CNN —Up to 600 people were shot dead in a matter of hours by al Qaeda-linked militants in an August attack on a town in Burkina Faso, according to a French government security assessment that nearly doubles the death toll cited in earlier reports. A series of coups across Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger led to the departure of French and American forces. The Russian mercenaries summoned by the juntas to bolster their grip have instead left a vacuum in which jihadists have thrived, says the assessment, given to CNN by a French security official. In an undated photo provided by the Australian Federal Police, illicit drugs are found in a concealed compartment in a vehicle. Australian police technicians were able to modify software updates regularly pushed out by the administrator, McCartney said. A chance finding of bones in a cave is revealing clues of a much older tragic mystery. The once-in-a-lifetime find, nicknamed Thorin after a character in “The Hobbit,” has puzzled researchers for nearly a decade. Grotte Mandrin is the only known site to have been home to alternating groups of both Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis. “The Thorin population spent 50,000 years without exchanging genes with other Neanderthal populations,” Slimak said in a news release. DNA from Homo sapiens fossils from that time show that these early arrivals interbred with Neanderthals — traces of those encounters remain in present-day human populations. Archaeologists have excavated more of Thorin’s remains: 31 teeth, part of the jaw and five finger bones, so far. It’s the only known site to have been home to alternating groups of both Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, plus the earliest evidence of bow and arrow use outside Africa.

Paris CNN —French anti-terror authorities are investigating a suspected arson attack on a synagogue Saturday morning that injured a police officer, the latest in a series of attacks in recent months that have unsettled France’s Jews. The incident took place in La Grande-Motte, a southern seaside town not far from Montpellier. Observant Jews typically go to synagogue on Saturday morning to celebrate the Sabbath. French anti-terrorism prosecutors confirmed in an email to CNN that they had taken charge of the investigation. Outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said on X that a municipal police officer had been hurt in the incident.

Almost seven weeks since those elections ended in deadlock, with neither left, right nor center winning a majority, France remains intractably stuck.

Hip-hop legend Tupac Shakur’s “California Love” blasted on loudspeakers on the tarmac at Los Angeles International Airport as the plane came to a stop.
