It was meant to be another night of violence at the hands of the far right. “It shows that when everyone comes out to support, their numbers dwindle.”Large crowds gathered at an anti-racism protest in Walthamstow on Wednesday, where far-right violence had been expected. The fury simmering in a subset of White Britain remains a live danger; these riots were shocking, but not entirely surprising. “I normally walk through this city center all the time,” Nadeem Akhtar, 18, told CNN in the northern English city of Sheffield, where angry riots took place. Tommy Robinson, the figurehead of Britain’s far right, was reinstated to X (then Twitter) days after Elon Musk bought the platform.

"A lot of these individuals had been deplatformed, so they wouldn't have had an opportunity to amplify," Van der Linden said. Musk has also claimed that the UK police's response "does seem onesided" — a viewpoint commonly promoted by far-right activists. Van der Linden said Musk might be being radicalized by his own platform. Musk's echo chamber on X is increasingly conspiratorial, Van der Linden added. Representatives for X did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.

Ninzr said he had lived in the Rotherham hotel since he arrived, but was at another processing center when the riot broke out. Several passers-by referenced unfounded rumors that hotel residents have abused local women. CNN asked South Yorkshire police if they have received complaints about the behavior of the hotel residents, but have not yet received a response. With more demonstrations planned for this week, do the residents near the Rotherham hotel fear more violence? “After seeing our community come out today, no,” said the man who lived through the London riots.

London CNN —Far-right riots swept Britain over the weekend, with outbreaks of anti-immigrant violence in a number of cities and towns, leaving the new UK government scrambling to control the worst disorder in more than a decade. Throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday, violent protesters congregated in city and town centers across the UK, many of them apparently intent on clashing with police and causing havoc. The gatherings ostensibly started as anti-immigration marches, organized on social media platforms like X and on WhatsApp and Telegram groups. Violence also took place in Sunderland, Middlesbrough, Stoke-on-Trent and several more cities, mostly across the Midlands and north of England. The man in charge of bringing those offenders to justice was Keir Starmer, then Britain’s Director of Public Prosecutions.

A small fire in a wheelie bin was also visible while windows in the hotel were smashed. Police in the north of England town of Rotherham struggled to hold back a mob of far-right rioters who were seeking to break into a hotel housing asylum-seekers. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has condemned the attack on a hotel housing asylum seekers, describing it as "far-right thuggery" as violence broke out in several towns and cities across the country. Elsewhere, bricks were thrown at police officers in Stoke-on-Trent in central England while scuffles have also been reported in Belfast, Manchester and Nottingham. James Speakman / PA via APThe violence erupted earlier this week, ostensibly in protest of Monday’s stabbing attack in Southport. False rumors spread online that the young man was a Muslim and an immigrant, fueling anger among far-right supporters. “During the course of the evening, our officers were met with serious and sustained levels of violence,” he said. Far-right demonstrators chanted anti-migrant, anti-Muslim slogans at the London rally that turned violent on Wednesday. He added that, while the algorithm played a part, there was also a “huge amount of organizing happening” in a variety of different places that are not algorithmically oriented – for example in far-right groups on the instant-messaging platform Telegram. Like what was being shared on X and other platforms, the Telegram group “Southport Wake Up,” also posted false information about the alleged suspect. Hours after the attack, the group’s creator sent out the details for the first protest: Meet near a Southport mosque on Tuesday. The “Southport Wake Up” group is still active, and on Thursday, posted calls for similar disruptions at Muslim centers in other cities across England.

Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky became the first foreign leader to attend Britain’s cabinet meeting in person since former U.S. president Bill Clinton in 1997, in a public display of Britain’s staunch support for Ukraine as doubts grow about future U.S. military aid if Donald J. Trump wins a second presidential term. Mr. Zelensky briefed the British government’s top ministers on Friday on his country’s military conflict with Russia, while discussing moves to prevent oil tankers from breaching international sanctions against Moscow. The Ukrainian president, who was greeted with a standing ovation, was the first foreign leader to be invited into Downing Street by Keir Starmer, the new British prime minister, following his general election victory earlier this month. The two leaders also discussed a new defense export support treaty designed to boost production of military hardware and weaponry in both countries. Mr. Zelensky’s visit to Downing Street followed his attendance on Thursday at a summit of more than 45 European leaders at Blenheim Palace, near Oxford, where Ukraine was high on the agenda, and where he won renewed pledges of support for his battle against the forces of Russia’s president, Vladimir V. Putin.

"We cannot let the challenges of the recent past define our relationships of the future," Starmer said in a Wednesday statement from Downing Street. It comes as the specter of a second presidency from Republican candidate Donald Trump looms heavy over Europe after an assassination attempt over the weekend buoyed support for the former president. Both Trump and his newly announced running mate JD Vance have indicated that continued support for Europe — and in particular Ukraine — are not guaranteed under a second Trump administration. The Republican presidential nominee has repeatedly lambasted the continent's lack of defense spending, and has threatened to pull out of NATO, while Vance has shown ambivalence over U.S. intervention in foreign affairs. In anticipation, European NATO members have been upping their defense spending, including a new commitment from Starmer to spend 2.5% of U.K. gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.

The speech sets out the agenda of Keir Starmer, who defeated Rishi Sunak's Conservatives in this month's election. Starmer also formalized plans to renationalize Britain’s rail network in the coming years, and to create a publicly-owned renewable energy company. At home, a number of institutions were targeted for modernization – most awkwardly, the very room in which Charles gave his speech. “The party opposite has successfully tapped into the public’s desire for change, but they must now deliver change,” Sunak said. Those arguments will intensify in the coming weeks, as Labour introduces its first bills to Parliament – beginning with three priority measures from the speech later this week.

CNN —Poland is considering a Ukrainian proposal to intercept Russian rockets that are on course to hit cities in Ukraine or enter Polish territory, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski said following a speech at the American Enterprise Institute on the sidelines of the NATO summit on Friday. “We are a frontline state and Russian missiles breach our airspace – we assume by mistake,” Sikorski said. Sikorski explained that some missiles fired from around St. Petersburg fly along the Polish border through Belarusian airspace, before briefly entering Polish airspace for about 40 seconds before hitting targets inside Ukraine. Sikorski said the idea of Poland downing Russian missiles was discussed in that agreement. “If NATO does not make such a decision, Poland will not make it individually,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

It was a carefully staged display of big-power theatrics — or more precisely, of middle-power-meets-big-power theatrics. “You are now connected to Air Force One,” said a White House operator, as Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain hunched over a speakerphone, in a short video released on Saturday by 10 Downing Street. Prime Minister, congratulations,” said President Biden, who was flying to Wisconsin for a campaign rally. “What a hell of a victory!”The two leaders spoke warmly about the importance of the “special relationship” between Britain and the United States, their shared commitment to defending Ukraine and an upcoming rendezvous: Mr. Starmer is leaving on Tuesday for Washington, where Mr. Biden is hosting a NATO summit.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivers his speech outside Downing Street 10, following the results of the election, in London, Britain, July 5, 2024. Britain's new Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Saturday he would scrap a controversial plan to fly thousands of asylum seekers from Britain to Rwanda in his first major policy announcement since winning a landslide election victory. But no one was sent to Rwanda under the plan because of years of legal challenges. At his first press conference since becoming prime minister, Starmer said that the Rwanda policy would be scrapped because only about 1% of asylum seekers would have been removed and it would have failed to act as a deterrent. "The Rwanda scheme was dead and buried before it started.

CNN —Keir Starmer’s historic victory in Britain’s general election Thursday hands him a level of power that was unthinkable for a Labour leader just five years ago. Convincing the public that the Labour Party could be trusted with public finances was a big part of his electoral campaign. Most notably, the hard-right Reform UK, led by friend of Donald Trump Nigel Farage, secured 14% of the national vote. It’s extremely likely that with Starmer now in power, Farage and his acolytes will turn their attention to tearing chunks out of the Labour Party. Fortunately for Starmer, he has quite a lot of political capital to spend.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer of Britain will barely get his feet under the desk in 10 Downing Street before he flies to Washington this coming week to attend a NATO summit. A week after that, he will play host to 50 European leaders at a security meeting at Blenheim Palace, the birthplace of Winston Churchill. It’s a crash course in global statecraft for Mr. Starmer, Britain’s first Labour prime minister in 14 years. But it will also give him the chance to project an image of Britain that is uncharacteristic in the post-Brexit era: a stable, conventional, center-left country amid a churning tide of politically unsettled allies. In Washington, Mr. Starmer will encounter President Biden, who is resisting calls to abandon his race for re-election because of age-related decline.

London CNN —The Labour Party has won a landslide victory in the UK general election, sweeping into power after 14 years of Conservative rule on the back of a wave of public disillusionment. Addressing the nation from outside 10 Downing Street for the first time as prime minister, Starmer had one overarching message: Change starts now. There were high-profile casualties, with the short-lived former Prime Minister Liz Truss and several cabinet ministers being booted out by voters. Conservative leader and, as of Friday morning, former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak took responsibility for the electoral wipeout, apologizing to voters in his farewell address. Leaving the palace as the newly minted prime minister, he then headed straight to Downing Street.

In the United States, a new president usually has a two-month window to prepare to move into the White House. Freshly elected British prime ministers move into Downing Street swiftly, often within hours of elections. Keir Starmer, whose Labour Party won a commanding majority in the House of Commons, was formally appointed prime minister on Friday by King Charles III. Just hours after his predecessor, Rishi Sunak, made his exit, the new prime minister is about to make a speech to supporters outside the front door of 10 Downing Street. Since the last general election five years ago, three prime ministers have lived there, including Liz Truss, who called Downing Street home for less than seven weeks.

In his first speech to the nation as prime minister, Keir Starmer said that Britain had “voted decisively for change, for national renewal,” and promised to lead a pragmatic government that would restore hope and the nation’s faith in politics and public service. 10 Downing Street under cloudy afternoon skies, Mr. Starmer began by praising his predecessor, Rishi Sunak, who had given his own brief farewell remarks from the same spot a couple of hours earlier, before turning to his own ambitions. “We need to move forward together,” Mr. Starmer said. “Have no doubt that the work of change begins immediately,” he said. The Labour Party leader’s car arrived in Downing Street from Buckingham Palace, where moments earlier King Charles III had invited him to form a government.

Rishi Sunak addressed the nation for the last time on Friday as Britain’s prime minister, apologizing for his failings and accepting responsibility for his Conservative Party’s catastrophic election performance but defending his economic record. “To the country, I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry,” said Mr. Sunak in a brief but dignified statement in Downing Street. And I take responsibility for this loss.”The outgoing leader spoke for about four minutes, with his wife, Akshata Murty, looking on. Mr. Sunak said he would step aside as leader of his party — but only once formal arrangements to choose his successor are in place.
