CNN —President-elect Donald Trump has selected Russell Vought as his pick to lead the Office of Management and Budget, he said in a Truth Social post. Vought was one of the key authors of Project 2025 – the conservative blueprint that Trump tried to distance himself from during the campaign. He was Trump’s former budget director during his first administration when Vought oversaw a widespread deregulation push. During Trump’s first administration, Vought made a name for himself as a policy wonk committed to the MAGA movement. Before serving as Trump’s budget director, Vought was the deputy director and later acting director of OMB.

Be honest: Would you say work is what you do, or who you are? Now think about the aspects of your pre-retirement self you'd like to carry over into your retirement life in some way. If you can do that honestly, you're more likely to find a satisfying retirement on the other side. CNN —President-elect Donald Trump named billionaire Scott Bessent as his pick to serve as the next secretary of the Department of the Treasury. A key Cabinet player, the US Treasury secretary advises the president on economic and fiscal matters, including spending and taxes. Bessent would be the first out gay Treasury secretary, as well as the first LGBTQ Senate-confirmed Cabinet member in a Republican administration, according to The Associated Press. Compared to Lutnick’s more aggressive campaign for the role, Bessent led a more understated quest for the position. All of the names Trump put out Friday night had been decided by the afternoon, the sources said, but he wanted to name his Treasury secretary first before publicly releasing his other decisions.

High-Yield Savings Accounts Are Still a Good Deal
  + stars: | 2024-11-22 | by ( Ann Carrns | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
You’ve probably been discouraged to see the interest rate on your high-yield savings account fall during the past couple of months. But your money is still earning much more than it would in a traditional savings account — and more than inflation. Rates paid on cash in savings accounts have been dropping since the Federal Reserve began cutting its key interest rate in September as inflation cooled. Even so, the rates paid on federally insured high-yield savings accounts, many offered by banks that operate solely or mostly online, are still beating inflation, which was 2.6 percent on an annual basis in October. “High-yield savings accounts are still attractive relative to traditional savings accounts,” particularly for emergency or “rainy day” funds that savers want to be able to tap into quickly, said Alan Bazaar, chief executive and co-chief investment officer at Hollow Brook Wealth Management in Katonah, N.Y.

The words “private equity” are almost poetic in their power to obfuscate in such a way that most people simply tune out when they hear them. But there’s a reason workers tend to have a negative association with private equity. Per Bloomberg, Apollo “built its name as the scrappiest private equity and distressed-debt investor on Wall Street by buying businesses and loading them up with debt that offered creditors meager protections in the face of default.”Historically, private equity deals were largely handled by big banks. Private equity firms now hold controlling stakes across an array of industries, including supermarkets, housing, health care, fashion, restaurants and vet clinics. And other efforts to force more transparency and accountability in private equity have similarly faced opposition.

US satellite TV provider DirecTV has terminated its agreement to acquire Echostar’s satellite television business, which includes rival Dish TV. The deal would have created one of the largest pay TV distributors in the United States, with a combined 20 million subscribers. As part of the transaction, DirecTV was to pay $1 to buy the pay TV business called Dish DBS, including Dish and Sling TV, with the assumption of about $9.75 billion of Dish’s debt. The proposed deal, initially announced in September, was seen as a strategic consolidation in a shrinking pay TV market. DirecTV and Dish have held on-and-off talks over the years.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump is expected to offer Kelly Loeffler the job of secretary of the Department of Agriculture, two people familiar with the matter told CNN. He is set to meet with her at Mar-a-Lago Friday afternoon, but as is always the case, nothing is final until Trump announces it. The agriculture job will likely be a significant one — especially as Trump’s pick to run the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has promised to assert his influence over the agriculture industry. Loeffler, appointed to the Senate by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp over the wishes of Trump, lost her seat in a 2021 runoff to Democratic now-Sen. Raphael Warnock.

Reuters —The Nicaraguan parliament, dominated by the ruling Sandinista Front, on Friday approved a constitutional reform that hands more power to President Daniel Ortega as well as the Central American nation’s police and military. The two have been married since 2005 and she was made vice president in 2017. Under the new reform, the co-presidents will have control over the legislature, judiciary and electoral, public administration, and oversight bodies as well as autonomous entities. Government critics have said the reforms legalize the “absolute power” already exercised for years by Ortega and Murillo. “If adopted, these changes will sound the death knell for fundamental freedoms and rule of law in Nicaragua,” he said in a statement.

Some major tech companies including Meta are taking steps to combat “pig butchering” scams, which trick Americans out of billions of dollars each year through fake online friendships and romances. Pig butchering scams are elaborate and often take months to unfold. Meta on Thursday announced it has taken its first major steps into addressing the scams, including dedicating staff to identify where scammers operate, sharing that information with international law enforcement, and taking down more than 2 million accounts this year. The announcement reflects how more tech companies are recognizing the severity of pig butchering scams. Calling themselves the Tech Against Scams coalition, the companies pledged to share scammer information with each other and better educate users.

Former billionaire investor Sung Kook “Bill” Hwang was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Wednesday over the collapse of Archegos Capital Management, which cost Wall Street banks more than $10 billion. Hwang was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan, where a jury convicted Hwang in July on 10 criminal charges including wire fraud, securities fraud and market manipulation. Before sentencing Hwang, Hellerstein asked the defendant’s lawyer, Dani James, how she thought Hwang compared to Sam Bankman-Fried, who was sentenced in March to 25 years in prison for stealing $8 billion from users of the now-bankrupt FTX exchange. While Archegos eventually managed $36 billion, Hwang’s borrowing helped him amass $160 billion of exposure to stocks. Hwang’s co-defendant, former Archegos Chief Financial Officer Patrick Halligan, was convicted at the same trial on three criminal charges.
