A state appeals court in New York on Thursday suspended Kenneth Chesebro, who struck a plea deal with prosecutors pursuing the 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump, from practicing law there. An attorney for Chesebro did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday evening. Some legal groups filed ethics complaints against Chesebro with the New York Supreme Court’s attorney grievance committee in 2022. Chesebro was admitted to practice law in New York in 2007. Jenna Ellis, another Trump attorney, was banned in May from practicing law in Colorado for three years.

Atlanta rap star Young Thug agreed to change his plea to guilty Thursday in Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, a stunning turn that, if approved by the judge, would bring his high-profile case to a close. The agreement comes after three of Young Thug's co-defendants took plea deals this week following mounting speculation that Whitaker could order a mistrial. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis used Georgia's Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations, or RICO, statute to claim Young Thug and his associates are a street gang with ties to the national Bloods gang. Whitaker this week approved plea deals for three of them: Quamarvious Nichols, 29; Marquavius Huey, 28; and Rodalius Ryan, 18. Young Thug first gained mainstream success with his 2014 drug anthem "Stoner."

An Alabama man was sentenced Tuesday to one year and nine months in prison for threatening a sheriff and a district attorney in Georgia over the jail mug shot of former President Donald Trump, prosecutors said. Hanson also threatened District Attorney Fani Willis, saying that if Trump was indicted, "anytime you’re alone, be looking over your shoulder." Hanson made the threats in two voicemails left for Labat and Willis on Aug. 6, 2023, before Trump was indicted or his mug shot was taken. A Fulton County grand jury indicted Trump and 18 other people last year on state charges related to efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in Georgia, an election that Trump lost. Trump was indicted on Aug. 14, 2023, and 10 days later, he surrendered to the Fulton County Jail and his mug shot was released publicly.

A co-defendant in the racketeering and gun conspiracy case against Atlanta rapper Young Thug accepted a plea deal Tuesday after days of speculation over whether Georgia's longest-running criminal trial may end in a mistrial. Young Thug and the others have been jailed since 2022 on charges of conspiracy and criminal street gang activity and additional firearm- and drug-related charges. The indictment accuses Young Thug, 32, of leading a street gang, Young Slime Life, or YSL, with members committing illegal and violent acts, including murder, armed robbery, drug dealing and carjacking. Opening statements finally began last November after several defendants had already taken plea deals while others chose to be tried separately from Young Thug. The defendants have denied they are part of a street gang and critics contend the RICO law is being unfairly used against Black hip-hop artists.

Fulton County prosecutors asked a Georgia appeals court this week to restore six charges against former President Donald Trump that were tossed in his indictment over attempts to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. In a court filing, prosecutors from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' office requested that the state's Court of Appeals reinstate six counts, including three against Trump, that she said Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee wrongly discarded earlier this year. "The trial court erred by quashing six counts of the indictment in this case, each of which alleged the crime of Solicitation of Violation of Oath by Public Officer," they wrote. The three solicitation counts against Trump included accusations that he solicited Georgia House Speaker David Ralston and twice solicited Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. A Georgia judge on Tuesday blocked a new rule from the state's election board that would have required counties to count ballots cast on Election Day by hand, a provision critics had said would cause delays and disruptions in reporting results in the battleground state. He has repeatedly praised the three board members who passed the measure, saying they’re “pit bulls fighting for honesty, transparency and victory.”The three members are Janice Johnston, Rick Jeffares and Janelle King. CNN —A judge in Georgia has struck down a slate of controversial new election rules passed by Donald Trump allies, including two that Democrats say would inject post-election “chaos” into the critical battleground state. Three GOP members of the Georgia State Election Board were thrust into the spotlight after Trump mentioned them by name at a rally in Atlanta this summer. Among the other rules Cox invalidated is one that would have required officials to hand-count the number of ballots cast at each polling place, saying Georgia law didn’t support the requirement. A different judge in the state paused the ballot hand counting rule on Tuesday in a separate challenge brought against it by Cobb County. “The rule vastly expands the authority and obligations of poll officials in preparing ballots pre-delivery to the superintendents and pre-certification,” Cox wrote Wednesday.

CNN —Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has asked the state’s Court of Appeals to reinstate six counts in the election subversion case against Donald Trump and his co-defendants, including three specifically against the former president. The court filing brings the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, and the effort to overturn Trump’s election defeat, back into the spotlight as early voting begins in Georgia in the 2024 election. The counts relate to Trump and his co-defendants’ alleged efforts to have state officials appoint a fake slate of electors for the state following his loss in the 2020 election. In his March decision, McAfee wrote that Willis failed to give the defendants “enough information” to prepare their defenses. “As written, these six counts contain all the essential elements of the crimes but fail to allege sufficient detail regarding the nature of their commission, i.e., the underlying felony solicited,” McAfee wrote at the time.

County election boards in Georgia are not allowed to refuse to certify election results, a state judge ruled on Tuesday. “If election superintendents were, as Plaintiff urges, free to play investigator, prosecutor, jury, and judge and so -- because of a unilateral determination of error or fraud -- refuse to certify election results, Georgia voters would be silenced. McBurney said the law was clear when it says that county officials "shall" certify the results. She is one of a growing number of Georgia officials who have refused to certify election results since 2020, worrying election experts that county officials might try and block the routine certification of election results in the name of baseless conspiracy theories. CNN —A record number of early votes have been cast in Georgia on Tuesday as residents headed to the polls in a critical battleground state that is grappling with the fallout from Hurricane Helene and controversial election administration changes that have spurred a flurry of lawsuits. CNN —A judge in Georgia has paused a new rule from the Georgia State Election Board that would have required officials to hand-count the number of ballots cast at each polling place, criticizing state election officials for approving it so close to Election Day. The hand-count rule is the subject of litigation on multiple fronts and a separate hearing on the matter is set for Wednesday. Passed by the Donald Trump-backed Republican majority on the state election board, the rule would require officials at a polling place to match the number of ballots tallied by voting machines with a hand-count of the number of ballots cast. Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, a Republican, has noted the state took several steps to speed up the reporting of results in Georgia this year. He has said the hand-count rule could delay the reporting of results, foster an atmosphere for misinformation and present chain of custody issues for ballots.

The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday reinstated the state’s six-week abortion ban while it reviews an appeal from the state of a lower court ruling that had struck down the law. The state Supreme Court's decision, however, left in place the lower court’s ruling blocking a separate provision of the law that had given state prosecutors broad access to the medical records of abortion patients without due process protections. The state's near-total abortion ban, known as the LIFE Act, was signed by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp in 2019 but didn’t take effect until July 2022, after it faced a legal challenge and the U.S. Supreme Court’s reversal of Roe v. Wade.
