  + stars: | 2023-05-17 | by ( Sarah Grossbart | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +13 min
Father’s Day is June 19 and you’re still empty-handed, and unless you’re 8 years old, it’s no longer cute or acceptable to turn up with a handmade coupon book. For the golfing dadIf your dad is an avid golfer, an upgrade to his typical apparel is a solid gift choice. For the dad who loves long walksIf dad’s shoe collection is looking a little tired, consider a pair of Birkenstocks. And just in time for the big day, you can get a digital gift card delivered right to his inbox. For the dad who’s the life of the partyThe “king of all coolers” is how Los Angeles-based stylist Alison Deyette describes Yeti’s UV-resistant Roadie 24 Hard Cooler, which makes the polyethylene beverage tote a shoo-in for the best last-minute Father’s Day gift.

Staples is “a classic ‘category killer,’ like Toys R Us,” Mitt Romney, then Bain & Co.’s managing general partner, said in 1989. Another category killer fell this week, when Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy. Once the go-to stop for everything in customers’ homes, Bed Bath & Beyond was brought down by shopping changes, competition and its own missteps. Founded in 1971 as Bed ‘n Bath as a small linen and bath store, the company changed its name to Bed Bath & Beyond in 1987 to reflect its expanded merchandise selection and built larger superstores. It’s somewhat ironic that there is now nostalgia for Bed Bath & Beyond and other once dominant chains that drove mom-and-pops out of business.
Dick’s Sporting Goods stopped selling semi-automatic, assault-style rifles at stores and Citigroup put new restrictions on gun sales by business customers after the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, in 2018. But Yale professor Jeffrey Sonnenfeld, a vocal advocate of corporate social responsibility who has a direct line to major CEOs around the globe, said that top executives are forlorn. Before the Bell: CEOs have been quiet about gun reform since the latest mass school shooting in Nashville, have you heard anything about plans to speak out? Enough already on saying ‘what are the CEOs doing?’ Social capital is as valuable as financial capital. But don’t these CEOs hold the purse strings in terms of donating to powerful politicians?
Their efforts to curb gun violence have run into fierce pushback from Republican lawmakers that oppose both gun restrictions and corporations taking on social roles. Gun safety advocates say businesses have a civic responsibility to keep their customers and employees safe from gun violence. “Whether you’re a business that works directly with gun manufacturers, sells guns or are a grocery store, gun violence comes to your front door,” he said. “I’m not arguing they need to solve the social issue of gun violence,” Volksy said. “I am arguing they have a business incentive to solve for the cost of gun violence.”
A Dick’s Sporting Goods store stands in Staten Island on March 09, 2022 in New York City. Dick's Sporting Goods on Tuesday reported holiday quarter results that beat Wall Street's expectations, citing a sales boost from the gift-giving season even with inflation-weary consumers. Same-store sales increased 5.3% during the fourth quarter, more than double analysts' estimates of 2.1%, according to StreetAccount. Analysts polled by Refinitiv had expected fiscal 2023 EPS of $12. But the company feels confident it has resolved its supply chain dilemma as it heads into the 2023 fiscal year.

The unflinching resilience of the US labor market is one of — if not the — greatest source of tension in today’s economy. That means the Fed’s already painful rate hikes are likely to continue until the job market simmers. In just one year, the Federal Reserve has raised interest rates from nearly zero to a range of 4.5% to 4.75% to cool the economy. The labor market is stronger than ever: The US added a shocking 517,000 jobs in January and knocked unemployment down to its lowest level since 1969. If the labor market remains strong, more Fed-induced pain lies ahead.

Hoka, which started in 2009 in France as a running shoe for hardcore marathoners, is growing rapidly with casual runners, hikers and weightlifters. “There wasn’t anyone doing what Hoka was doing.”But Hoka carved out a niche in specialty running shops. By 2019, Hoka sales topped $220 million. “We don’t see this as just a running brand,” Deckers CEO David Powers said in October. “This is a running, trail, hike brand that is more like a North Face” than Brooks running shoes.
Some Retailers Are Learning to Love Bulked-Up Inventories

Discount retailers Burlington Stores Inc. and TJX Cos. are among those happy to stock up as other merchants look to off-load goods. “Last year, our store inventories were just too lean going into the spring,” Mr. O’Sullivan said on a Nov. 22 call with analysts. The overall retail sector’s ratio of inventories to sales, a measure of how much companies have in stock compared with what they sell, remains tight by historical standards. The ratio for inventories to sales at those stores was 1.54 in September, up sharply from 1.39 in September 2019, according to Census Bureau figures. The company reported inventories rose 44% in the latest quarter compared with the same period a year earlier.

Many stores that were once open on Thanksgiving have changed policy since the pandemic, shuttering for the day before Black Friday sales. Here are the businesses and institutions that will be open and closed on Turkey Day. We’ll again be closed on Thanksgiving,” Walmart (WMT) US CEO John Furner said in an October interview on NBC. Costco (COST), Home Depot (HD), Nordstrom (JWN), Publix, Sam’s Club, Trader Joe’s and others have been closed on Thanksgiving for many years. As for retail pharmacies on Thanksgiving Day, CVS, Walgreens and Rite Aid will be open with varying hours.

Best Buy, Dick’s Ease Fears About Holiday Spending
  + stars: | 2022-11-22 | by ( Dean Seal | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
Best Buy Co. and Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. reported mixed quarterly results but said sales wouldn’t fall as much as previously expected, signs that consumers are feeling the pinch of high inflation but still buying some electronics and sporting goods. Best Buy said profits fell and comparable sales dropped 10.4% in its third quarter, but the results weren’t as bad as investors had feared. The company slightly raised its sales target for the fiscal year that ends in January, saying comparable sales would decline 10% instead of 11%.

Oil stocks have been huge winners this year, thanks to the spike in crude prices…which boosted sales and profits. For now, at least, energy investors are reaping the rewards. And there are also opportunities for investors looking for a little more risk…and potential reward. Finally, investors who’ve bet against the stock market also can give thanks for this year’s volatility. PC giants Dell (DELL) and HP (HPQ) also report results this week.

Peloton is cutting another 500 jobs in a move that CEO Barry McCarthy said should position the struggling fitness equipment maker to return to growth. The cuts, which amount to about 12% of Peloton’s workforce, mark a pivot point for the company, McCarthy told CNBC Thursday. McCarthy has overseen drastic changes to Peloton’s business model this year as the company struggled with sales after a boom during the earlier days of the Covid pandemic. McCarthy talked to CNBC after The Wall Street Journal reported on remarks he made about where the company could stand in six months. “I’m feeling about as optimistic as I’ve ever felt,” he said, reflecting on the changes the company made over the past several months.
Peloton races tough economic cycle
  + stars: | 2022-10-06 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
TORONTO, Oct 6 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Peloton Interactive (PTON.O) is pedaling as fast as it can. The maker of connected bikes plans to cut 500 more jobs, or about 12% of its workforce, according to the Wall Street Journal. And even though McCarthy has steadily trimmed the cash burn, free cash flow was a hefty negative $412 million in the three months to June 30. Peloton, whose market value has plummeted 90% in a year, is coming precariously close to the end of a wild ride. The Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade creates new challenges for employers and health insurers covering abortion services, especially whether and how to pay for travel to states where the procedure remains available. Companies including Starbucks Corp., Uber Technologies Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. have said they would reimburse travel for medical services including abortion. Just Eat Takeaway.com N.V.’s Grubhub and Dick’s Sporting Goods said they would provide up to $4,000 to cover expenses traveling for services not available in their home state.
