CNN —Israel’s war conduct in Gaza “is consistent with the characteristics of genocide,” including mass civilian casualties and using starvation as a weapon, according to a new United Nations Special Committee report released Thursday. A woman in Kentucky who is seeking an abortion filed a lawsuit Tuesday that seeks to strike down the state’s near total ban. The suit, filed by a woman referred to in the documents as Mary Poe, alleges that two Kentucky abortion laws violate the state Constitution’s rights to privacy and self-determination. “I feel overwhelmed and frustrated that I cannot access abortion care here in my own state, and I have started the difficult process of arranging to get care in another state where it’s legal. Poe’s lawsuit is also requesting class-action status for all pregnant people in Kentucky who are seeking access to abortion in the state but are not allowed to receive the medical treatment because of the abortion laws. In 2022, the ACLU was involved in a lawsuit brought by abortion providers on behalf of their patients.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday dealt a setback to former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in his defense against 2020 election interference charges in Georgia, turning away his attempt to transfer his case from state to federal court. His lawyers argued that the case should be moved because he was acting as a “federal officer” at the time and could therefore argue for immunity from prosecution. Circuit Court of Appeals concluding that because Meadows is no longer a federal official, the provision that would allow the case to be moved to federal court does not apply to him. The appeals court also found that even if he was deemed to be a federal officer, "the events giving rise to this criminal action were not related to Meadows' official duties." A judge on Friday paused proceedings in the criminal election interference case against President-elect Donald Trump, a move that reflects the expected end of the prosecution.
