Citi has named Pegasystems one of its new top picks, citing an "underappreciated" artificial intelligence story and attractive valuation. The Wall Street bank has set a target price of $92 for Pegasystems, representing a potential 25% upside from its current trading price of around $73.50. Pegasystems, an enterprise software firm, has seen its stock price surge by over 50% year-to-date, outperforming the broader iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF , which is up nearly 14% this year. China's CSI 300 index has gained about 25% since the stimulus measures were announced. That would depend on whether the measures announced will likely target China's stock market or the real economy. Even if China's economy improves and its stock market soars, experts suggest it's unlikely to hurt the Indian equity market's growth outlook over the long term. For now, a strong and rapidly growing economy, as well as a "resilient" domestic investor base, continue to be significant drivers of Indian stock markets, according to Wall Street's observers. "The Indian market has numerous positive domestic drivers which underpin our overweight recommendation," Morgan Stanley's Jonathan Garner said in a note to clients this week.

In 2023, the fund returned 30.7%, significantly outperforming its benchmark and the S & P 500, which was up 26%. Yiu's decision stems from his belief that Microsoft's business model is about to change significantly in light of the rise of generative AI. Microsoft has been leading the charge in generative AI adoption. The crux of the issue lies in the increased costs associated with providing AI services, according to the outperforming fund manager. Nvidia's chips, while readily available, allows the Silicon Valley company to capture much of the profit from generative AI services instead.

This report is from this week's CNBC's "Inside India" newsletter which brings you timely, insightful news and market commentary on the emerging powerhouse and the big businesses behind its meteoric rise. Over the years, the services sector of the Indian economy has grown to account for 45% of total exports, up from 30% a decade ago. The Indian government, meanwhile, has been eager to support the manufacturing sector in creating mass employment, a key economic and political challenge that the services sector alone hasn't been able to address. These companies also boast moats that make them unique compared to the large BPO firms of the last three decades. Perhaps it could also address some of the risks to employment created in the BPO sector from artificial intelligence.

Its fund manager, Sean Peche, has a track record in picking winners that have helped the fund beat the S & P 500 over the past two years without owning any of the so-called " Magnificent Seven " technology stocks. The fund manager identified the U.S.-listed Perion Network as its worst-performing stock investment of the year. As an Israeli company not included in major stock indices, the Ranmore fund manager believed it might be undervalued due to reduced investor attention. The Ranmore fund manager noted that the company's cash reserves, which stood at $188 million at the end of 2023, provided some protection against further losses. Despite the setback with Perion Network, Peche remains optimistic about other investments.

Yet, India's central bank appeared to dismiss the negativity earlier this month and reiterated its bullish view of India's growth rate, still expecting the economy to grow by 7.2%. However, when prompted on whether India's growth rate could compete with what China has already achieved for over two decades, the governor was less buoyant. But if you are looking at 10-plus growth, before I venture into that, I have to really do my homework much more," Governor Das said. This week, China's central bank, President Xi Jinping and other top leaders announced plans to boost the country's economy and attract investment. If India intends to grow as fast as China did, it may have to get a move on.

The move prompted Wall Street giants Barclays and Citi to adopt a more optimistic stance on global cyclical stocks. Barclays believes the Federal Reserve's actions are "clearly designed to pull out all the stops to achieve a soft landing" for the economy. Barclays strategists noted that "cyclicals typically rebounded steadily after the Fed started its rate cut cycle ... as long as it was not followed by a recession." Citi strategists share a similar outlook for European stocks. "The scale of the downgrades has become so extreme of late that we're now approaching a point where negative ERI may be a useful contrarian indicator," the Citi strategists said.

Historically, a rate cut has been a signal for central banks in emerging markets, like India, to follow by easing monetary policy in their regions. The latest data shows that the inflation rate appears to be heading in the wrong direction in India. The headline inflation rate rose in August to 3.65% compared to 3.6% in the previous month. Instead, markets have simply hit snooze on a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of India for the moment. If there's no global recession, a risk-on sentiment will likely help push up emerging market equities in the medium term after the U.S. central bank cuts rates.

The Wall Street bank surveyed its fundamental equity team of 130 analysts, covering approximately 3,400 companies, to identify the companies that stand to gain from AI across various sectors. The bank believes the development of AI is the third major tech cycle over the past five decades. The earlier cycles are the growth of the internet and mobile phone devices. Amid a recent downturn in semiconductor stocks, Jefferies has identified three "top picks" in the sector, which it says present investors with a buying opportunity. The investment bank identified Dutch semiconductor toolmaker ASML and European suppliers to the chip making industry ASM and VAT as its top picks. Jefferies expects "most semiconductor companies, including foundries, chip vendors, and front-end equipment suppliers, to beat and raise in coming quarters." As Japanese stocks plummet, confirming a bear market, there are opportunities in small-cap and domestic-focused companies, according to fund manager Richard Kaye. 'Yen is just getting normal' Kaye believes the Yen's appreciation is a return to normalcy rather than an anomaly.
