Whatever you imagined, that hiker is probably using the app AllTrails. Even people who don’t know what a CamelBak is or who have no idea what the term “out-and-back” means. In the world of AllTrails, a hiker of any skill level is still a hiker. Many of them find the app in the same way. “It’s a free app, so we were like, ‘We’ll download it and see what happens.’ We never deleted it.”

Actor and comedian Mindy Kaling hosted the program, which ended at around 10 p.m., and late night host Stephen Colbert moderated a conversation with Biden, Clinton and Obama. Colbert acknowledged one protester and asked Biden about the U.S. role in ensuring a peaceful and prosperous future for both Israelis and Palestinians. Outside the New York venue Thursday, more than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters chanted slogans like "Biden, Biden, you're a liar," and waved Palestinian flags and signs with anti-war messages. Biden and Trump are polling neck-and-neck, with 46% of voters supporting Trump and 45% supporting Biden, according to a March poll by CNBC. During Thursday's moderated discussion, Colbert asked Clinton what he would say to voters who do not feel like the economy is strong.

Unlike Obama and Clinton before him, Biden is running against a candidate only a few years his junior. It was a twist on how Clinton answered a question about Dole's age during the second presidential debate in 1996. There is not much precedent for the event Biden's campaign is putting on Thursday. Obama, Biden and Clinton will inevitably go down memory lane during a discussion moderated by comedian Stephen Colbert. Aside from private conversations, Biden also often directs his top aides to follow up with Obama or Clinton on various topics of conversation.

Read previewThe collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday is a reminder that the economy remains vulnerable to sudden supply-chain shocks, experts say. Here's how the catastrophe could affect the economy, trade, and the city of Baltimore. "This event will have greater economic implications for the Baltimore economy than nationally," Oxford Economics' chief US economist Ryan Sweet said on Tuesday in a research note. The container ship Dali collided with a key bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday. The port of Baltimore is the busiest for "roll-on/roll-off" cargo, which includes cars, light trucks, and agricultural and construction equipment.

Until my son was seven, I was a single mom. As a teacher, I once had a student say they had "mad respect" for me when they found out that I was a single mom, and that's because the majority of people realize that being a single mom isn't easy. But now that I have that and I've been remarried for a couple of years, I actually miss my life as a single mom. If I could go back to my single mom days, I would appreciate the time more. For that, I wouldn't trade having been a single mom for anything.

The ship that struck a key bridge on Tuesday was reported to have an issue with its propulsion in June. The Dali lost propulsion on Tuesday, but it's unclear if this was related to the June issue. AdvertisementThe 984-foot container vessel that lost power and crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday had issues with its propulsion system just months before, records show. AdvertisementClay Diamond, the executive director of the American Pilots' Association, told The Washington Post that the Dali lost power at around 1:20 a.m., around eight minutes before the crash. AdvertisementThe Francis Scott Key Bridge was Baltimore's biggest bridge, and the loss of such critical infrastructure will likely cause supply chain issues across multiple industries.

Why Palm Oil Is Still a Big Problem
  + stars: | 2024-03-26 | by ( Manuela Andreoni | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Palm oil — the ubiquitous ingredient for all things spreadable, from toothpaste to ice cream — is now the commodity consumed by Americans that contributes most to the loss of tropical forests. Researchers looked at import data and deforestation rates and found that palm oil bought by Americans may have caused 103,000 acres of deforestation, mostly in Indonesia. I want to focus on palm oil today because we’ve known about this problem for a long time. Palm oil is environmentally destructive, grown on vast plantations after rainforests have been flattened and burned. And after years of hard-won progress, the deforestation associated with palm oil production in Indonesia is ticking up again.

The climate crisis ends up touching on all of those issues, as CNN’s chief climate correspondent Bill Weir told me. Removing politics from climate changeWOLF: It’s interesting to hear you say that about Texas, because the governor and the Republican-dominated legislature there would seemingly be opposed to doing anything specifically because of climate change. Joe Biden has tried to make the argument that addressing climate change should be an economic boom. It seems clear that we’re going to burst through the 2-degree tipping point that had been previously suggested as the tipping point for climate change. What that means for marine ecosystems and coral reefs, which are the cradles of life in the oceans, and what it means for the power of storms as we head into hurricane season has scientists really, really worried.

Unilever said Tuesday that it will spin off its ice cream brands, including Ben & Jerry's. It's the latest change for Ben & Jerry's, which was founded by two childhood friends from Long Island. Here's the story of Ben & Jerry's, from a gas station in Vermont to global distribution. While many companies keep away from social issues, Ben & Jerry's has made weighing in part of its strategy. Now, Unilever is reportedly planning to spin off Ben & Jerry's, plus other ice cream brands, such as Magnum.

Unilever, the consumer goods giant, said on Tuesday that it would cut 7,500 jobs and spin off its ice cream unit, which includes Ben & Jerry’s, to reduce costs and simplify its portfolio of brands. The moves would make for “a simpler, more focused and higher performing Unilever,” Ian Meakins, the London-based company’s chair, said in a statement. The group’s ice cream unit generated 7.9 billion euros ($8.6 billion) in sales last year, or about 13 percent of the group’s total. The division is home to Ben & Jerry’s, which Unilever acquired in 2000, along with other brands like Cornetto, Magnum, Talenti and Wall’s. The spinoff is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The bright side of divorce, according to experts
  + stars: | 2024-03-19 | by ( Madeline Holcombe | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Divorce rates have been steadily trending downward in the United States, according to recent data, but marriages ending are still a common, disruptive experience. Most people probably don’t head into marriage anticipating divorce — but for those who find themselves in one, there are ways to encourage compassion for one another and ultimately build something stronger, experts said. Grieving the lossA divorce can be amicable yet still marked by loss and grief, said Rebecca Hendrix, a marriage and family therapist in New York. Support can come from a therapist, a religious leader, friends, a divorce support group, or even books and media that make you feel less alone, she added. Divorce may motivate some reflection on ways you want to make changes or even launch the first call you ever make to a therapist, Hendrix said.

LONDON (AP) — Unilever, the company that makes Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, Dove soaps and Vaseline, said Tuesday that it is cutting 7,500 jobs and spinning off its ice cream business to reduce costs and boost profits. London-based Unilever said its ice cream business, which also includes Magnum bars, has “distinct characteristics” from its other brands and would benefit from separate ownership to increase growth. The British consumer goods company with 128,000 employees also said it is launching a “productivity program” that is expected to lead to a reduction of about 7,500 mostly office-based jobs worldwide. The company behind Hellman’s mayonnaise, Axe fragrances and Cif household cleaners said it is targeting underlying sales growth of mid-single digits after spinning off the ice cream business. It saw sales volume drop 3.6% in 2022 after jacking up prices 13.3% on average across its brands that year.

London CNN —The world’s biggest ice cream business is about to go it alone. The newly minted firm will boast five of the 10 best-selling ice cream brands worldwide, namely Magnum, Ben & Jerry’s, Breyers, Walls and Cornetto. “The future growth of Unilever and ice cream is best served by separating the business,” Unilever CEO Hein Schumacher told journalists. Philippe Wojazer/ReutersThe origins of Unilever’s ice cream business can be traced back to the summer of 1913, when Thomas Wall started selling ice cream from his family butcher shop in London. But its ice cream sales took a hit last year as cash-strapped consumers cut back on non-essential spending.
