New York CNN —Last year, Ikea slashed prices on roughly 2,000 products to give inflation-weary customers a break. Ikea, the world’s largest furniture retailer, said that it doesn’t have any regrets about prioritizing “lowering the prices” in a $2 billion discount initiative at all of its stores globally. Like its rivals, Ikea gradually hiked prices since the peak of Covid-19 in 2020 as the costs of materials and transport rose. The company’s major discount program last year cut prices on several of its most popular items, like its Billy bookcase. Ikea sold 1.2 billion meatballs for the year, with a company spokesperson telling CNN that it also sold more meals at its cafés.

Detroit Reuters —Chrysler parent Stellantis confirmed on Thursday that CEO Carlos Tavares would retire at the end of his contract in early 2026 and announced major senior management changes as it struggles to turn around its lagging North American operations. The world’s fourth-largest automaker by sales said it now planned to name his successor by the fourth quarter of 2025. The automaker also appointed Antonio Filosa as its North America chief operating officer in addition to his role as Jeep brand CEO, succeeding Carlos Zarlenga, whose future role has not been announced. Stellantis last week lowered its forecast from positive cash flow to negative cash flow of between 5 billion and 10 billion euros ($5.5 billion and $10.9 billion) this year. The broad management shakeup was meant to address these concerns, Tavares said in a statement Thursday.

CNN —A Nepalese teenager has become the youngest person to summit the world’s 14 highest peaks. Nima started his epic journey in September 2022 when he climbed Nepal’s 8,163m Manaslu. Over the next two years, he summited all of the “8000ers” including Everest, the world’s highest mountain at 8,848.86m, and the notoriously dangerous K2 at 8,611m. Goldman Sachs added that anecdotal evidence indicates hotel prices and airfares during the holiday were lower than year-ago levels. Taipei, Taiwan Reuters —Four employees of Taiwan’s Foxconn, the world’s largest iPhone assembler, have been detained in China under “quite strange” circumstances, Taiwan’s government said. The council said Foxconn had stated the company had “suffered no losses and that the four employees had done nothing to harm the company’s interests.”“This has seriously damaged the confidence of companies. Calls to China’s Taiwan Affairs Office seeking comment outside of office hours went unanswered. In June, Taiwan’s government raised its travel warning for China, telling its citizens not to go unless absolutely necessary, following a threat from Beijing to execute those deemed “diehard” Taiwan independence supporters. China claims democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory, over the strong objections of the government in Taipei.

New York CNN —Melinda French Gates is shedding more light on her $1 billion plan to promote women’s rights, announcing Wednesday a new $250 million fund to improve women’s mental and physical health. The billionaire philanthropist launched “Action for Women’s Health”, a fund through her organization Pivotal Ventures. Its webpage says that “women’s health has been underfunded, overlooked, and misunderstood” and that health inequities between men and women “not only impact women’s daily lives, but they can also hurt women’s futures.”“It’s clear we need to do a better job of addressing the barriers to women’s health. “We’re seeing the devastating impacts” of Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 abortion rights case, being overturned, French Gates told the publication. Harris, the Democratic nominee for US president, has been vocal about women’s reproductive rights.
