In October, white Americans saw their jobless rate rise to 3.8% from 3.6% in the month prior. On the other hand, the jobless rates for both white men and women edged higher in October. While Hispanic women saw their jobless rate climb to 5.2% from 4.8%, unemployment rates for their male counterparts slid to 4.0% from 4.1%. The unemployment rate also ticked lower for Black women to 4.9% from 5.3%, while it climbed to 5.7% from 5.1% for Black men.

In 2020, Asian American turnout in Georgia surged by 84% compared with the previous presidential election, playing a larger role than ever in an election that Joe Biden won by a very narrow margin. And much has been made of the local Asian community since then. Many are also newer immigrants, so specific ethnicity — Korean or Vietnamese, for example — is more of an identity than simply being Asian American. “National identity matters a lot more than their pan ethnic or racial identity,” said Karthick Ramakrishnan, founder of AAPI Data, a research group. Asian Americans now make up 12% of the electorate in Nevada, with Filipinos being the largest subgroup. In 2020, President Joe Biden won 64% of the state’s Asian American vote, while Trump took 35%. But in 2022, support in the Nevada governor’s race was more split among the local Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community, which only voted blue by an 8% margin. As Election Day approaches, the campaigns are putting significant time and attention toward courting Black men, seen as a crucial — and potentially movable — voting bloc in a tight presidential race. However, that number drops to 68% for Black men under 50, compared to 21% who support Trump. “It’s very important to not operate from the assumption that Black men are in anybody’s pocket,” she said during an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists in September. An Orange County, California, man has been arrested in connection with acts of vandalism in which anti-Asian slurs that were spray-painted over campaign signs for Democratic congressional candidate Dave Min, who’s Korean American. It comes after reports of two separate incidents in which signs were spray-painted with an anti-Korean derogatory term. A video documenting the vandalism, that was posted on the Democratic candidate’s social media, shows the hate speech, written in silver paint, across a row of signs. Police said they first responded to a report of vandalism last Tuesday, when they found Min signs defaced with the offensive language. “The Huntington Beach Police Department takes vandalism seriously, particularly when it involves hate speech,” the police said in a news release last week.

“Pinoy Pride” slogans, meals with community members, in-language ads and recruiting Filipino Americans for the campaign. With just over a month before the election, Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has been courting a group of Asian American voters, Filipino Americans, that may play a decisive role in the crucial swing state of Nevada. While Asian Americans make up almost 12% of Nevada’s electorate, well over the previous margin of victory, Filipino Americans constitute by far the largest ethnic group in that demographic. The ad blitz follows several other efforts made in the past few months to mobilize the Asian American community. With a month to go, Abby Herrera, a 19-year-old Filipino American organizer with grassroots nonprofit One APIA Nevada, said more can always be done to attract Filipino American voters.

In younger women, rates have increased at a faster clip — by about 1.4% every year since 2021. Among Asian American and Pacific Islander women under 50, breast cancer diagnoses have increased by 50% since 2000. Today, Black women are 5% less likely to get breast cancer than white women, but are nearly 40% more likely to die from the disease. The American Cancer Society researchers noted that this disparity is seen in even the most treatable types of breast cancer. Each person’s family and personal history and genetics will also determine when they should start screening for breast cancer.

A poll released last week from AAPI Data, a data analytics firm that focuses on Asian Americans, found that 66% of Asian American voters plan to support Harris and 28% intend to back Trump. The same survey found that 62% of Asian American voters say they have a favorable opinion of Harris, compared with 35% who hold an unfavorable view. Republican officials declined to elaborate on efforts to win over Asian American voters. The Harris campaign has three full-time staffers at the national headquarters dedicated to engaging Asian American voters, a spokeswoman said, with additional staff being deployed to Georgia and other battleground states. As she presided over a virtual phone bank from her kitchen one night last week, she said she believed Asian American voters could make the difference in her Southern battleground state.
