CNN —India’s second nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine joined its naval fleet late last month, a move the government says strengthens its nuclear deterrent as New Delhi casts a wary eye at both China and Pakistan. The de facto border between India and China, known as the Line of Actual Control, has been a longtime flashpoint between the two. India’s next ballistic missile subs could be years away, however, if history is any predictor of the future. Arighaat was launched almost seven years ago, and if that timeline from launch to commissioning applies to the next Indian ballistic missile sub, it won’t join the service until 2030. The committee made the estimate after launching investigations into Shein and Temu more than a year ago. "If the de minimis exemption is removed, then the cost of products from marketplaces like Shein and Temu will rise. They will still be cheap marketplaces but they won't have quite the competitive edge on price that they do now," Saunders told CNBC in an email. On Friday morning, the Biden administration announced plans to bar overseas shipments of products that are subject to U.S.-China tariffs from being eligible for the de minimis exemption. Both Shein and Temu declined to tell CNBC if they will raise prices due the proposed changes.

Discount home goods retailer Big Lots filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday after high interest rates and a sluggish housing market slowed demand for its low-priced furniture and decor. As part of its Chapter 11 filing, Big Lots agreed to sell its business to private equity firm Nexus Capital Management for about $760 million, consisting of $2.5 million in cash plus its remaining debt and liabilities, court records show. While discount retailers tend to do well in rough economic cycles, Big Lots primarily caters to lower- and middle-income consumers, who have curbed discretionary spending at a higher rate than their more affluent counterparts. “Big Lots is not always good value for money. Dollar Tree also owns the long-struggling Family Dollar chain. While dollar stores once expanded to reach a growing number of financially strapped Americans, they underestimated just how financially strapped many Americans would become. “They missed the fact in tough times the consumer would be looking for consumables.”Meanwhile, Dollar Tree has been weighed down by its purchase of Family Dollar. Earlier this year, Dollar Tree announced that Family Dollar will close more than 900 stores, and it subsequently said it will explore a sale or spinoff of Family Dollar. In previous times of financial stress, Dollar General has seen middle-income and slightly more affluent households trade down into Dollar General to save money.

Overstock.com is back from the dead

New York CNN —Overstock.com, which was one of the biggest names in e-commerce, is being revived just a year after its new owners ditched the name in favor of Bed Bath & Beyond. The relaunched Overstock.com sells a lot of stuff similar to its previous incarnation, including indoor and outdoor furniture, home improvement tools and jewelry, but with a bigger emphasis on closeout and liquidation deals. Its sister site will still use the Bed Bath & Beyond name and continue to operate with a refined focus on home goods and as a destination for registries for weddings and other life events. In June 2023, Overstock.com changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond after Overstock’s parent company bought the bankrupt retailer’s brand’s name and domain in a failed effort to benefit from its name recognition. The changes didn’t catch on with shoppers, prompting major moves within the company’s management ranks.

New York CNN —Supreme, the trendy streetwear clothier adored by celebrities and cool kids alike, has been sold to an eyewear manufacturer for substantially less than it sold for just four years ago. Italian company EssilorLuxottica announced Wednesday that it’s buying Supreme for $1.5 billion in cash from VF Corp. (VFC), the parent company of Vans and Dickies, which bought the brand for $2.1 billion in 2020. Supreme “perfectly aligns with our innovation and development journey, offering us a direct connection to new audiences, languages and creativity,” EssilorLuxottica said in a statement. The company added that the brand will have its “own space” in its portfolio and marks its first-ever apparel brand acquisition. “Buying a streetwear brand at a time when that aesthetic has gone off the boil is risky, and it is not clear what EssilorLuxottica intends to do to revive Supreme’s fortunes,” Saunders said.

Jonathan Akeroyd is leaving Burberry with “immediate effect,” the company said in its earnings release Monday, and replacing him with Joshua Schulman, a luxury wear veteran that has held CEO roles at Coach and Michael Kors. A global slowdown on spending on luxury goods has also forced Burberry to issue a profit warning, and it scrapped its dividend. “There is a sense that Burberry has been on the back foot and that Jonathan Akeroyd’s revitalization plans have largely failed to stop the rot,” Saunders told CNN. “A course correction has been needed for some time and Burberry is hoping a new CEO can deliver this.”
