June 27 (Reuters) - Accor (ACCP.PA) plans to open more than 1,200 hotels in the next five years, increasing the number of its resorts by more than one-fifth, Europe's biggest hotel group said on Tuesday. Accor also raised its outlook at its capital markets day, forecasting its 2023 revenue per room (RevPAR) to grow by 15% to 20% amid reorganisation plans that were implemented in January. Accor said it plans to return around 3 billion euros to shareholders in that period via dividends and share buybacks. "We expect a positive share price performance today and we will probably upgrade our recommendation on Accor as the updated mid-term guidance is stronger than expected," said analyst Yi Zhong at AlphaValue. Big U.S. firms adopt cautious tone on China recovery
  + stars: | 2023-05-10 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
In April, China's imports contracted sharply, underscoring signs of weak domestic demand as a battered property market, worries over job stability and global economic uncertainty kept shoppers wary. "We grew mid-single digits in China, which had previously been a double-digit growth market for us pre-pandemic. "Consumer confidence remains weak and shaken because many Chinese faced job and salary cuts in 2022 and Chinese New Year bonuses in 2023 were low," said Shaun Rein, managing director at China Market Research Group. Still, a rapid recovery in domestic travel demand propped up sales at hotels. "China will be a growth driver for many multi-national companies but will not be at the high growth rates many analysts predict," China Market Research's Rein said.

Morgan Stanley predicted that European companies will beat market expectations for first-quarter earnings, citing the better-than-expected macro figures of the last few months. Strategists at the bank warned that these factors could lead to downgrades later in the year, alongside a 10% fall in full-year earnings per share. The table below shows five stocks highlighted by Morgan Stanley, where its analysts have a "high conviction" in results. The investment bank said Saint-Gobain isn't expected to beat market expectations when it reports first-quarter results on Apr. Morgan Stanley is also bullish toward London-listed Whitbread ahead of its full-year results on Apr.
That could mark a significant change in the international travel market, to which Chinese tourists are outsized contributors. In the first half of that year alone, their outbound travel spend surpassed $127.5 billion, a study from Chinese travel booking site Ctrip.com found. Chinese outbound travel is forecast to recover around two-thirds of its pre-pandemic levels in 2023. Leopatrizi | E+ | Getty ImagesBecause of those shortcomings, countries that can accommodate Chinese travelers' shifting needs have emerged as clear winners. Thailand, for instance, offers visas-on-arrival to fully vaccinated Chinese tourists who have travel insurance.
Gérard Pélisson helped build one of the world’s largest hotel companies in Accor SA. Gérard Pélisson bet on an untested business idea for hotels in Europe and picked the right partner for it. Mr. Pélisson gave up a career as an executive at International Business Machines Corp. in the 1960s to start a hotel company with Paul Dubrule, who had taken notice of successful hotel chains like Holiday Inn while working in the U.S. Mr. Dubrule convinced Mr. Pélisson that similar hotels could work in France and elsewhere in Europe, too. Mr. Pélisson mostly focused on the financing for the project and Mr. Dubrule devised the marketing plans. They opened their first Novotel hotel in northern France four years later in 1967.
Inflation and higher living costs may be weighing on consumers' wallets, but there's one area where many are unwilling to cut back: their desire to travel. The number of people willing to fork out more on travel could be even higher, as costs rise.
