Almost as soon as Trump left Atlanta after surrendering at the Fulton County jail Thursday, his team began to monetize his mug shot. Meadows to provide first major test of Georgia caseThe hearing in Georgia that could yield major revelations does not involve Trump directly, but rather Meadows. Meadows and Trump are among 19 co-defendants in a vast racketeering case built by Willis. Extensive pre-trial litigation in the Georgia case could also end up frustrating attempts by Willis, who initially sought a March 2024 trial date, to bring the case before the 2024 election. Trump’s attorneys are also arguing that Smith’s proposed timeline for the trial would conflict with other criminal and civil cases in which the former president is embroiled.

Ron DeSantis passed up an opportunity to name one reason voters should pick him over Donald Trump. At an event at J&J Ag Solutions, an "average voter" named Ethan Masters asked DeSantis, "So what's your biggest selling point when I'm in the voting stage and it's between you and Trump?" He'd be a lame duck on Day 1 even if he could get elected," DeSantis said. Trump leads DeSantis by nearly 40 points in most recent polls of GOP candidates. Representatives for DeSantis and Trump did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, sent outside regular business hours.

Karl Rove called out Vivek Ramaswamy over what he said was a "robotic" GOP debate performance. "Chris Christie got off one of the better lines of the night that he sounded like ChatGPT," he said. While Rove said Ramaswamy "on points had a good evening," he also said that the candidate "had a bad evening" when it came to substance. Ron DeSantis of Florida, who has so far been unable to dethrone former President Donald Trump from the top of the GOP presidential perch, had "a good night" at the debate. Chris Christie to understand what happens when a Republican candidate is highly critical of the former president. His net favorability rating in the latest Quinnipiac University poll stands at minus-44 points among Republicans. Those with an opinion viewed him unfavorably by more than a 3-to-1 ratio (26% unfavorable to 8% favorable, a net favorability rating of minus-18 points). Among those who have, Hurd has a similar net favorability ratio to Hutchinson’s – 4% viewed him favorably and 11% unfavorably. This leaves Trump’s GOP rivals with a conundrum that even Harry Houdini would find difficult to solve: how to eat away at Trump’s support without being seen as trying to bring him down.

That’s the true mark of a real milestone on this campaign,” Ramaswamy joked. For many voters in Iowa, the debate was their introduction to the 38-year-old candidate. A survey of potential Republican primary voters who watched the debate conducted by The Washington Post, FiveThirtyEight and Ipsos showed 26% of voters thought Ramaswamy won the debate, second highest behind DeSantis. Still, the Ramaswamy campaign said it raised $600,000 in the day after the debate, the largest single-day total since its launch. All offer a much safer future than the alternative. Ms. Haley said, accurately, that passing a national abortion ban at 15 weeks is politically off the table, since it would require 60 votes in the Senate. She has argued this before, but many Republicans might be hearing it for the first time.

Hand-raising is a juvenile and reductive exercise in any political debate, but it’s worth unpacking this moment, which provides clarity into the damage that Mr. Trump has inflicted on his own party. But even Nikki Haley, though she generally tried to position herself as a reasonable alternative to Mr. Ramaswamy’s earsplitting drivel, raised her hand. Only Chris Christie and Asa Hutchinson demonstrated some respect for the rule of law by opposing the election of a criminal. Mr. Hutchinson said Mr. Trump was “morally disqualified” from being president because of what happened on Jan. 6, and made the interesting argument that he may also be legally disqualified under the 14th Amendment for inciting an insurrection. Mr. Christie said the country had to stop “normalizing” Mr. Trump’s conduct, which he said was beneath the office of president.

The raucous two-hour debate offered a view of the deep challenges the contenders face in seeking to dislodge Trump from his perch at the top of the field. The debate took place a day before Trump planned to surrender in Atlanta to face charges he sought to overturn his election loss in the state. That led to a sharp back-and-forth between Christie, Trump's biggest critic among Republican candidates, and Ramaswamy, Trump's most ardent defender. In the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll released this month, Trump held 47% of the Republican vote nationally, with DeSantis dropping six percentage points from July to 13%. Moderators Martha MacCallum and Bret Baier, both Fox News hosts, started the debate by asking about the U.S. economy.

CNN —If Vladimir Putin was watching the Republican presidential debate on Wednesday night, he would have found one more reason to dig in for a long war of attrition in Ukraine. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy acted as Trump’s stand-in, mining a deep seam of skepticism over the war among GOP grassroots voters. Chris Christie, who recently returned from Ukraine, warned: “This is the Vladimir Putin, who Donald Trump called brilliant and a genius. The debate underscored one of the tragedies of the war for Ukraine. They can’t control what Putin does, which means their fate will also be on the ballot in the US in 2024.

Vivek Ramaswamy, the candidate who has clung closest to the front-runner, immediately raised his hand in the affirmative. He was followed quickly by Nikki Haley, who served as Mr. Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations; Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, who helped Mr. Trump weather accusations of racism; and Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, once seen as the most formidable challenger to Mr. Trump, looked to his left, looked to his right and then raised his hand — after the four others had done so. Mike Pence, Mr. Trump’s vice president, then lifted his, clearly reluctantly. Another Trump critic, Asa Hutchinson, the former governor of Arkansas, kept his hands locked at his sides.

The candidates were clashing and the Milwaukee crowd was getting rowdy. After an hour of policy discussion, the first Republican primary debate of 2023 had turned chaotic when the Fox News moderators brought up “the elephant not in the room.”Donald J. Trump was not onstage on Wednesday, but the mere mention of his name created fireworks. Chris Christie, the former New Jersey governor, urged Republicans “to stop normalizing” the former president’s conduct. His rival Vivek Ramaswamy responded that Mr. Trump was “the best president of the 21st century.” A sleepy debate had yielded to a gloves-off battle over the future of the Republican Party. As the audience drowned out Mr. Christie with boos, Bret Baier, one of the moderators, paused and turned in his chair.

“He asked me to put him over the Constitution, and I chose the Constitution,” Pence said. That was an instruction to turn away from Trump. Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was the breakout star of the first GOP debate on Wednesday. According to a series of polls taken by the Washington Post/FiveThirtyEight/Ipsos in the lead up to the first Republican presidential debate, 13% of Republican primary voters had an "unfavorable" view of Ramaswamy before he took the stage. After the debate, the poll found, 26% of potential primary voters who watched the debate rated Ramaswamy the winner, behind only DeSantis. Throughout the debate, Ramaswamy jumped in as often as he could, seizing the second-largest portion of speaking time, according to the New York Times. The other candidates, however, didn't let Ramaswamy simply get away with his repeated attacks on the debate stage.

Welcome to Opinion’s commentary for the first Republican presidential primary candidate debate, held in Milwaukee on Wednesday night. Gail Collins: She seemed generally reasonable and wow, when the debate turned to education and she actually brought up reading. If there’s any life left in the old G.O.P., Haley gave it hope. Perhaps more important, in taking on the glib and callow Ramaswamy on Ukraine, she showed anger and dominance, essential qualities in a Republican debate. Any debate that doesn’t feature Chris Christie at the front of the highlight reel is a bad night for Christie.

Republican hopefuls’ deficit goals are all talk

Participants in the party’s first debate for the 2024 election on Wednesday night promised to shrink the government’s budget shortfall. Yet Republicans have a bad track record for cutting federal debt, and some candidates are already touting pricey projects and tax cuts. The last Republican president to run a budget surplus was George W. Bush in 2001, but even that year was partly influenced by the cost-cutting measures put in place by his Democratic predecessor. With Congress balking at such a combinations, Republican candidates’ plans are all talk, little hope of action. That budget deficit is 122% larger than the shortfall seen in the same period last year.

Yet the former president’s absence created an opening, if an illusory one, for a broader array of conservative positions. Republicans have long discussed the far-off notion of what Trumpism without Mr. Trump would look like. Since his rise eight years ago, Mr. Trump has sucked the oxygen out of Republican gatherings, from the halls of Congress to the fairgrounds of Iowa. The manufactured environment of the debate seemed to remind Republicans what it was like to breathe, politically speaking, in Trumpless rooms. Former Vice President Mike Pence supported a federal ban.
