where the economy is headed. A perfect storm of a tight labor market, rising wages, high education costs and curbed immigration could result in continued higher youth employment, Nestler said.

Private efforts to nudge Biden to step aside continue

Milwaukee CNN —The public calls from Democrats asking President Joe Biden to bow out of the presidential race have quieted in recent days, but private efforts to nudge the president and his top aides continue, several Democratic sources told CNN. “Lose everything,” is how one Democrat described a polling memo Greenberg sent to Biden’s inner circle in recent days. “Devastating,” was the one word answer of a second Democrat close to the White House who is familiar with the Greenberg memos. Greenberg has been a leading Democratic pollster for decades and his work includes advising Bill Clinton’s two winning presidential campaigns. In his NBC News interview Monday, for example, the president again made clear he has no intention of stepping aside.

However, with a sticker price of nearly $80,000 per year, including tuition, fees, and room and board, Montiel-García, like many college hopefuls, needed financial aid to bring the cost down. Because of problems with the new form, financial aid award letters were delayed and some high school seniors, like Montiel-García, had trouble applying for any aid at all. In previous years, financial aid award letters were sent out at about the same time as admission letters, meaning students had several weeks to compare offers ahead of National College Decision Day, the deadline for most admitted students to decide on a college. Because of the extensive delays this year, some students won't get their final financial aid award letter until the end of August, the U.S. Department of Education said in a recent update. The high school graduate from Riverdale Park, Maryland, secured enough additional funding from the Maryland College Aid Processing System to afford his top choice school: Towson University.

CNN —The House Ethics Committee announced Tuesday that it will continue to investigate certain allegations surrounding Rep. Matt Gaetz, including whether the Florida Republican engaged in sexual misconduct, while ending other portions of the probe. In a rare statement updating its work, the bipartisan committee stated some of the allegations against Gaetz “merit continued review” and it has “also identified additional allegations” that warrant investigating. But McCarthy has repeatedly denounced those accusations and has said Gaetz worked to oust him because of the ethics probe. In late 2020, under Trump-appointed Attorney General Bill Barr, the Justice Department opened an investigation into allegations Gaetz may have had sexual contact with a minor. A source familiar with the House panel’s work previously told CNN that the Justice Department’s decision not to bring charges against Gaetz does not impact what the committee will and won’t investigate.

The House Ethics Committee said Tuesday it has identified "additional allegations" against Rep. Matt Gaetz "that merit review," as it continues to investigate the Florida Republican over claims of what it called "sexual misconduct and illicit drug use." The Ethics Committee said it is now eyeing claims that Gaetz — who denies wrongdoing — "dispensed special privileges and favors to individuals with whom he had a personal relationship, and sought to obstruct government investigations of his conduct." The ethics panel also said it had difficulty in obtaining relevant information from Gaetz and others since the probe began in April 2021 amid a federal criminal sex trafficking investigation of Gaetz and a friend, Joel Greenberg. "During the course of its investigation, the Committee has also identified additional allegations that merit review," despite the difficulty of getting information from Gaetz, the Ethics Committee said. Gaetz's fate and the outcome of the ethics probe carry more weight now that Republicans have only a paper-thin majority in the House of Representatives.

Biden administration officials have said that they respect differences of opinions. Many officials told CNN they spoke with other officials who had resigned publicly to seek advice before going public with their own resignations.

Chubb CEO Evan Greenberg told CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday that climate change is one factor that's driving the price of insurance. "Climate change has created tremendous volatility, and it continues to evolve," Greenberg said. "And the concentrations of values in areas where, where the climate – the impact of the climate – is greatest continues to increase." Known for insuring businesses and wealthy individuals, Chubb is also a major insurer of agriculture, Greenberg said. "And so, therefore, reflecting loss cost, when you think general inflation, when you think climate change, when you think litigation, that is driving the pricing of insurance."
