North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to override the Democratic governor's vetoes on two election bills on Tuesday, giving themselves new power over election administration and shortening a key voting deadline ahead of the 2024 election. Currently, all election boards in the state are controlled by the governor's party, with nominations made by state parties and appointments made by the governor. "The legislative takeover of state and local elections boards could doom our state's elections to gridlock and severely limit early voting," Cooper said when he vetoed the bill. If county or state election boards do not approve early voting sites and schedules in accordance with state law, early voting can only take place at the county board of elections office. In populous counties, that could leave hundreds of thousands of voters with just one early voting option.

The report stressed, however, that the difficulty in making a legal claim to compensation "cannot be the basis for nullifying the existence of underlying legal obligations". The notion of paying reparations or making other amends for slavery has a long history but the movement has recently gained momentum worldwide amid growing demands from African and Caribbean countries. The EU said in July that Europe's slave-trading past inflicted "untold suffering" on millions of people and hinted at the need for reparations for what it described as a "crime against humanity". The report concluded that states should consider a "plurality of measures" to address the legacies of enslavement and colonialism, including pursuing justice and reparations, and contributing to reconciliation. What’s the last great book you read? I loved the pair of Gwendoline Riley novels NYRB put out last year, “My Phantoms” and “First Love.” I enjoy reading about awful, sickening people, and these books are filled with them. But they’re awful and sickening in a way that, while not unfamiliar to my life experience, felt new — they’re awful and sickening in a way I’d not seen in literature before. Can a great book be badly written? I bought a book called “The Loser,” by William Hoffman Jr., based on its incredible cover (Funk & Wagnalls hardcover edition circa 1968).

Some 36 years on and seven National Rugby League (NRL) titles later, the 73-year-old supercoach will plot the Sharks' downfall again on Saturday when he coaches the Dolphins in his 900th championship match. Emotions may run high during the game, but the famously taciturn Bennett will likely have his usual poker-face on while looking to engineer victory. Tributes from players, fellow coaches and NRL head office have rained down on the luminary this week. No NRL coach has come close to Bennett's tally of games, with second-placed Tim Sheens, the 72-year-old Wests Tigers manager, yet to crack 700. He wandered into it when asked to mentor a junior side at Queensland's police academy after the team's coach fell ill.
In a break with tradition, the public will be invited to pledge allegiance to King Charles III during the coronation ceremony on Saturday May 6. While many Brits I’ve spoken to are simply indifferent to the proposed pledge, there has also been an unprecedent degree of public vitriol over the scheme. Yet, objections to the proposed pledge are as much about its content as its form. The proposed coronation pledge, in contrast, invites Britons to pledge their loyalty to the King, and to his “heirs and successors” – a positively undemocratic pronouncement. That complexity cannot simply be smoothed away by inviting people to pledge allegiance to the crown.
CNN —Ahead of the sixth and final season of its hit royal drama “The Crown,” Netflix has offered fans a first peek at the actors who will be playing Prince William and Kate Middleton. A first look at Prince William (Ed McVey) and Kate Middleton (Meg Bellamy) from the sixth and ~final~ season of The Crown, coming later this year. The other images shared show Kate in a classroom, and William sitting on a sofa, wearing a blazer and tie. While William has appeared in the show as a child, the forthcoming season will depict him as an adult for the first time. Created by Peter Morgan, “The Crown” has become one of Netflix’s most successful original series since its premiere in 2016.
With more than 250,000 followers and 2.7 million likes, Chef Way grew to stardom on TikTok for his cooking videos. But now, the social media influencer who is an assistant district attorney in Texas is facing backlash for his previous comments belittling Black women — particularly those with dark skin. In a series of deleted tweets that date back to 2015 from @WaymoTheGod, Chef Way, whose real name is Waymond Wesley, posted demeaning photos and made misogynistic comments about Black women. “To those I’ve hurt with my past tweets that have resurfaced, I am deeply sorry,” he wrote. “Women of color have been too forgiving in the past, which put some of us in undesirable positions and unhealthy situations,” one user tweeted.

REUTERS/Gilbert BellamyKINGSTON, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness renewed states of emergency in eight parishes on Wednesday to control an ongoing threat of crime linked to gang activity in the Caribbean nation. Holness on Nov. 15 had announced regional states of emergency, which allow authorities to search buildings and arrest citizens without a warrant. Police Commissioner Antony Anderson told the same press conference that Jamaica recorded an average of nearly five murders per day in September. The previous states of emergency, as well as new firearms legislation, have caused violent crime to decline, he said. There were 1,463 murders in Jamaica in 2021, with gang activity accounting for 71% of these, according to official data.

The theatrical release comes after the project appeared last month at New York’s premier LGBTQ film festival, NewFest. The film, which is loosely based on Bratton’s life, focuses on the challenges the main character, Ellis French, experiences as a young gay Black man during the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” era. However, in describing his tumultuous family life, Bratton recalled the time his mother invited him to film his sister’s school graduation. Prior to “The Inspection,” Bratton directed other LGBTQ projects, including the 2019 documentary “Pier Kids,” about queer and transgender youths living at Manhattan’s Christopher Street Pier. Bratton described Union as a dedicated ally for the LGBTQ community — who revived his mom for the world to see.
REUTERS/Gilbert BellamyKINGSTON, Nov 15 (Reuters) - Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness on Tuesday declared a state of public emergency in parts of the capital Kingston and in some central and western parishes in an attempt to control rising crime linked to gang violence. States of emergency give authorities increased powers, including the ability to search buildings and carry out arrests without warrants. "What we are seeing with gang activities in these areas is cause for grave concern," he added. Holness predicted an increase in murders over the next several weeks with the onset of the holiday season, when violent crime typically spikes. Gang violence was the reason for 71% of those murders, he said.
Lena Horne made history this week as the first Black woman to have a Broadway theater named in her honor. The Brooks Atkinson Theatre on West 47th Street, near Broadway in Manhattan’s Theater District, was renamed the Lena Horne Theatre on Tuesday in recognition of the famed performer and civil rights activist. The Lena Horne Theatre seats more than 1,000 people and is one of nine Broadway theaters throughout New York City belonging to the Nederlander Organization. The Lena Horne Theatre was previously named the Brooks Atkinson Theatre and the Mansfield Theatre. Horne won several awards during her career, including two Grammys, in 1982 and 1996, along with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 1989.
With the release of director Chinonye Chukwu’s “Till,” the conversation of the nation’s racist history and violence toward Black people is being revisited. Deadwyler told NBC News that the telling of Till’s story today is just as important as it was decades ago. “In the United States, we tend to think of our history in romantic terms,” Glaude told NBC News. The Senate passed a bill in January posthumously awarding Till and his mother the Congressional Gold Medal. But, Glaude said, even with these initiatives, without a racially just America, Till “died in vain.”“We can never forget,” he added.
