India’s gamified equities are a wake-up call

The result is an acceleration of Indian savings away from gold and real estate into financial products. However, it is also leading to what Ashish Gupta, chief investment officer at Axis Bank’s mutual fund, dubs “the gamification of Indian equities”. A frenzy for index options has driven up volume in the derivatives market to the tune of $4.3 trillion a day. Retail traders made up a higher share of equity derivatives turnover than their institutional counterparts on the National Stock Exchange between 2017 and 2021. Whatever the fix, it’s a reminder that India’s digital leapfrog which other developing countries are urgently trying to replicate has a dark side too.

REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas Acquire Licensing RightsNEW DELHI, Nov 4 (Reuters) - India's air safety watchdog proposes reduced night work hours and more rest for pilots, among measures to address rising complaints of pilot fatigue, according to draft regulations seen by Reuters on Saturday. The proposal from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation come more than two months after it decided to conduct a review of pilot fatigue data collected during spot checks and surveillance of airlines. The review was launched after an IndiGo (INGL.NS) pilot collapsed and died in August before his flight. Changes would include cutting the maximum flight duty period to 10 hours from 13 hours for pilots operating at night, and increasing the minimum weekly rest period to 48 hours from 36 hours. IndiGo, India's biggest airline, has said the pilot who died had a 27-hour break before duty and was in good health.

REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas/File photo Acquire Licensing RightsMUMBAI, Oct 25 (Reuters) - The Indian rupee rose marginally on Wednesday, helped by retreating oil prices and U.S Treasury yields, while the dollar/rupee cash swap rate indicated that dollar liquidity was less than sufficient. The rupee was at 83.1500 to the U.S. dollar at 11:53 a.m. IST, up from its previous close of 83.1925 but slightly below its open at 83.0650. Meanwhile, USD/INR swap rate for today over tomorrow was at 0.15 paisa following the expiry of the Reserve Bank of India's $5 billion swap on Monday. Non-deliverable forwards (NDFs) indicate the rupee will open at around 83.16-83.18 to the U.S. dollar, compared with 83.1225 in the previous session. The rupee on Friday managed a small relief rally on aggressive intervention by the RBI in NDFs and spot. Its looks like the intervention "will not prove too sticky" and the rupee "will be back under pressure", a forex trader at a bank said. The RBI's swap maturity has promoted concerns about a dollar crunch and the central bank, like last week, may once again be a provider of dollars, according to traders.

While bad loans in India's banking sector are at a decade-low, estimated at 3.6% of assets by March 2024 by the central bank, Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das said this month the central bank was monitoring some categories of personal loans, without elaborating. What's worrying the regulator is a surge in tiny personal loans, particularly loans of up to 10,000 rupees ($120) taken for three to four months, often for "lifestyle" spending, according to a person familiar with the central bank's thinking. Four people discussed the central bank's concerns with Reuters but declined to be identified as they are not authorised to speak to the media. Ismail Sayyed, a 30-year old cab driver from Mumbai, took his first personal loan of 5,000 rupees this year. Central bank officials "have been ringing the bell", said an official at a large bank that has seen sharp growth in personal loans.

"We're currently testing the ability for Pages to create broadcast channels and expect to roll this out in the coming weeks," Meta said in a statement. The central bank has initiated enquiries into these cases, according to the first and third sources. In other cases under investigation, AIFs have been used to evade caps on foreign investment in certain sectors, the first and third sources said. India awaits top court verdict on same-sex marriages
  + stars: | 2023-10-16 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
REUTERS/Francis Mascarenhas/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNEW DELHI, Oct 16 (Reuters) - India's top court will deliver a verdict on Tuesday on granting legal recognition to same-sex marriages, a ruling that has the potential to spark momentous changes in the world's most populous country. The case is seen as a milestone event for LGBTQ rights in India, following a historic 2018 judgement by the Supreme Court that scrapped a colonial-era ban on gay sex. A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by the Chief Justice of India heard arguments in the case between April and May and reserved its order on May 11. The Supreme Court website showed late on Monday that the verdict is due to be pronounced on Tuesday. Members of India's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community (LGBTQ) say they face discrimination despite the 2018 judgement, and that the absence of legal backing for same-sex marriages violates their constitutional rights.

"Most traffic issues occur because of non-line-of-sight scenarios," the government panel said in its 58-page draft, which is being reported for the first time by Reuters. "Most sensors do not work well in these scenarios and V2X fills the gap," it added, referring to the connected car technology commonly known as vehicle-to-everything (V2X). In Europe, the Euro NCAP rules recognise vehicle connectivity as a key milestone in crash avoidance and car ratings, the report added, while China and the United States are among the nations evaluating similar rules to improve safety. "With limitation for growth infrastructure there is a strong need to depend on technology to address challenges," the panel said in its report. Reuters —The death toll from flash floods unleashed by a glacial lake bursting its banks in India’s Himalayas climbed to 74 on Monday with 101 people still missing days after the calamity struck, according to provincial officials. An analysis of the images shows more than 60% of the water held in the lake drained out after the extreme rainstorm triggered a glacial lake outburst. This phenomenon happens when a glacial lake rises too high or the surrounding land or ice gives way and the lake bursts, sending water and debris rushing down mountains. The country's monetary policy committee (MPC) kept the repo rate (INREPO=ECI) unchanged at 6.50%, in a unanimous decision. It has raised rates by 250 basis points (bps) since May 2022 in a bid to cool surging prices. High inflation has put the focus back on liquidity management amid the reduced ability to keep hiking rates at the risk of hurting growth and commentary and further measures, if any, are being closely monitored by market participants.
