WSJ’s Asa Fitch breaks down how Nvidia broke into the exclusive club of companies that have a $1 trillion market cap. Photo illustration: Annie ZhaoUnlike many of its megacap tech peers, Intel came into the current earnings season with the benefit of low expectations. But the storied chip maker still has some very high hurdles to hit over the longer term, including a need for not being left out of the artificial intelligence gold rush.

Qualcomm, which sells communication and data-processing chips crucial in phones from Apple and Samsung , has been whipsawed in recent quarters by flagging handset sales even as it sees growth in newer markets for its chips, including the automotive industry.
Intel Faces a Long Climb Back from the Bottom

Intel has ruled the market for central processing units since the 1980s. But rival AMD overtook Intel in market value last year, thanks in part to an expensive bet on chip design. Intel hitting rock bottom isn’t a pretty sight, but it is still a welcome one. The chip maker’s first-quarter results late Thursday took the “better than feared” concept to a new level. In another first, Intel actually lost money in its data-center segment—a business that generated operating margins of 50% in the same quarter just three years prior.
Intel has ruled the market for central processing units since the 1980s. But rival AMD overtook Intel in market value last year, thanks in part to an expensive bet on chip design. WSJ’s Asa Fitch explains the companies’ battle for the brains of your computer. Intel Corp. is expected to report its largest-ever quarterly loss Thursday, driven by a sharp fall in personal-computer sales and rising competition. Sales are expected to fall to a low not seen since 2010, with Wall Street expecting Intel to post revenue of $11 billion for the first quarter, according to analysts surveyed by FactSet.
Intel Corp. suffered its largest-ever quarterly loss and said it would remain in the red as it prepares for the market recovering from the sharp fall in personal-computer sales that hammered its business. Sales fell to a level not seen since 2010. Intel on Thursday posted revenue of $11.7 billion for the first quarter, above estimates from analysts surveyed by FactSet. That marked a 36% decline from the prior-year period.
The U.S. encouraged China to set up a robust antitrust regime. Now, Beijing is holding back its required green light for mergers that involve American companies as a technology war with Washington intensifies. Chinese regulators recently have slowed down their merger reviews of a number of proposed acquisitions by U.S. companies, including Intel Corp.’s $5.2 billion takeover of Israel-based Tower Semiconductor Ltd. and chip maker MaxLinear Inc.’s $3.8 billion purchase of Silicon Motion Technology of Taiwan, according to people close to the process.
Chinese authorities announced a cybersecurity investigation into U.S. computer-memory maker Micron Technology Inc., a move that is likely to put global firms operating in China further on edge at a time of escalating U.S.-China tension. The Cyberspace Administration of China said it would review Micron’s products sold in China, citing the need to safeguard the supply chain for critical information infrastructure.
Gordon Moore , the electronics pioneer who co-founded Intel Corp. and whose groundbreaking theories defined the tempo of innovation in semiconductors, has died at the age of 94. A 1965 article by Mr. Moore published in the trade journal Electronics predicted the pace of miniaturization in computer chips and anticipated the development of home computers, smart wristwatches, automatic controls for cars and other inventions as electronic components etched on squares of silicon become smaller, faster and cheaper. Moore’s Law, as his prediction became known, proved a remarkably accurate observation about how quickly engineers would create advances in digital technology that have led to countless fixtures of modern life.
The U.S. moved this month to cut off a Chinese conglomerate’s access to Western technology, but the firm can still secure those goods through a technicality that some former senior officials say is a major loophole in the U.S. export-control regime. U.S. companies are barred from exporting to companies named on the Commerce Department’s so-called Entity List, unless they get approval. But listed companies can still buy U.S. goods through subsidiaries that aren’t on the Entity List, current and former government and industry officials say. Industry officials say some U.S. companies intend to keep selling high-tech goods to Chinese companies in that manner.
EVs Boost Chip Demand Despite Semiconductor Makers’ Woes

Tesla’s demand for automotive chips will increase as it moves toward the goal of producing 20 million vehicles a year by 2030. Chip sales that have declined across many customer segments are still enjoying one area of rising demand: cars. Growing sales of electric vehicles—which tend to use more semiconductors than their gas-powered counterparts—coupled with greater automation of all vehicles, have kept producers of chips for cars busy. The long-term outlook for the market appears robust, Tesla Inc. suggested this past week, as Chief Executive Elon Musk detailed plans for his car company to scale up to 20 million vehicles a year by 2030, from around 1.3 million in 2022.
