US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has raised the cost of applying for or renewing its Trusted Traveler Programs – a catchall term that covers Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI – from $100 to $120, as of October 1. The only exception is for minors: those under the age of 18 whose parents are enrolled in Global Entry and other Trusted Traveler Programs will not have to pay a fee. Global Entry launched in 2008. Signing up for Global Entry requires an application process and in-person interview in addition to the nonrefundable application fee. Travelers with Global Entry can use dedicated fast lanes at US airports.

Membership prices for the expedited security program Global Entry are increasing for the first time ever, from $100 to $120 for both new members and renewals, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. However, the price hike takes effect Oct. 1, so you can still lock in the current price by applying or renewing before then. Keep in mind that you can only renew a year in advance, so if your current membership is valid beyond October 2025, the higher fee will apply. While adults can save by renewing before Oct. 1, it's better to wait if you have kids. From Oct. 1, children under 18 will no longer have to pay the $100 membership fee.

SHENZHEN, China — Chinese vendor Yin Xinwei sometimes makes close to $1,400 a day selling low-priced pill boxes, barbecue spits and other items to U.S. online consumers. Each year hundreds of millions of packages, mostly from Chinese platforms, are sent directly to American consumers eager to take advantage of rock-bottom prices on clothing, electronics and other products. That could mean painful times ahead for the Chinese sellers that supply the platforms — and higher prices for American consumers. Chinese state media has criticized the proposal as protectionist and say it will hurt American consumers. Yin used to sell to Chinese consumers but has given up his domestic business to focus entirely on the overseas market.

The program had marked a shift in Denver’s strategy of housing migrants in massive temporary shelters to providing individual resources. CNN —US officials on Monday touted another month of low border crossings, citing recent executive action curbing asylum access at the US southern border, even as former President Donald Trump levels campaign attacks over the Biden administration’s handling of border security. But while border crises have dogged administration officials for the better part of Joe Biden’s presidency, the number of people illegally crossing the border over the last two months has drastically fallen. Encounters between ports of entry have decreased by more than 50% and are the lowest since September 2020, according to US Customs and Border Protection. In September 2020, Border Patrol recorded 54,771 encounters along the US southern border. Administration officials cite the executive action that Biden announced in June, which largely bars migrants from seeking asylum at the US southern border, for the dramatic decline in crossings.

Discussing the US southern border, Trump asserted that “more terrorists have come into the United States in the last three years. In fact, there have been no reported terrorist attacks in the US during the past three years carried out by jihadist terrorists crossing the southern border. The ordinarily voluble Trump typically doesn’t have much to say when far-right domestic terrorists perpetrate terrorism in the United States. To be sure, there are reasonable concerns about the southern border, like the fact that, as CNN reported in June, eight Tajikistan nationals in the US who had crossed the southern border were arrested on immigration charges “following the discovery of potential ties to terrorism,” including possibly to ISIS. This is all a far cry from Trump’s claim on Fox that “more terrorists have come into the United States in the last three years.

Justice Clarence Thomas failed to publicly disclose additional private travel provided by the wealthy conservative donor Harlan Crow, a top Democratic senator said in a letter on Monday. Customs and Border Protection records revealed that the justice and his wife, Virginia Thomas, took a round trip between Hawaii and New Zealand in November 2010 on Mr. Crow’s private jet, according to the letter. Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, writing to Mr. Crow’s lawyer, demanded that he supply more information about the financial relationship between the two men. The letter, part of an inquiry that Mr. Wyden, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, has opened into Mr. Crow and the justice, comes as top Democrats have urged major changes to the Supreme Court, including an enforceable code of conduct.
