The move comes days after Taiwan’s ruling party won a closely fought presidential election, putting current Vice President Lai Ching-te—whom Beijing condemns as a separatist—in position to become the leader of the democratically self-ruled island in May.

Recent reports point to corruption and readiness problems in the Chinese military, the rocket force in particular. "No ceasefire can be one sided and no ceasefire can be unconditional." Wong will then travel to Jordan before visiting the West Bank, where she will meet representatives of communities affected by violence from Israeli settlers. CNN —It looked on paper to be an easy start to Novak Djokovic’s Australian Open campaign, but the 24-time grand slam champion was given a scare by Croatian youngster Dino Prizmic in a thrilling first round encounter on Sunday. The 18-year-old impressed during his debut in a grand slam main draw. However, the effort it took to temporarily take the lead against the Serb looked to take its toll as Prizmic’s level began to drop as the match wore on. Djokovic, who had picked up a minor injury ahead of this year’s Australian Open, began to click into gear and recovered to win the third set. “He deserves every applause, every credit he got tonight,” Djokovic added.

Gold slides on brewing concerns of U.S. rate cuts still far off

Gold bars and gold coins of different sizes lie in a safe on a table at the precious metal dealer Pro Aurum. Spot gold was down 0.1% at $2,024.99 per ounce, after rising as much as 0.8% before the data. The dollar index extended gains after data showed U.S. consumer prices rose more than expected in December, which could delay a much anticipated U.S. rate cut in March. Traders see a 67% probability of a rate cut in March, according to the CME FedWatch tool, compared with about a 71% chance seen before the report. Higher rates dim the appeal of gold, which pays no interest.

Microsoft has pointed to customers including Visa, BP, Honda and Pfizer using Copilot, and professional services firm partners on Copilot AI including Accenture, EY, KPMG, and PwC. And even amid the hype, it's important to keep in mind that as gen AI spending grows, it is still dwarfed by companies' cybersecurity budget needs. The state bank actions come at a time the Chinese yuan strengthened 2.55% to the dollar in November for the best month this year. Chinese state banks often act on behalf of the country's central bank in the foreign exchange market, but they would also trade on their own behalf. Big banks were spotted doing a similar trade late last month, helping the yuan's recovery against a broadly weaker U.S. dollar, Reuters reported.
