They're trying to figure out what to do. They're trying to figure out what to do. Thanks to muscle memory from the tariffs Trump imposed in 2018, he says, many businesses are speeding up their shipping schedules — racing to get as many goods as possible into the country before any new tariffs are implemented. So did dryers, even though they weren't subject to tariffs — companies figured customers would assume that two related products were subject to the same inflationary forces. So spare a thought for one of these faraway places affected by your vote: my island home, Taiwan. He grew up in an era when, with the United States as a beacon, Taiwan transformed from dictatorship to democracy. He has made clear that, unlike previous presidents, he couldn’t care less about Taiwan and our hard-won democracy. A handful of Democrats are sounding their approval of Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State but others continue to doubt some cabinet picks made by President-elect Donald Trump. Democratic Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said she has "a friendship" with Rubio and said she's looking forward to talking to him about his policies. Another name that has drawn substantial criticism from the Senate is former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's candidate for Director of National Intelligence. Sen. Duckworth alleged that Gabbard is "compromised," and she worries that the former congresswoman couldn't pass a background check. It's a slur, quite frankly," Republican Sen. Investors should be wary of the impacts several companies may bear from the cost-cutting goals of President-elect Donald Trump's Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, according to TD Cowen. "The announcement of DOGE has led to concerns about future revenue and profitability of USG [United States government] contractors," analyst Roman Schweizer said in a Friday note to clients. "It is too early to estimate potential negative impacts to USG contractors given the limited results of prior USG reforms, but cuts are possible and there will be uncertainty for several months." In an effort to find companies that have the most at stake under potential DOGE actions, TD Cowen identified the publicly traded government contractors with the highest amount of dollars obligated in fiscal year 2023, both overall and by individual federal department. Pharmaceutical giants such as Merck , Humana and Pfizer could also be impacted by potential DOGE cuts, as the firm found they receive large sums of money primarily through contracts with the Department of Health & Human Services.

London CNN —Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over three bases used by the United States Air Force in Britain, the two countries have confirmed. The objects were seen between Wednesday and Saturday flying over the Royal Air Force’s Lakenheath, Mildenhall and Feltwell bases, all used by the US Air Force (USAF). “The number of (unmanned aircraft systems) fluctuated and they ranged in size/configuration,” a spokesperson for the US Air Forces in Europe said in a statement. The three bases are located within a few miles of each other in eastern England. In 2017, a car attempted to ram the entrance to the Mildenhall base, resulting in shots being fired by US personnel and the base being briefly locked down.

Hollywood was back this weekend to where it desperately hungers to be — at the center of global culture. Women flocked to the PG-rated “Wicked,” a lavish adaptation of Act One of the popular Broadway musical, while men supported “Gladiator II,” an R-rated sequel 24 years in the making. Together, the two big-budget movies were on pace to sell roughly $380 million in tickets worldwide, bringing the box office back to life after months of audience indifference. That sum would make “Wicked” the third-highest opener for the year, behind $211 million for “Deadpool & Wolverine” and $154 million for “Inside Out 2.” (Overseas, “Wicked” was expected to collect an additional $48 million.) Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” was on pace to collect about $60 million in North America, including previews, for a worldwide total since arriving in overseas release earlier this month of about $225 million.

A wildfire in southwestern Massachusetts grew to 1,000 acres this week, the second fire in the region to reach that size this month. As droughts and heat intensify, the risk of wildfires like these becoming catastrophic is growing across the United States. But after generations of suppressing fire, many millions of acres of brush and tree fuels have built up, increasing the risk of large, dangerous wildfires. Prescribed-burn associations — neighbors helping neighbors burn — are addressing some of these issues by pooling community members’ resources, experience and time. In an era of greater wildfire risk driven by fuel accumulation and global warming, governments should be swiftly removing barriers to the use of prescribed fires on private land.

TSMC produces an estimated 90% of the world's advanced chips, which power everything from iPhones to cars. While TSMC's Phoenix factories are expected to boost semiconductor chip production in the US, the company isn't making its most advanced chips stateside, industry experts told Business Insider. For example, chips produced using 4 nanometer (nm) technology are expected to be made in the first Phoenix factory, while TSMC's Taiwan factories are already producing chips using 3nm technology.
