Ethanol producer and agri-tech company Green Plains said Wednesday that it would initiate a strategic review, a year after activist investor Ancora sent a letter to its board encouraging it to do just that. Ancora, a 6.8% shareholder per FactSet data, and Green Plains have also signed a cooperation agreement, which includes a standstill. The strategic review will explore value enhancements up to and including a merger or sale, the company said. Green Plains had diversified beyond pure-play ethanol production to build out clean sugar and corn oil production. Green Plains is one of the largest domestic producers of ethanol and was founded in 2004.

Using the CNBC Pro Stock Screener tool, we screened for the most overbought and oversold names in the S & P 500 based on their 14-day relative strength index, or RSI. Stocks with a 14-day RSI greater than 70 are considered overbought, meaning they could be at risk of a pullback. Conversely, stocks with a reading lower than 30 typically means that they're oversold and possibly gearing up for a short-term bounce. Energy tech services provider Baker Hughes was one of the few oversold names that analysts have a buy rating on, according to CNBC's screen. Of the overbought names, Boston Scientific has the highest potential upside according to analysts surveyed by LSEG, at about 9.3%.

All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

DHL Cargo planes are unloaded at Halle-Leipzig Airport on February 28, 2014 in Leipzig, Germany. Up to 60 cargo planes land every weeknight. The Houthi attacks in the Red Sea are not only driving up sea freight — air freights are going to get higher too, as global trade flows get increasingly disrupted. This means that air cargo is about to play an expanded role in the supply chain ecosystem. Air freight can slash delivery times to just a few days compared to weeks taken by ocean carriers.

How the Red Sea crisis could clobber the global economy

The Suez Canal accounts for 10-15% of world trade, which includes oil exports, and for 30% of global container shipping volumes. Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc told the Financial Times Thursday that re-establishing safe passage through the Red Sea could take “months.” “It could potentially have quite significant consequences on global (economic) growth,” he added. Ikea has warned of shipment delays and potential shortages of certain products due to disruption in the Red Sea. Some ocean carriers that ordinarily transit through the Panama Canal had rerouted to the Suez Canal before the attacks in the Red Sea escalated, according to logistics company C.H. Matthew Burgess, vice-president of global ocean services at the firm, said global shipping capacity would be constrained for a while yet.

watch nowThe global shipping industry has been mired in a freight recession this year and the challenging economic conditions will continue into 2024, according to a new CNBC Supply Chain Survey. The CNBC Supply Chain Survey was conducted October 21-October 31 among logistics executives who manage freight manufacturing orders and transportation, including those at C.H. "Without more freight moving, 2024, and potentially 2025, will continue to see soft pricing as capacity outstrips demand," he said. Freight trucking will remain soft Trucking companies get paid per load, and low expectations for orders imply potentially lower revenue this holiday season. A slightly better second half 2024 outlook The survey shows expectations for a slight turnaround in freight volume in the second half of 2024.

London CNN —A painting valued at $15,000 just two years ago is now expected to fetch up to $18 million at auction after being identified as the work of the Dutch master Rembrandt. Extensive tests revealed changes that Rembrandt had made to the painting. The examination, which involved x-rays and infrared imaging, as well as intensive discussions with leading Rembrandt scholars, led Sotheby’s to conclude the painting is “an autograph work by Rembrandt.” It now values the work at between £10 million and £15 million ($12.2 million-$18.3 million). Thereafter, the painting was “entirely overlooked and completely ignored in the Rembrandt literature,” according to Sothebys. “This sophisticated painting is in equal measure a product of Rembrandt’s brush and his intellect.

A small handful of experts claim to have evidence that our satellite produces forces that can trigger earthquakes. The moon's effect on earthquakes was hiddenScientists have long pondered whether the moon's tides could be linked to earthquakes. And it seems that in some cases, the moon did help trigger earthquakes around the world. By digging into these datasets, a few studies have suggested a link between Earth tides and earthquakes. Rather, it is when the rock is on the very brink of collapse that the moon's small tug could push it past that final tipping point.

Charles III has commissioned new works for his coronation, adding to the rich tapestry of pieces composed for the occasion. The first coronation music was likely sung chants, which, starting in 1603 with the coronation of James I, were refashioned into coronation anthems now with English text. Both have since become staples in the coronation service. And at the most recent coronation, comparisons between Elizabeth II and Charles III are unsurprisingly being made. Charles III’s coronation is set to usher in the new Carolean era, in the hopes that it will reflect its namesake Charles II and his contributions to art and music.
