In the occupied regions, early voting kicked off last week as election officials went door to door or set up makeshift polling stations in public places to attract passersby. As a result, Moscow has maintained control of about 70% of the Kherson region. “It looks like the Russian authorities know the result (of the election) already,” Fyodorov said. WASHINGTON (AP) — A jury began weighing contempt of Congress charges against Trump White House official Peter Navarro on Thursday over his failure to cooperate with a subpoena from the committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. A defense attorney argued Navarro didn’t purposely ignore the House Jan. 6 Committee. A judge has ruled the executive privilege argument isn’t a defense against the charges, finding Navarro couldn’t show that Trump had invoked it. Navarro was the second Trump aide to face contempt of Congress charges after former White House adviser Steve Bannon. Trump now faces a federal indictment in Washington, D.C., and a state indictment in Georgia over his efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss.

CNN —A federal jury in Washington, DC, has begun deliberating the criminal contempt of Congress charges against former Trump White House trade adviser Peter Navarro. He is the second ex-aide to former President Donald Trump to be prosecuted for his lack of cooperation with the committee. Prosecutors told the jury during closing arguments Thursday that Navarro “made a choice” not to comply with a February 2022 subpoena. Quick moving trial with limited defenseNavarro joined the Trump White House to advise on trade and became a well-known face of the Trump administration, while earning a reputation for sparring behind the scenes with his White House colleagues. Peter Navarro, an advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, speaks to reporters as he arrives at the E. Barrett Prettyman Courthouse on September 7, 2023 in Washington, DC. A jury on Thursday convicted former Trump White House trade advisor Peter Navarro of two counts of criminal contempt of Congress. Navarro faces up to a year in prison, and U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta scheduled his sentencing for January 12. Woodward argued that prosecutors had failed to give evidence of where Navarro was physically at the time he was due to appear before the select House committee. Another former top Trump White House aide, Steve Bannon, was convicted last year of two counts of contempt of Congress for failing to comply with subpoenas issued by the House committee.

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, left, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis ReutersFulton County District Attorney Fani Willis tore into House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan on Thursday in a searing letter accusing the Ohio Republican of trying to obstruct her criminal prosecution of former President Donald Trump. "There is no justification in the Constitution for Congress to interfere with a state criminal matter, as you attempt to do," Willis wrote in the nine-page retort to Jordan, whose committee last month launched a probe into the district attorney's prosecution of Trump. Trump and his 18 co-defendants in the sprawling racketeering case have pleaded not guilty. Willis on Thursday fired back that Jordan's letter "contains inaccurate information and misleading statements." She wrote that "settled constitutional law clearly permits me to ignore your unjustified and illegal intrusion into an open state criminal prosecution" before launching into a multipage diatribe accusing Jordan of holding Trump to a lower standard of justice than any other defendant.

CNN —Special counsel David Weiss intends to seek an indictment against President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, relating to gun charges by the end of the month, the Justice Department said Wednesday. However, after his plea deal to resolve two tax charges fell apart in court, the future of the gun deal has been in limbo. Hunter Biden’s gun-related legal troubles relate to a firearm he purchased in October 2018. In addition to the gun case, Weiss is still weighing whether to charge Hunter Biden with tax crimes. Hunter Biden’s tax-related legal jeopardy emerged after he repeatedly missed IRS deadlines to pay his taxes on time.

In 26 days, Trump, his sons, and his real-estate empire are scheduled in a civil fraud trial in New York. On Wednesday, a judge rejected Trump's bid to delay the trial as "completely without merit." The decision follows legal filings in which New York's attorney general seeks to fine Trump and his co-defendants $10,000 each for trying to delay the trial through "frivolous conduct." A Manhattan judge's handwritten response to Donald Trump's latest bid to delay his October 2, 2023, civil business-fraud trial. His decisions on the attorney general's request for $10,000 sanctions, and for at least a partial trial victory, are pending.

CNN —Former White House trade adviser Peter Navarro goes on trial Tuesday as the second ex-aide to former President Donald Trump to be prosecuted for criminal contempt of Congress. With the judge finding that Trump did not make a formal invocation of privilege, Navarro will be severely limited in the defenses he can put in front of the jury. It declined to prosecute former Trump White House officials Mark Meadows and Dan Scavino, who were also subpoenaed by the committee and referred by the House to the Justice Department for contempt. Navarro told reporters outside the courthouse last week that his legal bills, including appeals of the case, would exceed $1 million. This is the same suit I wore in 2017 going into the White House,” he said.

CNN —There are two Republican primaries as an election season that defies conventional metrics and campaign trail traditions crashes into its fall stretch. Trump has already convinced millions of his supporters that he is the current legitimate president after his false claims of fraud in the 2020 election. Many of the candidates in the second tier appear to be running for the nomination of a Republican Party that may not even exist anymore. Given these numbers, why would Trump drop his boycott and attend the second GOP presidential debate at the Ronald Reagan library in California later this month? “We need to narrow it down to find a leader who can get the Republican Party back on the right track and that could get us back to winning elections again,” Hogan said.

The Russian pilot who defected to Ukraine with a Mi-8 helicopter spoke publicly for the first time. The Ukrainian defense agency identified the pilot as Maksym Kuzminov, a 28-year-old former captain in Russia's 319th separate helicopter regiment. The defense intelligence on Sunday published a documentary on YouTube called "Downed Russian Pilots" that details the defection plot. The pilot said he coordinated with Ukrainian military intelligence, which was able to create the circumstances for his safe defection. "What is happening now is simply genocide of the Ukrainian people: both Ukrainian and Russian," Kuzminov said.

For weeks after the 2020 election had been called, Peter Navarro, a White House adviser to President Donald J. Trump, worked closely with other senior aides to keep Mr. Trump in power for a second term. After being subpoenaed last year by the House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot, which sought to learn more about those efforts, Mr. Navarro refused to comply, insisting that Mr. Trump had directed him not to cooperate and dismissing the subpoena as “illegal” and “unenforceable.”Now, after more than a year of legal wrangling, Mr. Navarro, 74, will defend those claims in a trial that starts Tuesday, when jury selection is expected to begin in Federal District Court in Washington. The case centers on a relatively simple question: whether he showed contempt for Congress in defying the House committee’s request for documents and testimony. The trial itself may be relatively short, and if Mr. Navarro were to be convicted on the two counts of contempt of Congress he is charged with, he could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $100,000 for each count.

But according to some industry experts, it’s not too early to start thinking about – and perhaps even booking – next year’s trip. But Keyes generally advises travelers not to necessarily hit that purchase button as soon as an airline opens up a flight for booking. “While it’s relatively common knowledge that last-minute fares are expensive, what’s far less known is that it’s also possible to book flights too early,” he says. From the hospitality industry perspective, advance booking can help hoteliers and other businesses adjust staffing, pricing and other factors to offer a better experience. While Cabutti of JW Marriott Venice Resort & Spa acknowledges that “the early booking trend results in higher room rates,” it also enables businesses to better meet guests’ needs.

CNN —It turns out that there is a heavy price for trying to steal votes, defaming defenseless election workers and invading the US Capitol to try to thwart a democratic transfer of presidential power. A lawyer for the two election workers vowed on CNN to pursue accountability “to the end of the Earth” in a damages trial. While Trump claims such cases are an example of a “witch hunt,” the judicial process is grinding slowly on. Yet no democracy would last long if it failed to respond to the alleged crimes committed by Trump and his acolytes after the 2020 election. Michael Gottlieb, an attorney for the election workers, said he expected that his clients would see restitution after a trial date for damages between November and February.

Howell blasted Giuliani for "willful ... misconduct," and "slippery" statements in failing to turn over the requested information as part of the legal process known as discovery. A federal judge on Wednesday issued a default judgment against former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and ordered him to pay sanctions of nearly $133,000 in a civil conspiracy lawsuit by two Georgia election workers he had claimed mishandled ballots in the 2020 presidential contest. The women had sued Giuliani in 2021 with claims of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and civil conspiracy. The two cases, stemming from the efforts of Mr. Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election, rely on many of the same facts, documents and witnesses. But as Monday’s court skirmishes demonstrated, the approaches of the two prosecutors in charge of the investigations — Jack Smith, the Justice Department’s special counsel, and Fani T. Willis, the district attorney in Fulton County — could not be more different. Mr. Smith took over the two federal Trump investigations with a promise to move rapidly in hopes of wrapping up legal proceedings before the 2024 election, and the indictment handed down against Mr. Trump on Aug. 1 included just four counts. While it referred to six unindicted co-conspirators, only Mr. Trump was charged. By contrast, the indictment brought by Ms. Willis includes 41 counts against the former president and encompassed allegations against his long roster of co-defendants.

Don't expect any change, Biden advisers say, until after decisions are handed down in those trials. However, sustaining that strategy, during the most contentious and consequential judicial actions in U.S. presidential history, will be severely tested in the coming months, political strategists say. Expect Trump to use a series of criminal trials from New York City to Georgia and Florida in the months ahead to fuel a campaign deeply rooted in grievance politics. The White House and the reelection campaign are content to use the upcoming months - when Republicans are embroiled in a nasty nominating race - to pitch Americans on the success of Biden's economic policies, interviews show. Instead, the reelection campaign will try to draw attention to differences between the two candidates, officials say.
