WASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - The Pentagon holds a strategic U.S. stockpile for germanium but currently has no inventory reserves for gallium, a spokesperson said on Thursday, after China announced export restrictions on the two metals used in semiconductors. "The (Defense) Department is proactively taking steps using Defense Production Act Title III authorities to increase domestic mining and processing of critical materials for the microelectronics and space supply chain, including gallium and germanium," the spokesperson said. Germanium is used in high-speed computer chips, plastics and military applications such as night-vision devices, as well as satellite imagery sensors. Gallium is used in radar and radio communication devices, satellites and LEDs. While major defense contractors like Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) may not buy gallium and germanium directly, they likely purchase semiconductors from suppliers who source Chinese gallium and germanium, said Arun Seraphin, executive director for the National Defense Industrial Association’s Emerging Technologies Institute.

Acest sistem antirachetă, devenit operațional în 2011, reprezintă însă doar unul dintre cele trei „straturi” ale scutului antirachetă al Israelului. Una dintre cele mai răspândite rachete Hamas cu rază scurtă de acțiune (circa 10 km) este Qassam. Procesul de interceptare a rachetelor de către Iron Dome este cvasi-automatizat: în momentul când un astfel de proiectil apare pe radarele Iron Dome, unitatea de comandă a bateriei analizează traiectoria proiectilului și „decide” dacă ținta „merită” să fie interceptată. Până acum, Iron Dome și-a dovedit eficiența în interceptarea proiectilelor Hamas. Astfel, recentele atacuri ale Hamas pot fi privite, conform Forbes, și ca o tentativă a palestinienilor de a testa eventualele slăbiciuni ale Iron Dome și de a afla nivelul acestui prag de saturație.

Presa internațională scrie că „peste o mie de rachete au fost trase, în ultimele zile, asupra Israelului, iar 90% dintre acestea au fost interceptate de sistemul Iron Dome”. Pus în funcțiune pentru prima dată în anul 2011, este conceput pentru a opri rachete și artilerii cu rază scurtă de acțiune, precum cele trase din Gaza. Două sisteme separate, cunoscute sub numele de „Praștia lui David” și „Săgeata”, sunt proiectate pentru amenințări cu rază medie și lungă de acțiune, inclusiv avioane, drone, rachete și rachete. Braţul armat al Hamas susține că a lansat 130 de rachete, marți seara, în direcţia Tel Aviv-ului. Ore în șir s-a auzit zgomotul sirenelor și sunetul interceptoarelor antirachetă. Iron Dome se bazează pe un sistem de analiză radar pentru a depista o amenințare. Ei lovesc racheta în aer și produc o explozie care se vede ca o lumină pe cer, în momentul impactului.
