Marianne Williamson's latest campaign manager just parted ways with the long-shot Democratic candidate. It comes less than a month after her previous campaign manager resigned. POLITICO reported on Tuesday that Roza Calderon, who first joined Williamson's campaign as a fundraiser in April, has parted ways with the long-shot Democratic candidate and self-help guru's campaign. It was not clear whether Calderon was fired or resigned, and a spokesperson for Williamson's campaign did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment on the matter. Peter Daou, Williamson's previous campaign manager, announced his own resignation on Twitter in late May.

REUTERS/Toby MelvilleBRUSSELS, June 12 (Reuters) - EU countries on Monday tweaked draft rules aimed at giving workers at online companies such as Uber (UBER.N) and Deliveroo (ROO.L) employee benefits, ahead of negotiations with EU lawmakers who want more comprehensive rules than both EU governments and the European Commission. In their draft version agreed on Monday, EU countries propose that companies will be considered employers if they meet three out of seven criteria. The EU executive said the rules would cover some 4.1 million of the 28 million workers at online platform companies across the 27-country European Union. Uber criticised the proposals from both EU countries and lawmakers. EU countries, EU lawmakers and the Commission will now thrash out the details before the draft becomes legislation.

One of the janitors said she faced "extreme hardship" like rationing pills after losing healthcare benefits. Former janitors at Twitter's New York office say they're owed "hundreds of thousands of dollars in back wages" in a lawsuit filed Tuesday. The three adults onboard, including the pilot and the children’s mother, Magdalena Mucutuy, died in the crash. Calderon dismisses the idea that his job is particularly high risk, but he concedes flying in the Colombian Amazon is not for the faint hearted. Soldiers stand next to the wreckage of a plane during the search for child survivors on May 19, 2023. Moreover, this type of older airplanes are often the most apt to operate in the limited infrastructure of the airfields in the Colombian Amazon. This year the Colombian government budgeted the equivalent of over $200 million to boost airports across the Amazon region over the next 30 years, and to open eight new commercial flight routes Amazon region.

SAN JOSE, April 19 (Reuters) - Costa Rica's president on Wednesday presented a set of security measures in response to surging crime rates in the Central American country, which is currently on track this year to beat 2022's record murder rate. Costa Rica ended 2022 with a record 12.6 homicides per 100,000 residents, according to the judicial research agency OIJ. The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled legislation promoted by President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador mandating that the Army assume control of the National Guard was unconstitutional. Two of four justices nominated by the president voted against his plan. Eight of 11 justices voted it down in total. Lopez Obrador, who has suffered a number of setbacks at the hands of the court, will leave office at the end of September 2024 following general elections in June 2024. The next Congress will begin on Sept. 1, 2024, the day Lopez Obrador said he would present his initiative to reform the constitution to enshrine military control of the National Guard.

The South Africa-headquartered AngloGold and Gold Fields are among the five biggest gold producing companies by output in the world, with operations in Africa, Australia and South America. Gold Fields' Preece, who last month said the company was no longer pursuing big M&A deals after its failed bid for Canada's Yamana Gold (YRI.TO) said on the conference call "collaboration is easier". Judge Brian Cogan instructs the jury ahead of deliberations in the trial of Genaro García Luna earlier this month. Mexico’s former top law-enforcement officer was found guilty in a federal court Tuesday of helping the powerful Sinaloa drug cartel smuggle cocaine into the U.S.A jury in Brooklyn convicted Genaro García Luna of all five counts he faced, including engaging in a criminal enterprise and conspiring to distribute drugs. Mr. García Luna headed Mexico’s federal investigation agency and served as the country’s minister for public security from 2006 to 2012 under then-president Felipe Calderón.
The jury found Garcia Luna guilty on all five counts he faced, which included continuing criminal enterprise and conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Garcia Luna is one of the highest-ranking Mexican officials ever accused of ties to drug trafficking. Garcia Luna, who moved to the United States after leaving office and was arrested in 2019, had pleaded not guilty. Cesar de Castro, a defense lawyer, portrayed Garcia Luna as a hardworking family man and said his accusers had "incredible motives to lie." Guzman was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 following his conviction in Brooklyn on drug trafficking and murder conspiracy charges.
REUTERS/Jane RosenbergNEW YORK, Feb 15 (Reuters) - A former Mexican law enforcement official once in charge of the country's battle against drug trafficking helped the Sinaloa cartel build a "global cocaine empire" in exchange for millions of dollars in bribes, a U.S. prosecutor said on Wednesday. "These leaders paid the defendant bribes for protection - and they got what they paid for," Komatireddy said, referring to Guzman and two other top-ranking Sinaloa cartel figures. Garcia Luna, she said, "used his official government position to make millions of dollars for himself from the people he was supposed to prosecute." Garcia Luna, one of the highest-ranking Mexican officials ever accused of helping drug cartels, led Mexico's Federal Investigation Agency from 2001 to 2005 and was public security minister from 2006 to 2012. Guzman was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 following his conviction in Brooklyn on drug trafficking and murder conspiracy charges.
Mexico’s former top law-enforcement official is set to go on trial Monday in a Brooklyn federal court, accused of helping one of the world’s most powerful drug cartels smuggle over 50 tons of cocaine into the U.S. in exchange for tens of millions of dollars in bribes. Genaro García Luna , 54, headed Mexico’s federal investigation agency and served as the country’s minister for public security from 2006 to 2012 under then-president Felipe Calderón .
Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn say Garcia Luna gave the Sinaloa Cartel sensitive information about its rivals as well as safe passage for drug shipments. Garcia Luna has previously accused drug traffickers of leveling false allegations against him as revenge for the actions he took against cartels. Guzman was sentenced to life in prison in 2019 following his conviction in Brooklyn on drug trafficking and murder conspiracy charges. Mexico's government in 2020 issued an arrest warrant of its own for Garcia Luna on charges of illegal enrichment. Mexico also sued Garcia Luna in Florida, where he had been living before his 2019 arrest, in an effort to recover what it called illegally obtained assets.
[1/2] Peru's interim President Dina Boluarte, who was called on by Congress to take the office after the legislature approved the removal of President Pedro Castillo in an impeachment trial, waves after being sworn-in, in Lima, Peru December 7, 2022. REUTERS/Sebastian CastanedaLIMA, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Dina Boluarte became Peru's first female president on Wednesday amid a political maelstrom when her predecessor and former boss Pedro Castillo was ousted in an impeachment trial and detained by police after he tried to illegally shut down Congress. But she shot to prominence alongside Castillo as the vice president on his ticket when the pair pulled off a shock election victory in 2021 for the far-left Peru Libre party. Once in office, Castillo tapped Boluarte as his development and social inclusion minister, a role she managed to keep until recently amid several cabinet shakeups. In recent weeks, Boluarte also distanced herself from Castillo, resigning from her role as a Cabinet minister after he replaced his prime minister in what some saw as an escalation in his showdown with Congress.
Reyes said Hollywood films often reflected the politics of their time — and that had an influence on Latino roles. Studies by the Government Accountability Office, the University of Southern California and other groups consistently show that Latinos are underrepresented in the film industry. Just this year, UCLA’s Hollywood Diversity Report documented “enormous gains” by women and people of color, but Latino representation still lagged. Slowly but surely, we are shaking up the narrative in Hollywood.”Calderón is frustrated by the continuing practice of “brownface,” whereby Latino roles go to white actors. Sanchez cited Eugenio Derbez in “Coda” (2021) as an example of a well-written Latino film character.
