Global PMIs are due later in the day, although those figures should not "change the dial too much," said Tony Sycamore, market analyst at IG. Recent comments from Fed officials, including Chair Jerome Powell, have indicated the central bank may take a slower course in its rate cut path. Among Trump policies on weighing on investors' minds were the president-elect's campaign pledges of tariffs, with Europe and China both likely in the firing line. The euro , which makes up a hefty portion of the dollar index, steadied at $1.0475 after falling to a 13-month low of $1.0461 on Thursday. The dollar was last down 0.17% on the day at 154.27 yen.

Mike Shatzkin, a charismatic publishing consultant who counseled industry figures on nearly every facet of the trade, from inventory management to supply-chain quandaries to the seismic paper-to-digital transformation of book selling, died on Nov. 7 in Manhattan. His death, at a hospital, was caused by complications of a rare and untreatable form of lymphoma, said his wife, Martha Moran. As the founder of the Idea Logical Company, he mentored publishing executives, served as a go-to expert for reporters and was a popular speaker at conferences. His blog, The Shatzkin Files, was an essential read for industry insiders — if they could keep up with his output. (“I type 100 words a minute,” he once boasted.)

Now we see it's very common for these store cards to charge over 30%." Just before the Fed began its rate-cutting cycle in September, many retailers and their bank partners raised interest rates on their store cards to protect their profits when the federal funds rate — which determines their own interest rates — came down. Now, the average interest rate on a store card is at an all-time high just ahead of the holiday shopping season, which is when most consumers sign up for store cards. That was less than half of the interest rate increase for store cards seen from September 2023 to September 2024, when the federal funds rate didn't budge. When asked why they increased the APR on their store cards, the companies that returned CNBC's request for comment pointed vaguely to industry standards and the current economic environment.

President-elect Donald Trump is considering naming Kevin Warsh as Treasury secretary then ultimately sending him off to serve as Federal Reserve chair, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The speculation comes with Treasury being the last major Cabinet position for which Trump has yet to state his intention. Among the potential scenarios would be one where Bessent would lead the National Economic Council initially then go over to Treasury after Warsh takes over at the Fed. However, Trump is known for the propensity to change his mind, and the report noted that nothing has been finalized. Read the full Wall Street Journal story here.

CNN —A decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials was met with anger and annoyance at Jerusalem’s bustling Mahane Yehuda Market. Gil Siegal, a legal scholar at the Ono Academic College in Israel, said The Hague-based court’s decision has united Israelis. Most Israelis still support the war in Gaza, he said, seeing it as a just fight and the only means to keep their country safe. The ICC “is saying that Gallant and Netanyahu are equal to Mohammed Deif… this is something that Israelis truly cannot comprehend, truly, truly cannot comprehend,” Siegal said. “Israel’s war machine does not only destroy Gaza but also hurts Israelis – in body and in spirit,” he told CNN.

In some exceptional circumstances, the debt brake can be suspended — this happened for example during the Covid-19 pandemic. watch nowWhen the debt brake was first implemented, its advocates argued that it would ensure a sustainable, responsible approach to public finances and spending. The yearslong effort to vanquish Donald Trump in court was a dismal failure. To oppose Mr. Trump in his second term, liberals must learn the lesson of this defeat, which is that there is no alternative to persuading our fellow citizens of our beliefs. Fifty years ago, Richard Nixon’s four Supreme Court appointments — Mr. Trump got only three — shoved the court right and consigned liberals to damage control. In this election, legalistic tactics contributed to Mr. Trump’s victory, helping to produce the popular majority he had never boasted before. For all of Mr. Trump’s misdeeds, prosecuting them was not worth the cost of restoring him to power.

Or, more specifically, test them out on aging ovaries, whether in well-controlled human studies, in the ovaries of mice, or in donor tissue samples. It shows that ovarian aging is a great proxy for overall human aging at a molecular level — ovarian aging is just happening several decades earlier, and very rapidly. So more and more people are paying attention to this concept of ovarian aging and considering it as a true aging process."
