Billy Joel’s first new pop song in nearly two decades was sparked by someone miles from the record business: a Long Island doctor. Joel, 74, has long made it known that he isn’t interested in making more albums. (“He is everything,” Olivia Rodrigo, 20, who referenced him in her song “Deja Vu,” said last summer.) Over the years, the list of people who’d tried to cajole him back into writing and recording grew legion: Clive Davis. Yet when Joel’s family doctor urged him to meet “a kid” interested in discussing music near his place out east in Sag Harbor, he agreed to a lunch.

Billy Joel is releasing his first single in 17 years

CNN —Billy Joel has delighted his fans with news that he is about to release his first new single in 17 years. “It’s TIME TO TURN THE LIGHTS BACK ON,” he wrote on X, referencing the name of the song to be released on February 1. The clip describes “Turn the Lights Back On” as “the first new single in decades,” though that may be a slight stretch. Joel’s most recent single, “All My Life,” was released in 2007, which was his first new music since his album “River of Dreams” was released in 1993. On Wednesday, he will play a one-night concert in Tokyo before returning to Madison Square Garden on February 9.

In Praise of Whistling in Pop Music
  + stars: | 2024-01-23 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On Monday, Joel announced he’ll be releasing his first new pop single in nearly two decades next week. While listening to “The Stranger” over the weekend, I found myself considering the pop musical whistle. It’s such a simple expression, but in a song it can convey a wide range of feelings and tones. While we await Joel’s latest, “Turn the Lights Back On” (which may or may not feature a whistle break), today’s playlist is a homage to the pop musical whistle, in all its glory and multitudes. And if you don’t know how to whistle along, you can always consult Lauren Bacall.

Now that she’s released the deluxe edition — in honor of her 78th birthday, on Friday! — Dolly Parton’s already sprawling double album “Rockstar” runs nearly three hours long and clocks in at an indefatigably rockin’ 39 tracks. “I know the game, you’ll forget my name,” she sings, with a slight ache in her voice. “And I won’t be here in another year, if I don’t stay on the charts.” Given that “Rockstar” became the highest-charting album of Parton’s career just a few months ago, that fate seems, blessedly, unlikely. Olivia Rodrigo, the bearer of perhaps the most famous driver’s license in Los Angeles, piloted her black Range Rover to Westwood on a scorching late July afternoon. Six weeks remained before the release of her second album, “Guts,” and she was racked with anxiety — about finding a spot for her SUV. The car was her dream purchase, her favorite place to listen to music and yes, she feels guilty about the gas. ‘Wham!’ Review: They Made It Big, Then Broke Up

The new documentary about George Michael, Andrew Ridgeley and the music they made as Wham! — it’s just called “Wham!” — found me in a moment of need for a nostalgic, fantastical elixir, something short, sweet and tangential to my feeling of national blues. For one thing, Wham!, the duo, made soul music that popped. And the movie dances past all of the thorny moral and ethical questions of white people making Black stuff. The disembodied voices of Michael and Ridgeley guide the whole thing — rumination and memory as narration.

He continued, “This song was omnipresent in that era, but in a way where it crept through the cracks of pop culture. “It’s interesting to see what he referenced from the ’50s and ’60s and what he didn’t. “I think every generation gets their own ‘We Didn’t Start the Fire,’” Mr. Gerber said. I think a lot of people actually hated the song at the time. So it’s funny, because I’m also seeing a lot of people criticizing the song thinking it’s ridiculous, but it’s also just a ridiculous song to begin with.”
