"We wanted a marshmallow to have a little bite to it, not just be a foamy air," he says. Jon Sebastiani, Smashmallow founderSmashmallow had a killer brand — but the product was still basically being made one batch at a time, on kitchen counters. If Smashmallow couldn't produce enough marshmallows, Tanis wouldn't get its dough. The thing is, even though Smashmallow failed, Sebastiani didn't. The Vanguard Energy Fund originated in 1984 and until Levering arrived, it had focused for more than three-decades on oil, gas and coal investments. "My view was that's fossil fuel energy — that's not energy," Levering told CNBC in an interview. Levering took over the Vanguard fund in 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic had effectively shut down the global economy. Levering said the Vanguard Energy Fund is structured to remain resilient and deliver returns through its hybrid approach, regardless of the macroeconomic turns the world takes. The sheer persistence of the equity rally, with the S & P 500 up 16 of 18 weeks and refusing to succumb to supposed late-February seasonal weakness, has converted the cautious. Still, by some lights, stocks' valuation is one of the better sentiment indicators, and by that measure the investment community is pretty enthusiastic. More simply, we continue to see elevated but not alarming P/Es in the S & P 500 broadly while the median P/E of the top 10 names in the index remains close to past peaks." Coming at a time when the S & P 500 is more than 13% above its 200-day moving average — pretty stretched — and we haven't had even a 3% pullback since October. The "right" cyclical sectors are leading (industrials and consumer discretionary in addition to tech), and the equal-weight S & P 500 is nosing toward its old high.

Read previewAt a recent closed-door fundraiser, President Joe Biden had to rely on note cards prepped by his staff to provide donors with detailed answers on his policy. But since the advent of mass communication technology and, as a result, an increasing expectation of US leaders to make public addresses, presidents have long relied on note cards and teleprompters to face their constituents. Even US presidents who had the public reputation of being robust and nimble needed note cards, Kastor said. John F. Kennedy, who was able to keep his medical problems, including persistent back pain, hidden from the public, used note cards. Former President Donald Trump, who is now 77, has received flack for relying on note cards albeit for different reasons.

Remove the bread from the oven, get it off the cookie sheets, and enjoy. If it isn't devoured right away, the bread will stay very fresh for two days. Steven JohnWhen the bread is ready to come out, quickly transfer the baguettes from the cookie sheet to a cooling rack. The baguettes stay fresh for two days, and I think the texture is still OK on the third. To thaw them out, heat your oven to 450 F, turn the heat off, and pop the frozen bread into the warmed oven for about 10 minutes.

I didn't find the bedding at Ikea to be that desirable. In my opinion, most of the bedding I came across didn't feel very soft to the touch. Paynter RhedI wouldn't always generalize a whole department of a store as something I'd skip over but, in my opinion, the bedding at Ikea is not very desirable. I found the sheets, comforters, pillows, and blankets I came across weren't the quality I look for in bedding. Consider purchases like these carefully since you can spend about a quarter of your day in bed.

My 11-year-old son and I traveled nearly 27 hours from Boston to St. Louis via Amtrak. I booked a private bedroom and two roomettes to ensure we'd be comfortable. Our 27-hour train ride wasn't cheap, but I've never regretted the experience we had staying in a bedroom and private roomettes. Erika Ebsworth-GooldThe private bedroom was larger than I'd expected, complete with a full-size sofa, a separate captain-style chair, and an area for luggage. I thought the private bedroom was well worth the price.

As of Feb. 29 with 313 companies having reported, 50.2% posted a beat, according to a CNBC analysis of FactSet data. This was the smallest percentage of beats — thus the worst earnings season — since the first quarter of 2020 when the pandemic first hit European firms. Share buyback bonanzaSharon Bell, a senior European strategist at Goldman Sachs, told CNBC that she had noticed a new trend for European corporates during this earnings season. "What you have seen is a lot of companies announcing buybacks," she told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe" Tuesday. "It is absolutely huge, you've never really seen this before in 20, 30 years, European companies pay dividends, they don't do buybacks," she said.

Semiconductor firms such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company are at risk of water shortages as processing technology advances, S&P Global Ratings said in a report. "There is a direct line between water use and chip sophistication, as fabs use ultrapure water — fresh water processed to extremely high purity — to rinse wafers between each process. The more advanced the semiconductor, the more process steps, the more water consumed," said S&P Global Ratings credit analyst Hins Li. TSMC's water consumption per unit grew over 35% after it advanced to 16-nanometer process nodes in 2015, data from S&P revealed. "We believe this was mainly due to the migration to advanced nodes, which require more fabrication processes," S&P said.

With Covid-19 disruptions in the rearview mirror and the cruise industry back on track, another cruise line has taken a step towards possibly going public. China's Country Garden Holdings said Wednesday it received a liquidation petition filed by one of its creditors, deepening worries about the country's beleaguered property sector. Country Garden said it will oppose the petition "vigorously" and seek legal measures to do so. Country Garden said it intends to "proactively communicate" and work with its offshore creditors on its restructuring plan. London CNN —The Magnificent 7 tech stocks have been a big part of the extraordinary US market rally. But there’s a rival group of companies powering European stocks to new heights with even better returns, by some measures. Dubbed the “Granolas,” those 11 companies accounted for 60% of the gains on Europe’s benchmark stock index over the past 12 months. They have even slightly outperformed the Magnificent 7 over a longer period, according to Goldman Sachs. Their standout performance has “raised the issue of concentration effects” in the region’s stock market, says Philip Lawlor, managing director of markets research at Wilshire Indexes.

The German share price index DAX graph is pictured at the stock exchange in Frankfurt, Germany, January 19, 2024. Staff | ReutersOver the last 12 months, just 11 stocks made up half of the gains that powered the pan-European Stoxx 600 stock index to a record-high close on Friday. "From a Global point of view, the GRANOLAS have even outperformed the so-called Magnificent 7 over the past two years. Their (out)performance is even more impressive on a risk-adjusted basis: with a volatility 2x lower than for the Magnificent 7, the GRANOLAS help to boost the Sharpe ratio." "This suggests that, in Europe, nearly all revenue growth of the STOXX 600 will come from the GRANOLAS.

But department stores, focused on America’s middle class, are fading. The victims of shifting consumer tastes were not the department stores that anchored the local mall, it was the small, locally owned stores along downtown shopping districts that were closing their doors. And possibly even more than the big box competitors, department stores have suffered from consumers shifting to buying items online rather than in person. The steady closing of the department stores that once served as “anchors” of malls across suburban America has been another nail in the coffin of many malls, hurting the department stores that remained in hollowed-out malls with a fraction of their earlier traffic. Saunders said one of the primary problem for Macy’s is that its holding company, formerly known as Federated Department Stores, spent much of its resources on buying other department store brands, such May’s Department Stores, and Filene’s, rather than investing in the stores its held.

CNN —From this week, soccer fans will be able to buy Australian goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold’s Nike jersey, more than six months after she wore the purple top at the Women’s World Cup. Arnold kept a tournament-high four clean sheets during the Matildas’ run to the semifinals of last year’s Women’s World Cup, which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. That prompted England shot-stopper Mary Earps to campaign vociferously for the sportswear company to release the women’s goalkeeper jerseys ahead of the tournament. CNN has contacted Nike for comment regarding the release of the Australian goalkeeper jersey. Arnold kept four clean sheets at the Women's World Cup last year.

He prefers getting to know founders long before they decide to raise money so he can pounce on the right opportunity. Investors, including hedge funds, hurtled term sheets at founders to beat the competition, skipping the usual diligence along the way. Flush with cash, the partners are seeing a flood of hyper-growth startups come to market for funding after a two-year dry spell. The funding blockage is also softening as valuations come back to earth, Costolo said. "Prices are a lot more sensible now," Costolo said, noting the exception of valuations in artificial intelligence.

Washington, DC CNN —Americans racked up a record amount of credit card debt in 2023, soaring past a trillion dollars. “Consumers still have a lot of money left over to be able to spend, so the credit card data is often misinterpreted,” Russell Price, chief economist at Ameriprise Financial, told CNN. According to a LendingTree analysis of more than 350,000 credit reports, the average unpaid credit card balance was $6,864 in the fourth quarter. Overall, US household debt (including credit card balances) rose to a new high of $17.5 trillion in the fourth quarter, up 1.2% from the prior three-month period. So, while there certainly isn’t a shortage of economic hurdles bedeviling people’s budget — and credit card debt has surged — the big picture indicates that, so far, Americans (and their economy) remain healthy.

This allows cool, fresh air to come in and old, stale air to flow out. Opening the windows in your home or office has the benefit of replacing the moist inside air with dry, fresh air from outside. Austrian windows open vertically and horizontally, so by keeping the top of the window open, cold air is allowed to circulate into the room at night. Their parents swear the fresh air helps them sleep better, and they're probably right. Sleeping in a room that's been filled with cold, fresh air is a similar concept.

Investors are concerned that sticky inflation will mean that the Fed will hold onto its higher-for-longer interest rate policy. Why rich companies also keep getting richerThere's another major disconnect that the broader market's impressive performance is masking, strategists at Morgan Stanley remarked in a recent note. Since then, the return gap has gotten even worse in a historically narrow market, Wilson wrote. Morgan Stanley"The equity market understands this economy is not that great for the average company or consumer," Wilson wrote. This rare combination of expansionary fiscal policy and restrictive monetary policy has had the unintended consequence of "crowding out the private economy," Wilson wrote. Companies that can grow without borrowing money at unattractive rates are at a huge advantage, which Morgan Stanley believes has fueled their immense success lately.
