Coinbase Global's latest earnings were even weaker than expected, but with an eye toward next week's election and its effect on cryptocurrency markets, many analysts on Wall Street say the exchange is still a buy. Coinbase also warned that an October drop in the price of ether could offset growth in nontrading revenue in the current quarter. Coinbase tumbled as much as 8.6% in early trading Thursday, touching a low of $193.56. The election outcome at one point was widely viewed as a key catalyst for the price of bitcoin. Because, look: In terms of negotiating your salary, the right time is yesterday. Asking for a raise is one of the single most important things a woman can do to increase her total earning power over the course of her career. There are many things to negotiate for that can have value for you, and your employer, as you develop your career. These things may be of more tangible value to you tomorrow than a salary bump is to you today, because they can increase your earning power in the long run. If I hit these metrics, what kind of career progression and raise should I expect to see?"

While the cumulative effect of inflation has had a pronounced influence on the U.S. economy, the view in relative terms is getting progressively better. Judging by the personal consumption expenditures price index, inflation was expected to run at just a 0.2% rate in September and 2.1% from a year ago, according to Dow Jones estimates. "Another strong quarter of GDP growth and close-to-target quarterly inflation reading will be welcomed by the Fed stuck between balancing the risks of inflation and the labor market," Citigroup economist Alice Zheng said in a note Wednesday. Within the GDP report, the PCE rate for the quarter was just 1.5%, suggesting that the battle has been won. While the market is still betting heavily on more rate cuts this year, the Fed likely will be cautious.

'A rising tide lifts all boats,' comp expert saysThe ultimate size of Boeing's capital raise puts it in league with some of the largest raises ever, according to global equity capital raise data provided by LSEG. The Commerce Department is expected to report Wednesday that gross domestic product grew at a hardy 3.1% annualized pace in the third quarter, adjusted for seasonality and inflation, according to the Dow Jones consensus forecast. Along with that, the release is expected to show that inflation moved closer or perhaps even below the Federal Reserve's 2% target. The Fed uses the personal consumption expenditures price index, included in the GDP estimate, as its primary inflation gauge. The report, then, should indicate a solid economy and easing inflation , the latter at least on a relative basis from how things looked a year ago. "Overall, another quarter of above-trend growth and a benign inflation reading will be welcomed by the Fed."

It’s a crucial trend that undercuts one of the biggest arguments Republicans have used to hammer Democrats over the cost of living. Although gas prices are down and the rate of inflation has cooled sharply, consumers are still hurting from years of price hikes. After Russia invaded Ukraine, oil prices skyrocketed due to fears of massive supply disruptions. Drivers rolling up to gas stations in some battleground states are enjoying significant price drops, including Nevada (79 cents cheaper than a year ago), Arizona (78 cents cheaper), Pennsylvania (36 cents cheaper) and Wisconsin (32 cents cheaper). But for now the markets appear to be bracing for muted prices, a situation that should keep a lid on gas prices.

China's steel exports will soon hit an eight-year high, before sweeping tariffs sink in and drag down the industry in 2025, industry watchers said. As the biggest exporter of steel, China accounts for about 55% of the world's steel production. Strategists at Macquarie Capital predicted that China's steel exports will reach 109 million tons this year, before declining to 96 million tons in 2025. Trade tariffs could further curb China's steel exports, "albeit this may require a while to play out," analysts from the the investment bank told CNBC. After hitting a record high of 112 million tons in 2015, the country's steel exports had been on a multi-year slide before it started improving in 2020.

Bond market investors are having trouble figuring out an economy that looks good from 30,000 feet, but less so closer to the ground. Whether it's payrolls, gross domestic product or retail sales, or a host of other measures, growth looks solid, at the very least. On Wall Street, the general view was of concern: The Beige Book "showed no material improvement in a generally bleak outlook," Citigroup economist Andrew Hollenhorst wrote. However, if growth deteriorates, as the Beige Book indicates it has, that likely would push the Fed towards more reductions. "Despite recent stronger-than-expected data on U.S. employment, retail sales, and consumer inflation, the Fed's latest Beige Book signals a still weakening economy."

Bank stocks have outperformed in recent weeks as investors see an improved regulatory environment if former President Donald Trump returns to the White House, according to Bank of America. The Invesco KBW Bank ETF (KBWB) , which tracks the KBW Bank Index, has climbed more than 6% since the start of October. By comparison, the S & P 500 has added less than 2% during the same period. American consumers and businesses are having a hard time paying off credit card, auto, and commercial real estate debt. Bank CEOs said on recent earnings calls that elevated prices and interest rates continue to weigh on Americans. According to Federal Reserve data, the past-due debt share for credit card, auto, and commercial real estate has recently risen to above pre-pandemic levels. That's because some loans are coming due — forcing businesses to refinance at much higher interest rates. The financial roller coaster of pandemic payments, whipsawing inflation, and high interest rates are especially affecting lower-income Americans.
