It makes sense, then, that as the fog of my grief began to clear, I felt the familiar pull to set resolutions and start anew. So, here’s my pitch: Instead of setting a series of resolutions for the year, or even a monthlong goal (I’m looking at you, #DryJanuary), try taking things week by week. We also have a prompt to reflect on one good moment from the past week, thanks to a suggestion from a reader. We’ve created different versions of the document so that you can set intentions solo or share them with a friend. Setting weekly intentions has also helped me complete dull but important tasks I may otherwise put off.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A bill to create a bipartisan commission that would tackle the nation’s soaring debt and make policy recommendations to Congress won approval Thursday from a House committee. Many Democrats see the commission as an attempt to force cuts to Social Security and Medicare. The commission would have 16 members: 12 from Congress, evenly divided by party, and four outside experts who would not have voting power. Republicans blame federal spending for the annual deficits while many Democrats cite tax cuts enacted under Republican administrations. Three committee Democrats voted for it, including Rep. Scott Peters, D-Calif., who worked with Rep. Bill Huizenga, R-Mich. in sponsoring the bill.

How the U.S. courted the Philippines to thwart China

What followed was two trips to the United States in less than a year for Marcos, and visits to the Philippines by high-ranking Biden administration officials. Marcos’ predecessor, the populist firebrand Rodrigo Duterte, was openly hostile to the United States and attempted to bring his country closer to communist China during his six-year term. For the United States, cementing alliances in the Asia-Pacific region is likewise crucial to keeping China in check. China’s Foreign Ministry, in a statement to Reuters, characterized China and the Philippines as “close neighbors across the sea” with a common interest in friendship. At the time, he said the cancellation of his visa was the latest in a list of “gripes and disrespect” by the United States.

The country's canned seafood industry is moving well beyond tuna sandwiches, a pandemic-era trend that began with Americans in lockdown demanding more of their cupboard staples. U.S. canned seafood industry sales have grown from $2.3 billion in 2018 to more than $2.7 billion so far this year, according to market research firm Circana. “I was eating the same canned fish that my great grandmother Rose in Brooklyn was eating in the 1930s," she said. “I thought that was just insane.”Her company, Fishwife Tinned Seafood Co., set out to offer high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood. “Our mission is really to just galvanize the canned fish industry and transform and make it what we think it can be,” Millstein said, adding that means offering much more “than tuna fish sandwiches."

Millennial and Gen Z parents are struggling

AdvertisementMillennial and Gen Z parents are finding themselves isolated. But they and Gen Zers behind them have finally caught up to previous generations in terms of their income, Jean Twenge, a psychologist and the author of "Generations: The Real Differences Between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X, Boomers, and Silents—and What They Mean for America's Future," told me. As fast as the money comes in from the pay raises that millennials and Gen Zers have secured, for parents the money goes right back out. These realities can force many millennial and Gen Z parents to make tough choices. But, at the same time, young parents are fleeing those walkable cities for the towns next door.

Stoffels owns this land, but leases it to Lightsource BP, a major solar energy developer that's 50% owned by British oil major BP. An emerging industry called agrivoltaics combines solar energy production with agricultural activities such as sheep grazing, beekeeping and crop growing. Today, the U.S. has about five gigawatts of agrivoltaic projects, encompassing more than 35,000 acres across over 30 different states. Shell is also involved in the space through its 44% stake in solar developer Silicon Ranch. Two Republican lawmakers have filed separate resolutions to censure Tlaib this week, after a similar effort failed last week. “I have been really careful, partly because our Michigan delegation is so small, and we work together,” Stevens told CNN. “Democratic Rep. Last week, 23 House Republicans opposed a Tlaib censure resolution led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. How to Change Your Mind-Set About Aging
  + stars: | 2023-09-20 | by ( Holly Burns | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
From the crotchety neighbor to the clueless Luddite, negative stereotypes of aging are everywhere. To change your negative age beliefs, you first need to become more aware of them, Dr. Levy said. “People can strengthen their positive age beliefs at any age,” Dr. Levy said. In one 2014 study, 100 adults — with an average age of 81 — who were exposed to positive images of aging showed both improved perceptions of aging and improved physical function. Find aging role models.

But I don’t think we’re all aware of the age beliefs. To do that, researchers like him are targeting the essential biology of aging – the underlying reasons why we get old. When those biological processes fail or break down, we get sick – and aging is the biggest risk factor for that deterioration. In the meantime, though, remember this: Aging is probably not nearly as bad as you might imagine. And as my mom told me, we should all truly embrace getting older, because it sure as heck beats the alternative.

Otherwise, Raskin cautioned, the panel's reputation "is rapidly being reduced to the level of a 1970s-era dime store peep show." The Georgia Republican has alleged based on purported information obtained from Hunter Biden's laptop that he paid sex workers, potentially violating the century-plus old Mann Act. Rep. According to the report, 92% of House Republicans have voted with the Georgia Republican more than 90% of the time. A House Democrat may force the House to vote on formally censuring Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. Among the offending behavior is Greene's decision to show nude photos of Hunter Biden during a House hearing. Balint could use a procedural move to force the House to consider formally punishing Greene, The Washington Post reported. A separate effort is underway to censure Rep. George Santos, a New York Republican, who has admitted to falsifying multiple claims during his campaign and is facing federal fraud charges. "And that is absolutely what I regret," Greene said on the House floor before the vote.

Supporters of student debt forgiveness demonstrate outside the U.S. Supreme Court on June 30, 2023, in Washington, DC. Student loan forgiveness is federally tax-free through 2025 because of a provision from the American Rescue Plan of 2021, Biden's $1.9 trillion Covid-19 stimulus package. While the Tax Foundation estimated that seven states could tax student loan forgiveness in August 2022, it's still possible to see legislative changes. "No one wants to be the state that's taxing loan forgiveness," Miller added. While public service loan forgiveness has always been tax-free, the current taxation for income-driven repayment plans is only temporary.

When they say opposites attract, they might well be talking about wealthy Texas couple John Thrash and his wife, Becca Cason Thrash. While Mr. Thrash, a green energy entrepreneur and architecture wonk, sometimes hides from the spotlight, his wife admits she courts it shamelessly. In some ways, their elaborate Texas home, slated to come up for auction next month with a guide price of $19.5 million, is the physical manifestation of those differences. When Mr. Thrash, 68, built the home in the late 1990s, he was inspired by his love of the work of both Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright. He envisioned doing some entertaining, but he didn’t count on the property becoming Houston’s party central.

As details of the shooter's identity began to emerge, some prominent Republican elected officials zeroed in on Hale's reported transgender identity. Courtesy of Elizabeth MorganElizabeth Morgan, who sells handmade earrings on Etsy, said that she raised her prices by about 5% after Etsy raised fees last year. The Etsy fee hike has been more impactful, however.
