Procter & Gamble on Friday reported weaker-than-expected revenue as lower demand in China again weighed on its sales. The company reported flat volume for the quarter. The metric excludes pricing, which makes it a more accurate reflection of demand than sales. The company called out volume declines in China for both its hair care and oral care segments. Both P&G's health care and baby, feminine and family care divisions both reported 1% declines in volume for the quarter.

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris face off in the ABC presidential debate on Sept. 10, 2024. The previous Trump administration didn't pursue those types of consumer protections. In contrast, Democrats, including Harris, have historically supported EVs and incentives such as those under the Biden administration's signature Inflation Reduction Act. Meanwhile, Harris, if elected, can build on existing efforts of the Biden administration to deliver savings to more patients, they said. Trump also led multiple efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, including its expansion of Medicaid to low-income adults.

Like many food companies, Pepsi has been trying to shift its portfolio to include healthier options in recent years, usually through acquisitions. Soon that will also include Siete. Angela Weiss | AFP | Getty ImagesAs she unveiled her most detailed economic plan yet this week, Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris pledged to fight price gouging in order to rein in voters' grocery costs. Although Harris released more detail Wednesday as part of her 82-page economic plan, it's still unclear what price hikes her administration would see as illegal "price gouging." Generally, Republicans support fewer economic regulations, although Trump has suggested limiting food imports as a way to lower grocery prices. What is price gouging? Thirty-seven U.S. states already have laws that forbid price gouging in emergencies.

Stouffer's is exiting the freezer aisle and taking on Kraft Heinz with its new shelf-stable mac and cheese. The average American consumer eats mac and cheese 22 times a year, trailing only pizza in its frequency, according to Moe. Out of those 22 occasions, the mac and cheese comes from a box about 70% of the time. To start, under the name Stouffer's Supreme, the brand will offer two variations on boxed mac and cheese: a classic cheddar and a three-cheese version made with cheddar, gouda and parmesan. Moe said the cheddar is a "sibling, not identical twin" of its frozen mac and cheese, while the three-cheese option is a "cousin."

BurgerFi filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, less than a month after it warned investors it had "substantial doubt" about its ability to operate. The company joins the growing list of restaurant chains that have resorted to bankruptcy to turn around their businesses, from Red Lobster to Buca di Beppo. Broadly, the restaurant industry has seen chains, independents and franchisees alike struggle with declining traffic and high interest rates. BurgerFi has assets of $50 million to $75 million and total debts of $100 million to $500 million, according to a bankruptcy filing. For the quarter ended April 1, BurgerFi reported revenue of $42.9 million and a net loss of $6.5 million.

"This is our plan for the U.S., and where I need to focus my time initially," Niccol wrote in the letter. Later, Niccol plans to address its international business, like China, its second-largest market. The Securities and Exchange Commission has charged Keurig Dr Pepper for making inaccurate claims about the recyclability of its disposable K-Cup pods, the agency said Tuesday. As consumers have become more conscious of their carbon footprints, questions about K-Cups' environmental impact have dogged Keurig for more than a decade. The pods' inventor told the Atlantic that he feels bad "sometimes" about creating K-Cups because of the waste they generate. A 2018 lawsuit over recycling claims led to a $10 million class-action settlement. The company's claims could have swayed some consumers, boosting sales of both K-Cups and its brewers.

Beyond Meat will introduce a whole-muscle steak alternative as part of its pivot to win over health-conscious consumers. In recent months, Brown has blamed some of the plant-based meat industry's woes on misinformation from the meat industry and cattle farmers, such as skepticism about plant-based meat's processing. Beyond already sells plant-based steak tips, but the new product mimics the texture of a filet with mycelium, the rootlike part of fungi. Brown envisions the steak alternative as a substitute for chicken, topping salads and stuffing burritos as a source of protein. The new products have short ingredients lists, in the hopes of winning over customers who previously thought plant-based meat was too processed.

Starbucks announced Tuesday it's replacing CEO Laxman Narasimhan with Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol as the coffee chain tries to reverse a sales slump. Before joining Starbucks, Narasimhan was chief executive of Reckitt, which owns brands like Lysol and Mucinex. Narasimhan's surprise ouster also suggests that Starbucks' board isn't interested in a deal with activist investors. When news of Elliott's stake in Starbucks first broke in July, the hedge fund offered Starbucks' board a settlement that would protect Narasimhan's job, CNBC previously reported. Starbucks' board did not initially respond or engage with Elliott for some time, driven in part by the lingering influence of Schultz.
