Valued at $4 billion in 2021, Cerebras is reportedly seeking to roughly double that in its IPO. The customer, G42, is backed by Microsoft , and it's entirely responsible for the $1.43 billion purchase commitment. G42 can pick up $500 million more in Cerebras shares if it commits to spend $5 billion on the company's computing clusters. The major Wall Street banks, for their part, are finding other ways to play in the burgeoning AI infrastructure market. CNN —New observations of Jupiter’s Great Red Spot captured by the Hubble Space Telescope show that the 190-year-old storm wiggles like gelatin and shape-shifts like a squeezed stress ball. Although storms are generally considered unstable, the Great Red Spot has persisted for nearly two centuries. Recently, a separate team of astronomers peered into the heart of the Great Red Spot using the James Webb Space Telescope to capture new details in infrared light. The Great Red Spot seems to wiggle like a bowl of gelatin over the 90-day period. The most luxurious experience of them all, however, could be found in the dining car. The latter was the first train car to offer on-board meals, including regional specialties like gumbo, which were prepared in a 3-foot-by-6 foot kitchen. By the 1870s, dining cars could be found on sleeper trains across North America. But this decentralized production model also contained the seed of dining car’s ultimate demise. And despite a revival of interest in train travel on the continent, dining cars (or certainly those equipped with kitchens) are now largely the preserve of tourist services.

Another key US inflation gauge fell in September
  + stars: | 2024-10-11 | by ( Alicia Wallace | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —Inflation for US producers slowed further in September, adding to hopes that prices aren’t getting jacked up before they get to consumers. The annual rate is running faster than the 1.6% gain economists expected, according to FactSet estimates; however, August’s rate was revised higher from the initial 1.7% estimate, so prices still fell in September. PPI is important because it’s often seen as a bellwether for the price increases consumers will wind up paying down the line. On Thursday, the Consumer Price Index — a measurement of average price changes for commonly purchased goods and services — cooled to 2.4%, its lowest rate since February 2021. As a result, Fed officials have now shifted from trying to contain inflation to trying to keep the job market healthy, the other half of their so-called dual mandate.

JPMorgan Chase is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings before the opening bell Friday. The biggest American bank has thrived in a rising rate environment, posting record net income figures since the Fed started hiking rates in 2022. Now, with the Fed cutting rates, there are questions as to how JPMorgan will navigate the change. Last month, JPMorgan dialed back expectations for 2025 net interest income and expenses, and analysts will want more details on those projections. Wells Fargo is scheduled to release results later Friday, while Bank of America , Goldman Sachs , Citigroup and Morgan Stanley report next week.

Luckily, feeling wealthy is less about the money in your bank account and more about your attitude toward the money you already have. In short, your ability to feel wealthy depends on "what your experiences and perceptions on money are." This involves letting go of a well-known number like $1 million and embracing your personal financial journey, she says. Goals such as establishing an emergency fund or improving your credit score, when reached, can help you feel wealthy without having to build a huge net worth. In other words, you don't need $1 million in hand today to feel wealthy — just a plan to grow your money over time.

AMD launches AI chip to rival Nvidia's Blackwell
  + stars: | 2024-10-10 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.nbcnews.com   time to read: +5 min
AMD launched a new artificial-intelligence chip on Thursday that is taking direct aim at Nvidia’s data center graphics processors, known as GPUs. In the past few years, Nvidia has dominated the majority of the data center GPU market, but AMD is historically in second place. The new AI chip is the successor to the MI300X, which started shipping late last year. Most industry estimates say Nvidia has over 90% of the market for data center AI chips. The new CPUs are particularly good for feeding data into AI workloads, AMD said.

Social Security recipients can expect a 2.5% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) increase in their payments starting in 2025 amid cooling inflation. On Thursday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the 12-month consumer price index inflation rate hit 2.4% in September. The Social Security Administration calculates the annual COLA based on consumer price growth in the months of July, August and September. That, advocates say, is proof that seniors and other Social Security recipients are facing a declining standard of living. “Congress knows this problem is going on, but the gridlock can’t seem to solve anything, much less the third rail of politics that is Social Security,” said Shannon G. Benton, executive director of the Senior Citizens League, an advocacy group.

A big jump in retail spending would be the next data point indicating a "no landing" of the economy. A no-landing scenario occurs when strong economic growth fuels inflation and hinders rate cuts. Bank of America analysts expect September retail sales data, set for release on October 17, to show a 0.8% surge. "Monthly retail sales data can be volatile. If retail sales accelerate considerably, in our view, the narrative may shift further toward 'no landing' or even re-acceleration," they said.

Normally, at the beginning of such a cycle, floating-rate loans reprice downward faster than deposits, creating a short-term headwind on net interest income. JPMorgan President & COO Daniel Pinto weighs in on what the industry looks like from the other side of rate cuts – and how long any pressures may last.

Tesla is expected to unveil a new service at its Robotaxi event that will impact Uber and Lyft. The ride-hailing industry has so far been dominated by two major players — Uber and Lyft — and Gawrelski said Tesla's Robotaxi could mark a new challenger jockeying for market share. Uber, Lyft, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ives said Tesla's Robotaxi event will be a historical day for the auto industry — and it will pressure Uber to seek out more partnerships. In September, Waymo announced that its Waymo One ride-hailing service would be available to users in Austin and Atlanta exclusively through the Uber app.

Consumer price inflation slows in September
  + stars: | 2024-10-10 | by ( Alicia Wallace | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +1 min
CNN —Price increases have slowed considerably from their peak two years ago and are now rising at a similar pace to inflation in 2017 and 2018, according to new inflation data released Thursday. The Consumer Price Index, which measures price changes across commonly purchased goods and services, was 2.4% for the 12 months ended in September, slowing from a 2.5% annual rate in August, according to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report. On a monthly basis, prices rose 0.2%, in line with the advance in August but faster than economists’ projections of 0.1%. A jump in food prices combined with ongoing shelter-related price-hikes pushed the overall CPI higher last month, BLS said. Still, economists say that inflation is headed in the right direction, because the factors that pushed prices higher during the pandemic era have largely faded while demand has slowed to more normal levels.

The solana cryptocurrency could outperform ether and bitcoin in a big way if former President Donald Trump wins the U.S. election, according to Standard Chartered. In a new research note, the bank's head of digital assets, Geoffrey Kendrick, outlined his expectations for bitcoin, ether and solana depending on whether Trump or his Democratic opponent Vice President Kamala Harris wins the presidential election. "Similar arguments can be made for the relative outlook for ETH versus BTC under a Trump versus Harris outcome in the US," Kendrick added. If Harris takes the White House, however, Kendrick said he expects bitcoin to outperform ether, and ether to outperform solana in 2025. Solana valuation Despite his bullish call on solana under a Trump presidency, Kendrick noted that its current valuation looks "richly priced" versus ether on all backward-looking measures.
