Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman plans to retire by May 2024, leaving big shoes to fill. AdvertisementAdvertisementSuccession has traditionally been a bloody sport on Wall Street with the losers leaving and taking their lieutenants with them. Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman, who plans to retire by May 2024, wants the buck the trend so the bank can hold onto all three candidates. "Wall Street has had a history of that not happening," said Gorman in a July earnings call. With Morgan Stanley at the top of its game, breaking up this well-oiled team could be disastrous.

Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman plans to retire by May 2024. "Cross-pollinating key leaders across our major businesses further knits the Morgan Stanley culture," Gorman wrote in a memo at the time. Morgan Stanley, which was the lead underwriter, had to step in to prop up the stock. In 2010, Morgan Stanley was picked as one of two lead underwriters — the other being JPMorgan — for the IPO of General Motors. With Morgan Stanley at the top of its game, breaking up this well-oiled team could be disastrous.

Goldman Sachs partners are leaving — some 202 during David Solomon's five years as CEO by Insider's calculation. In particular, before Solomon, Goldman nurtured many fiefs and then spread the wealth from the most successful ones across the firm. Of the former Goldman executives that Insider interviewed, here are the most cited reasons they gave for leaving Goldman. When both men struggled, senior partners left, and Goldman stumbled in its efforts to wind down its balance-sheet investments. Goldman Sachs partners are paid well by any standard: $950,000 in base salary and often multiples of that in annual bonuses.

Russell Horwitz has been named David Solomon's new chief of staff at a difficult time for the CEO. Russell Horwitz, a partner and former chief of staff to CEO Lloyd Blankfein, is returning to the firm after roughly two years away. Another, Jake Siewert, left Goldman for Warburg Pincus in June 2021. Horwitz left soon after. He has Washington experienceLike Rogers, Horwitz also has a past working in Washington DC.

John Rogers, who joined Goldman in 1994 and served as chief of staff to four of the bank's CEOs, is giving up that role next month, Solomon said in the employee memo. For decades, Rogers, 67, wielded outsized influence at Goldman, an institution sometimes called "Government Sachs" because former executives have gone on to presidential administration roles. While Rogers is ceding his chief of staff responsibilities to Russell Horwitz, a former deputy of his who was most recently global affairs chief of Citadel, he is retaining other roles. As incoming chief of staff, Horwitz, who spent 16 years at Goldman before departing in 2020, will oversee corporate communications and government and regulatory affairs. "Please join me in thanking John for his long and impactful tenure as chief of staff, as well as his continued commitment to Goldman Sachs in his other firmwide responsibilities, and in welcoming Russell back to Goldman Sachs," Solomon said.

Over 50 cryptocurrencies worth over $100 billion in total and making up about 10% of the overall market, are now viewed by the SEC watchdog as securities, according to CCData. Among major players, for example, solana , polygon and cardano have sunk between 23% and 32%. Bitcoin and ether weren't named in the SEC's lawsuit, nor were stablecoins such as tether and USC Coin. By contrast, bitcoin investors who have held their coins for more than five months appeared relatively calm and accounted for just 1.9% of deposit volume. Investment products tracking altcoins have seen positive - albeit small - net inflows this year, in contrast to bitcoin and ether, Coinshares data showed on Monday.

We are witnessing the dawn of a new kind of urban area: the Playground City. The transformation toward the Playground City will not happen on its own. To draw people into the Playground City, we need to show, not tell. 6.Engage citizensGovernments should empower citizens to participate directly in making the Playground City. The Playground City sees people as both a means and an end, and it should involve them in the process of its creation.
Monday's drop came after Binance tweeted Sunday that the Bitcoin network was "experiencing a congestion issue" and that it was temporarily closing bitcoin withdrawals as a result until the network stabilized. Some market participants have argued that the Bitcoin network is stable and Binance should have prepared for a high-fee environment on Bitcoin. Our team has also been working on enabling BTC Lightning Network withdrawals, which will help in such situations." "There is an increasing demand for BRC-20 tokens which include transferring digital collectibles on Bitcoin network," said Oppenheimer analyst Owen Lau. On May 1, about 50% of bitcoin transactions were BRC-20 mints, Thorn highlighted in a note Friday.
Cryptocurrencies took a dip on Monday to start the week and new month as investors bet the takeover of First Republic Bank could put an end to the financial crisis, which has been the biggest driver of this year's bitcoin rally. Bitcoin fell about 4.2% to 28,137.76 to start the week and new month, according to Coin Metrics. Last week, the price of bitcoin rallied in the final week of April as troubles at the bank unfolded. "It's unclear whether the banking crisis narrative can continue to be a boon for bitcoin," said Alex Thorn, head of firmwide research at Galaxy. "Bitcoin and ether started 2023 inorganically cheap, allowing for plenty of room to move higher off a low-base effect," Thorn said.

The break became more noticeable in March, as investors rediscovered bitcoin's appeal as alternative banking system as the regional banking crisis unfolded. Bitcoin's correlation with the S & P 500 is now at its lowest since September 2021, after reaching its highest ever in 2022 , according to Coin Metrics. Meanwhile, bitcoin's correlation with gold, a traditionally "risk-off" asset, has risen. This break in correlation is perhaps a sign more investors are waking up to this fact." Bitcoin became more of an institutional asset at the start of 2021 as big investors, short term traders and macro funds jumped into the market.
In 2023, working for a company that offers a few days of paid time off isn't going to cut it. The best employers out there will instead focus on pushing "proactive rest," HR experts say. "It's still a valuable tool, but proactive rest is more than that." After all, U.S. companies are notorious for offering paltry paid time off to workers, and even employees who have it are terrible at actually taking their days. Some companies are playful in how they roll out proactive rest.
"An uptick in bitcoin volatility would, rather than trigger concern, be greeted as a positive sign and would most likely be closely followed by a similar move in spot and derivative trading volumes." Sigel also pointed to bitcoin miners who may be selling covered calls in order to monetize profits as much as they can. Bitcoin miners have had a difficult time with the bitcoin price stuck at such low levels. "Each time volatility has been this low, historically, bitcoin prices have bottomed," said Alex Thorn, head of firmwide research at Galaxy Digital. Thorn said that while seeing lenders and exchanges collapse feels unstable, the crypto market will emerge from this period having significantly matured.
With so much Wall Street pay linked to bonuses, the law has less bite for financial-services firms. A new salary-transparency law is about to take effect in New York City, the nation's financial capital. Will law firms take advantage of the ambiguities of the law?" Less visible, though just as much the lifeblood of the firm, are Merrill's client associates. But we're not treated that way, and we're not stupid," an associate who recently left the firm said. "Our client associates are essential to the fabric of the firm, how we serve clients and grow," a company representative said. Yagyaev said client associates were "grossly underpaid" across the industry and their base should really be in the area of $80,000 to $90,000. An advisor who recently left Merrill and worked with CAs said some were leaving for raises of about $30,000 to work at other banks.
JPMorgan is preparing for a quantum futureDavid Castillo, Andrew J. Lang, and Marco Pistoia. The difference could allow users of the tech to process algorithms and execute calculations at blistering speeds. That's because quantum computing uses quantum mechanics, a kind of physics that leverages quantum bits, or qubits, instead of ones and zeros used by classic computers. But JPMorgan researchers say there are signs the industry is getting close to the point where quantum computers can process real-world problems faster than classic computers, often referred to as quantum advantage. The platform, run by Castillo, is also hardware-agnostic, meaning it can interface with quantum computers from different providers without needing to rewrite the application code.
