But strategy advisors say it'll need to get more serious about defining its public benefit. Unlike traditional for-profit businesses, which are primarily focused on maximizing shareholder value, public benefit corporations must balance stakeholder interests with those of their employees and customers. Investors can also question why a company isn't progressing on its stated public benefit. It will also need to define its "public benefit" as part of its new corporate charter, he added. So as OpenAI restructures, the pressure is now on the company to clearly articulate its public mission and show that it's serious about it.

Brisbane, Australia CNN —A pilot who died when he crashed a helicopter into a hotel in Australia had “significant blood alcohol content” during the unauthorized flight, according to an official report into the incident. The pilot had been out with friends at various venues around Cairns and was seen consuming alcohol, according to witnesses and security camera footage, the report said. Cameras also caught the moment he positioned one of Nautilus Aviation’s Robinson R44 Raven II helicopters onto a helipad at Cairns Airport at around 1:30 a.m. local time. The report found they wouldn’t have seen a helicopter that was operating at night with no lights. It found the helicopter wasn’t upright when it hit the hotel, but there was also no sign of mechanical failure.

But there's another clear aim for DirecTV: getting more leverage over content providers. AdvertisementLike all pay-TV providers, DirecTV has been crushed by cord-cutting for the last decade or more. Though the S & P 500 is up more than 20% in 2024, Evercore ISI sees a patch of volatility ahead as the November presidential election approaches — and the firm has stocks to play either outcome. Evercore ISI thinks that automotive components manufacturer Aptiv could rise in the event of a Harris/Walz win. Evercore ISI called the bank "a flight to quality name," saying it was in a competitive position despite an uncertain backdrop. If Trump wins, Charter Communications is one stock that could benefit from a "potentially benign tax environment" and a pickup in M & A activity, Evercore ISI said. Supermarket operator Kroger could also outperform due to its ability to pass through higher prices to consumers, according to Evercore ISI.

Dish's "Seinfeld" strategy appears to have ended quite like the actual show — with its finale a generally-accepted disappointment. In 2011, Dish cofounder Charlie Ergen first mentioned "Seinfeld" on an earnings call, responding to an analyst's question about his company's mixed bag of assets. When Dish and DirecTV discussed merging in 2014, DirecTV's market capitalization was about $40 billion, and Dish's market valuation was more than $28 billion. DirecTV sold a year later to AT&T for $49 billion in equity value. EchoStar was motivated to move Dish and its debt off its balance as a $2 billion debt payment matures in November, CNBC reported last week.

Why Damian Lewis is herding sheep in London

Hollywood actor Damian Lewis abandoned his ewe-sual starry pursuits this weekend to drive a group of sheep over a bridge in London. Lewis’ temporary role of shepherd was part of a tradition dating back hundreds of years. The City of London – London’s traditional financial hub – is known as the Square Mile, although it actually covers 1.12 square miles. In a statement from the organizers prior to the event, Lewis expressed his excitement about leading the sheep drive. “As a proud London Welshman, playing the drover and driving my sheep, as if from Llandeilo, across The Thames, will be a career highlight.

Tom Carpenter“I saw an uptick in people traveling with their pets early in 2024,” said Heather Eisenstadt, founder of Top Dog Pet Travel, a central Florida agency specializing in pet-friendly bookings. While analysts don’t track pet travel outlays specifically, some airlines and hotels appear eager to welcome more furry guests — aware that many visitors will pay a premium for it. Some pet owners say they wouldn’t make use of it anyway. Hosts on both platforms set their own pet fees. But the 41-year-old warehouse supervisor from Allentown, Pennsylvania, sees hotel pet fees of up to $200 as reasonable.

No ballot will have a gun-related initiative led by voters this fall. Among the four proposed reforms, voters in Washington state wanted to ban assault weapon sales, while voters in California proposed requiring trigger locks on firearms and annual gun license renewals. Heyne said it is a sign that state and federal legislators are enacting gun laws, meaning voters no longer have to take matters into their own hands. In a landslide, voters in California greenlit proposals that strengthened gun laws. In May, the state passed a law preventing local governments from enforcing red-flag laws.

The committee includes five members: New York City's top attorney, the comptroller, the City Council speaker, the borough president serving the longest consecutive term, and a deputy mayor that the mayor selects, the city charter states. U.S. President Joe Biden addresses the 78th Session of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City, U.S., September 19, 2023. But given the geopolitical backdrop for Biden's speech, there will be little time for victory laps. Since Biden's last UNGA address in September 2023, ongoing wars in Ukraine and Sudan have persisted, while long-simmering tensions in the Middle East have erupted into deadly conflicts. Still, the Biden administration regularly emphasizes its commitment to a ceasefire and hostage deal. "This is one of the advantages of the UN General Assembly: You literally have the whole world here," said the administration official, who was granted anonymity to preview the president's agenda.

Discovery to form sports streaming service Venu, which promised to offer access to tons of live sports at less than half the cost of traditional cable bundles. Unlike ESPN+, this service will have all of ESPN's content, including Monday Night Football games and shows like "First Take." Disney is doing everything it can to make sure it's not in the same boat — hence its investments in projects like Venu and ESPN Flagship.
