Of course, these basic rules of political decorum are ones Donald Trump has rarely followed. He’s been accumulating political capital, and his victory only gives him an opening to accumulate more ... if he chooses to. On some level, I accept the notion that one person’s revenge is another person’s “reform,” so I’m sure Trump could argue he’s appointing reformists. What will ultimately matter is whether these folks can govern like reformers or end up simply as conduits for Trump’s revenge. CNN —Record-breaking ocean temperatures, fueled by planet-warming pollution, have turbocharged dozens of Atlantic hurricanes over the last few years, making them more potent and dangerous by increasing their wind speeds. Every hurricane in the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was made stronger than it otherwise would have been without human-caused climate change, according to analysis from nonprofit climate research group Climate Central. Wind speeds of the 11 hurricanes were increased by 9 to 28 mph by water that was up to 2.5 degrees Fahrenheit warmer because of climate change. Nine of this season’s 11 hurricanes rapidly intensified and climbed up the hurricane category scale due to climate change-driven ocean heat. Climate Central researchers also found that human-caused climate change made exceptionally warm ocean temperatures that fueled Milton’s explosion 400 to 800 times more likely.

Declaring a species “endangered” is the most severe level of threat under the law, indicating the species is at immediate risk of extinction. The US has become a significant market for giraffe parts and products, importing nearly 40,000 for at least a decade-long period, a 2018 report showed.

Indians have become the biggest group of international students in the U.S., surpassing Chinese students this year for the first time in 15 years. New data released by the State Department in conjunction with the Institute of International Education shows that there are now 331,602 Indian international students in the U.S. (a 23% growth from last academic year), compared with 277,398 Chinese international students (a 4.2% decline). South Korea, Canada and Taiwan follow distantly as the next most common countries of origin for international students, with numbers all well under 50,000. CNN —China rejected a meeting with Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin during a conference in southeast Asia this week, marking the latest turn in a tumultuous relationship between the two countries’ defense leaders. But China did not accept the offer, pointing to a recent Taiwan arms sale as their rationale, a senior defense official told reporters traveling with Austin in Laos. The Chinese rejection of the meeting in Laos comes just days after US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Peru for their final meeting under Biden’s administration. China has often used the cancellation of meetings and lines of communication as a way of registering displeasure with the United States. After then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in 2022, China cut off a number of lines of communication with the US, including on military issues and climate.

Reporters had opportunities to ask Biden questions at the G20 summit in Rome in 2021, in Bali in 2022, and in Vietnam in 2023, following the summit’s conclusion in India the prior day.

Police in Australia charged former radio show host Alan Jones with 24 assault and sexual touching offences on Monday, indictments that followed accusations in a newspaper that Jones had assaulted young men for decades. Police allege the offences took place between 2001 and 2019 against 8 victims, some of whom Jones knew professionally or personally. He denied the assault allegations made against him last year by the Sydney Morning Herald newspaper. Jones had hosted radio shows for decades and anchored the popular Sydney breakfast show on radio station 2GB for about 18 years until 2020. After leaving 2GB, he worked at a digital start-up, but had been off the air since the Sydney Morning Herald allegations were made.
