Attorney General Merrick Garland said he was not instructed to charge Donald Trump with federal crimes, pushing back against comments made by the former president over the weekend. Trump told NBC that the charges he’s facing as part of special counsel Jack Smith’s classified documents and election interference probes are “Biden political indictments,” and that Biden “said to the attorney general ‘indict him.’”Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California asked Garland to respond to the allegation, “Was [Trump] telling the truth or was he lying when he said the president told you to indict him?”“No one has told me to indict,” Garland said, “and in this case the decision to indict was made by the special counsel.”“So that statement the president made on Sunday was false,” Schiff asked. Garland again repeated that “no one has told me who should be indicted in any matter like this, and the decision about indictment was made by Mr. Smith,” referring to special counsel Jack Smith.

CNN —House Republicans and Attorney General Merrick Garland clashed Wednesday at a testy hearing that offered a preview of the coming Republican impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden focused on allegations surrounding his son, Hunter Biden. He also didn’t engage in GOP attacks against special counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into former President Donald Trump. Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, one of the three committee chairs spearheading the impeachment inquiry, accused the Justice Department of not prosecuting Hunter Biden over the tax years when Hunter Biden was on the board of Ukrainian energy firm Burisma. “I’m going to say again, and again, if necessary, I did not interfere with, did not investigate, did not make determinations” on the Hunter Biden case, the attorney general said. CNN —A plan to build a multi-billion dollar Chinese glass factory in Indonesia’s Riau Islands Archipelago has sparked fierce protests from indigenous islanders who are opposed to their villages being torn down. [1/6] U.S. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) speaks with reporters as he arrives for the day at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, U.S. September 18, 2023. Republicans hold a 221-212 majority in the House that leaves McCarthy with little room to maneuver as he contends with opposition to the spending legislation from a small group of hardline conservatives. "The Republican House is failing the American people again and pursuing a path of gamesmanship and circus," Republican Representative Victoria Spartz said in a statement. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat, called the House Republican CR agreement "slapdash and reckless," adding that a bipartisan continuing resolution is "the only answer for avoiding a government shutdown." Unless the House can move forward on spending, Republican leaders said privately that they could be forced to move directly into negotiations with Senate Democrats on appropriations bills, circumventing hardliners.

The Texas Senate on Saturday ended deliberations over whether Attorney General Ken Paxton should be removed from office, putting the Republican's historic impeachment trial on the brink of a verdict. Paxton, who did not attend the majority of the two-week trial, was not seen in the chamber as some senators wandered around their desks. If convicted, Paxton would become Texas' first statewide official convicted on impeachment charges in more than 100 years. The indictment comes weeks after the collapse of a plea deal that would have averted a criminal trial and distracting headlines for President Joe Biden. Trump's include federal indictments over the handling of classified documents and efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss to Joe Biden. Trump also pointed to the lack of connection to Joe Biden in the gun charge plea agreement. Federal prosecutors investigating Hunter Biden have not indicated Joe Biden is connected over the course of their yearslong probe. Two FBI agents who worked on the Hunter Biden case testified separately behind closed doors this week to lawmakers about allegations of political interference in the case.

The impeachment inquiry comes at a fragile political moment for the president. An impeachment inquiry would give Republicans broad new powers to request documents and testimony about the Bidens. For now, the White House views the situation from a communications standpoint rather than as a legal issue. “Kevin McCarthy, Marjorie Taylor Greene, and MAGA Republicans just launched a beyond ridiculous impeachment inquiry into President Biden,” the fundraising email reads. An element of the White House strategy is keeping him focused on his governing duties, including plans to deliver what the White House has billed as a “major economic address” in Maryland on Thursday.

Some have compared the adjustment process to the controversial practice of "stack ranking," in which managers ranked employees on a forced curve. Some employees feel that the essence of stack ranking has returned with the company's instructions to managers on how to handle this year's employee reviews. This year, Microsoft managers scored employees on a scale from 0 to 200, as they've done previously. The ratings are "Lower Impact Than Expected (LITE)," "Slightly Lower Impact Than Expected (SLITE)," "Successful Impact," and "Exceptional Impact." Swiss post mortem of Credit Suisse crisis to go back to 2015

The logo of Credit Suisse is pictured on a building near the Hallenstadion where took place the Annual General Meeting, two weeks after being bought by rival UBS in a government-brokered rescue, in Zurich, Switzerland, April 4, 2023. A Swiss parliamentary committee said that it has completed the so-called "investigation concept" for the post mortem, dividing the time periods it will examine in the run up to the emergency Credit Suisse rescue. The first phase will cover the events before the middle of 2022, going back to 2015 when the Swiss cabinet submitted its first evaluation report on systemically important banks. The actions of the government, financial markets watchdog FINMA and the Swiss National Bank as Credit Suisse's situation worsened towards the end of 2022 to March 2023 will also come under the microscope. It would also award an external mandate to analyse how the problems at Credit Suisse developed over the past few years, although it would not assess the bank's management, as this was outside its remit.
