A Russian pilot defected to Ukraine with an Mi-8 helicopter and fighter jet parts this week. Ukraine offers monetary rewards to Russian soldiers who bring their equipment to Ukraine. AdvertisementAdvertisementUkraine has sought to incentivize Russian soldiers to defect since the war began in February 2022, launching at least two programs targeted at would-be turncoats. A helicopter — like the one a Russian pilot flew into Ukraine this week — fetches $500,000, according to the legislation. The Rada bill also promises "secrecy, a safe stay in Ukraine, and support in obtaining new documents and leaving for a third country," for any Russian soldiers who abandon post.

The July indictment accused Mr. Trump, Mr. De Oliveira and Mr. Nauta of trying to delete Mar-a-Lago security footage. The government had requested a trial date in December, while Mr. Trump’s lawyers asked for an indefinite postponement. Once he was sworn in as president, Mr. Trump reimbursed Mr. Cohen. The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee opened an investigation into the work of the Atlanta prosecutor who has criminally charged Donald Trump and others with interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Trump is due to surrender at an Atlanta jail on Thursday evening to be booked in the case. Eighteen other people, including lawyers who promoted false claims about the 2020 election, also were indicted in the case. Traditionally, the committee's jurisdiction is limited to oversight of federal courts and federal officials. The House Judiciary Committee earlier this year demanded similar information from the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr., who is prosecuting Trump in another criminal case.

"The federal government has a substantial interest in the welfare of former presidents," Jordan wrote in a five-page letter to Willis. "And because this former president is a current candidate for that office, the indictment implicates another core federal interest: a presidential election," Jordan said. The House investigation was disclosed three days after Trump accused Willis on his social media platform of "continuing to campaign, and raise money on, this WITCH HUNT. In the case brought by Willis, Trump was accused of unlawfully pressuring Georgia state officials to reverse his 2020 election loss to Biden in the state. House Republicans have sought to defend Trump in the four cases by alleging that the U.S. justice system has been "weaponized" against him by Biden.

“Turning first to the question of motivation, it is noteworthy that just four days before this indictment, you launched a new campaign fund-raising website that highlighted your investigation into President Trump,” he wrote. A review of budget documents indicates that most of the office’s funding comes from local government, though prosecutors’ offices often receive at least some federal grant money. It was the latest example of House Republicans allied with Mr. Trump using their power in Congress to try to derail efforts to prosecute him. Mr. Jordan has recommended House Republicans “eliminate any funding for the F.B.I. Mr. Trump now faces 91 felony charges across the four criminal cases against him.

Companies Tesla Inc FollowBERLIN, Aug 23 (Reuters) - Tesla (TSLA.O) lowered the production target of its German plant to 4,350 a week in July and August after hitting 5,000 a week in March, and plans to reduce it further, according to a Business Insider report citing internal documents and anonymous sources. Business Insider said pictures showing Tesla's internal workflow software indicated that the U.S. EV maker had lowered its target for July and August to 870 cars per day. The internal target had since been adjusted further down to 750 cars per day, amounting to less than 4,000 a week, the article said, citing unnamed workers at the plant. Business Insider said the company did not comment on a series of questions on the plant's output. Output hit 4,000 cars per week in late February, ahead of a production schedule seen by Reuters, but appears to have slowed down since then, according to the Business Insider report.

China is dominant in magnets and the rare earth metals they are made from. Magnet makers are also drawn to Vietnam by low labour costs and market access afforded by multiple free-trade deals. It said it sources most of its rare earths from China but is seeking alternative sources in Vietnam and Australia and plans to develop a processing facility in Vietnam. A similar request from clients prompted another Chinese magnet maker, Magsound, to decide to open a factory in Vietnam in the first half of next year, the two people said. In April, Australia's Strategic Materials (ASM.AX) signed a deal with a Vietnamese refiner that committed to supplying rare earths for export to South Korea.

I'll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED by a Radical Left District Attorney, Fani Willis," Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who launched the investigation into Trump and his allies, has given the defendants until noon Friday to voluntarily surrender. Trump earlier Monday agreed to a $200,000 bond in the Georgia criminal case charging him with trying to illegally overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state. Eastman — who's referenced but not charged as a co-conspirator in special counsel Jack Smith's federal criminal case against Trump for allegedly trying to subvert the 2020 election results — features prominently and repeatedly in the DA's indictment. Ray Smith, another Trump lawyer who was allegedly involved in the electors scheme, agreed to a $50,000 bond order, court filings show.

Ukrainian soldiers have speculated that Russian troops are fighting while high on amphetamines. Nazi troops were given methamphetamines during World War II to decrease fear and increase aggression. Germany even organized a rehab program for "overflown" pilots, or those who were addicted to the drug, Ohler said. The Russian military gave its soldiers vodka rations to get through World War II; France opted for red wine; and alcohol remained the "number one" drug for Germans during the war, Ohler said. "I would be surprised if drugs were not being used in the Ukrainian-Russian war," Ohler said.

Now the news agency is the first to detail how Mexican drug gangs have harnessed legitimate remittance networks to repatriate their U.S. drug profits, and the factors that make this activity so difficult for authorities to detect and thwart. But authorities say Mexican drug cartels are piggybacking on this legal network to repatriate earnings from U.S. narcotics sales. A Reuters search of Mexican court records dating back to 2012 turned up no cases involving money laundering through remittances. Still, prosecutors in those cases mentioned several of those firms in court documents because they said the defendants had used their platforms to wire drug money. His office did not respond to requests for comment about law enforcement allegations that Mexican cartels are using remittances to launder drug money.

The image of Mr. Meadows somewhere surreal and incorrect, and only partially visible, is a fitting one. And in the audio where Mr. Trump jokes about classified documents and ruffles papers around, he’s reportedly talking to Mr. Meadows’s ghost writer. Then, later in the day, he contradicted his remark to say that Mr. Trump was “doing very well.”Why did he do any of this? At the time, the writer Tim Alberta noted various theories: Was Mr. Trump actually in bad shape inside the hospital, and Mr. Meadows thought people should know? Was Mr. Meadows overwhelmed?

If the proposed trial date is accepted, Trump will begin his trial in the Georgia case when the Republican presidential nominating process is well underway. Several states will already have held their nominating contests, including the traditional early states of Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. Super Tuesday, when voters in more than a dozen states, including California and Texas, will go to the polls, takes place on March 5, 2024. The filing indicates Willis is seeking to quickly initiate the process of sharing discovery with all 19 defendants and wants to keep her word to hold a trial within six months. The best way to think about Georgia’s sprawling indictment against Donald Trump and his allies is that it is a case about lies. But it also answers two related questions: Why bring yet another case against Trump in yet another jurisdiction? The answers lie in the distinctions between state and federal law. Georgia law is in many ways both more broad and more focused than the federal statutes at issue in Smith’s case against Trump. Yet it’s the focus of Georgia law that’s truly dangerous to Trump.

Russian forces looking for military supplies raided a Ukraine-bound cargo ship in the Black Sea. The video shows a Russian inspecting blurred-out documents and ends with someone from the inspection team thanking the ship's crew. Tensions in the Black Sea have been especially high since Russia spiked the grain deal, a decision that was met with harsh criticism from the West. In the midst of these challenges, Ukraine has made increasing use of sea drones to attack important Russian targets operating in the Black Sea. The recent raid, however, is a notable move for Russia's Black Sea Fleet, one which raises the risk to commercial vessels transiting the region.
