All three major averages advanced for the week, powered by strong mega-cap earnings and favorable inflation data. Looking to next week, earnings season enters its second half with the last of our mega-caps — Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN) — set to report on Thursday. We'll get a better read on the employment picture on Wednesday with the ADP report and then, more importantly, on Friday's nonfarm payrolls report for July. Thursday after the close brings us to the main events of the week: Earnings from Apple and Amazon. For those looking to review first quarter performance ahead of these releases, be sure to keep our first-quarter earnings report card handy.

It's a sophisticated trading strategy that's becoming more accessible to retail investors. The strategy: Zero days-to-expiration options — which is essentially a one-day bet on the direction of the markets. Zero days-to-expiration options are contracts that expire the same day they're traded. Tilly believes these options are appealing to investors by allowing them to invest at the shortest duration of time left in a contract. "At the end of the trading day, the next result of that trade is settled in cash — not physically delivered like a stock or an ETF," he said.

July 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has accepted applications to create spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds from six firms including BlackRock (BLK.N) for review, the first step in the agency's process for deciding whether or not to approve the latest round of proposals. The SEC also formally acknowledged applications from Bitwise, VanEck, WisdomTree (WT.N), Fidelity and Invesco (IVZ.N) for similar spot bitcoin ETFs, with those proposals appearing on the Federal Register Tuesday and Wednesday. The SEC has previously rejected dozens of spot bitcoin ETF applications, saying the proposals did not meet anti-fraud and investor protection standards. The first bitcoin futures ETF was approved in October 2021, helping send the volatile bitcoin to an all-time high of $69,000 in November 2021. Spot ETFs directly track the price of the cryptocurrency, while futures-based ETFs follow the price of bitcoin futures contracts.

WASHINGTON, July 13 (Reuters) - Partnering with Coinbase Global (COIN.O) may hinder rather than help Nasdaq's (NDAQ.O) bid to win regulatory approval for a bitcoin exchange-traded-fund it wants to launch with BlackRock (BLK.N). The SEC has denied previous spot bitcoin ETF proposals on the basis that they would be vulnerable to manipulation. The SEC last month sued Coinbase, escalating SEC chair Gary Gensler's crackdown on the crypto industry. And with roughly 56% of U.S. dollar bitcoin trading, according to Nasdaq's filing, Coinbase is integral to the U.S. bitcoin market. All told, the SEC has 240 days after it accepts the bitcoin ETF filing applications to make a decision.

NEW YORK, July 11 (Reuters) - Exchange operator Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z) on Tuesday filed amended applications to list and trade shares of three spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds, including one by Fidelity, to add surveillance-sharing agreements with crypto-trading platform Coinbase (COIN.O). Shares of Coinbase closed up 9.8% at $89.15 on Tuesday and hit their highest level since Aug. 16 of last year. To meet the standards, an exchange could show it "has a comprehensive surveillance-sharing agreement with a regulated market of significant size related to the underlying or reference bitcoin assets," the SEC said. Nasdaq (NDAQ.O) on June 29 refiled an application with the SEC to list a spot bitcoin ETF by BlackRock (BLK.N), the world's largest asset manager, which also included a surveillance-sharing agreement with Coinbase. Cboe had earlier said it expected to reach such an agreement with Coinbase, which attracted roughly half of U.S. dollar-bitcoin trading in May on its platform.

The price of bitcoin fell on Friday following a report that recent bitcoin filings from big names like BlackRock and Fidelity have been deemed inadequate in the eyes of the SEC. Bitcoin lost more than 1% and was last trading at $30,191.00, according to Coin Metrics. The move came after the Wall Street Journal reported Friday that the Securities and Exchange Commission told Nasdaq and Cboe Global Markets, both of which filed bitcoin ETF applications on behalf of various institutions this month, that the filings aren't sufficiently clear or comprehensive. Specifically, the SEC said it returned the filings because they didn't name the spot bitcoin exchange that the Nasdaq and Cboe would have a "surveillance-sharing agreement" with or provide enough detail about the arrangement, according to the report. A Cboe spokesperson told CNBC that the exchange plans to update and resubmit its filings.

SEC spells out bitcoin ETF concerns to asset managers

The SEC has communicated its concerns to the exchanges Nasdaq (NDAQ.O) and Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z) which filed the applications on behalf of asset managers including BlackRock (BLK.N) and Fidelity, the source added on Friday. Bitcoin , which has jumped since BlackRock filed its application on June 15, fell after the Wall Street Journal first reported the SEC rejection on Friday. The SEC, Fidelity, BlackRock and Nasdaq declined to comment on the report, while Cboe was not immediately available. The SEC has rejected dozens of spot bitcoin ETF applications in recent years, including one from Fidelity in January 2022. In a bid to address these concerns, the BlackRock and Fidelity filings proposed a surveillance mechanism aimed at preventing manipulation, but the applicants did not name which bitcoin exchange would be involved.

June 29 (Reuters) - Asset manager Fidelity is once again seeking to list and trade shares of its Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund, according to a filing by listing exchange Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z) with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Fidelity is one of several big asset managers that have applied to list bitcoin ETFs recent weeks. The SEC has rejected dozens of spot bitcoin ETF applications in the past few years, including one from Fidelity in January 2022. The first bitcoin futures ETF was approved in October 2021, helping send the volatile bitcoin to an all-time high of $69,000 in November 2021, and raising hopes that a spot bitcoin ETF would soon be approved. If approved, a bitcoin ETF from the world's biggest asset manager could attract investors reluctant to buy the high-risk cryptocurrency directly. Digital asset manager Grayscale had its proposal for a spot bitcoin ETF rejected last year. LESS CAPITAL OVERALLAfter surprise rate hikes in Australia and Canada, and as the Federal Reserve forecasts two more hikes, investors are now betting that interest rates will remain higher for longer. Bitcoin had benefited from ultra-low interest rates, which incentivised investors to take riskier bets in search of returns. "Albeit - there are likely to be further challenges with interest rates continuing to increase," he said.

BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust will use Coinbase Custody as its custodian, according to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Last year, BlackRock launched a spot bitcoin private trust for institutional clients in the United States. A spot bitcoin ETF would track bitcoin's underlying market price. The SEC rejected Grayscale Investment LLC’s application last year to convert its flagship spot Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC.PK) into an ETF. The SEC has also rejected proposals for spot bitcoin ETFs from firms including Fidelity, Cboe Global Markets and NYDIG.

The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission approved Cboe Digital to be the first U.S.-regulated crypto exchange and clearinghouse platform to offer leveraged derivatives when the contracts launch in the second half. The margined contracts will let users trade crypto futures while putting less collateralized capital up front, with trades executed and cleared through an approved set of member futures commission merchants, Chicago-based Cboe said. Cboe Digital currently allows trading and clearing of bitcoin and ether futures on a fully collateralized basis, meaning users must provide the full amount of futures contracts upfront. Cboe Digital also supports the spot trading of bitcoin, bitcoin cash, ether, litecoin and USDC. Exchange operator Cboe launches global listing offering

NEW YORK, June 2 (Reuters) - Exchange operator Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z) said on Friday it will let companies list across its U.S. and international exchanges, expanding in a fiercely competitive field dominated in the United States by the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Inc (NDAQ.O). Cboe, which has stock exchanges in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region, currently lists only its own stock, along with exchange-traded funds, on its U.S. exchange. But financial software firm Abaxx Technologies Inc (ABXX.NLB), which is listed on Cboe Canada, has received conditional approval to be intralisted on Cboe U.S., the exchange operator said. "Cboe has built an expansive, global equities footprint unrivalled in the industry that uniquely positions us to deliver the first-ever truly global listing experience for issuers seeking to tap new markets beyond their home region," Dave Howson, global president of Cboe Global Markets, said in a statement. Exchanges earn recurring revenue from listings and charge various listing fees based on factors such as the amount of shares a company lists.

May 5 (Reuters) - Cboe Global Markets (CBOE.Z), reported a rise in first-quarter profit on Friday, as the exchange operator's trading volumes swelled on heightened market fluctuations amid a banking crisis and rising interest rates. The Chicago-based company, which provides trading platforms for equities, foreign exchange and derivative products across markets in different regions, saw a 13% rise in net revenue to $471.4 million. Cboe's results wrapped up a strong quarter for exchange operators. Earlier this week, New York Stock Exchange-parent Intercontinental Exchange Inc (ICE.N) reported upbeat results. Last month, both Nasdaq Inc (NDAQ.O) and CME Group Inc (CME.O) also beat profit estimates.

As recession fears keep flaring up again on Wall Street, investors can find safety in cheap, dependable, defensive stocks, according to UBS. The UBS playbook advises investors to stick to defensive stocks rather than the types of cyclical companies stocks that have benefited from high inflation. To be sure, investors have worried that defensive stocks have grown too expensive. But UBS pointed to several defensive groups that remain cheap, including telecom and insurance. Given this backdrop, here are some of UBS' cheap defensive stocks.

Credit Suisse thinks Cboe Global Markets is a defensive addition to any portfolio during these volatile times. Analyst Gautam Sawant elevated Cboe to the bank's top exchange sector pick, saying that shares should benefit from index options growth momentum as uncertainty and concerns of an economic slowdown linger. The coast may be clearing on interest rates but a spluttering economy still has the power to check runaway stock markets. Friday's release of January's U.S. employment report will provide some clues - but Big Tech gave its own readout on Thursday. Apple earnings fell short of expectations and it forecast revenue would fall for a second quarter in a row. But even though iPhone sales fell for the first time since 2020, it said sales were likely to improve as production had returned to normal in China after COVID-related shutdowns. To what extent layoffs in the tech sector are fanning out across the economy will be monitored in the payrolls report later and the Fed will be watching wage growth like a hawk.
