Gold prices were poised for their biggest weekly jump in five months on Friday, hovering near a historic high, as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's remarks cemented mid-year rate cut bets, ahead of a key jobs report later in the day. Gold prices surged to another record high on Friday as data showing a rise in the U.S. unemployment rate boosted expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve could begin cutting interest rates soon. Low interest rates are supportive for gold prices as they reduce the opportunity cost of holding bullion. Gold prices will continue to trend higher overall, though a short consolidation may be necessary," said Tai Wong, a New York-based independent metals trader. Meanwhile, London's gold price benchmark hit another record high of $2171.30 per troy ounce at an afternoon auction on Friday, the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) said.

Read previewThe last thing Tim Cook needs this year is for the iPhone to give him a headache. Unfortunately for Apple, that task could be complicated as signs emerge that its workhorse gadget needs a revamp. In its most recent quarter, Apple generated almost $70 billion of its $119.6 billion total revenue from iPhone sales. China, Apple's most important international market, has started to sour on iPhones, bucking a trend of growth in other regions. Apple's AI efforts, led by ex-Googler and senior vice president John Giannandrea, could introduce several AI features to iPhones that offer an edge over Chinese competitors.

What Makes a Top Runway Model in 2024?
  + stars: | 2024-03-05 | by ( Elizabeth Paton | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
There is one model who walked in more fashion shows than any other in 2023. Yilan Hua is from China. Ms. Hua, 24, is the leading face of a new generation of popular Chinese models that includes He Cong, Chu Wong and Ying Ouyang — despite a family death this season that kept her off the runway for much of Paris Fashion Week. So why is the industry so taken with her, and what does her ascent reflect about the importance of China to luxury fashion? “Yilan doesn’t necessarily embody the traditional beauty standards revered by Chinese audiences,” Ms. Zhang wrote in an email.

CNN —When Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. addressed the Australian Parliament last week there was no mistaking the fighting talk. The Philippines accused China's coast guard of setting up the barrier at the mouth of the disputed fishing ground. That meeting will also be attended by several other nations with territorial disagreements with China – including Vietnam, Brunei and Malaysia. Collin Koh, research fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore, said Australia was unlikely to back any tough language at the summit pertaining to the South China Sea or any other hot-button issue. Congress sent a short-term funding bill to President Joe Biden's desk Thursday, averting a partial government shutdown this weekend and buying lawmakers more time to fund federal agencies through September. The CR is part of a broader bipartisan spending deal congressional leaders announced Wednesday that includes six of the 12 spending bills that fund federal agencies. The new CR would extend the funding deadline for half of the dozen must-pass spending bills by one week, to March 8. Leaders say that should give Congress enough time to pass all of the spending bills for the fiscal year that ends on Sept. 30. He has indicated that foreign aid will be tackled separately, without committing to allowing a vote on the Ukraine funding.

The production designer Jack Fisk is the artistic force behind the look of a number of beloved movies: numerous Terrence Malick films like “Badlands” and “The Thin Red Line,” Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood,” Alejandro Iñárritu’s “The Revenant,” and, most recently, Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” for which Fisk is nominated for an Oscar. When the writer Noah Gallagher Shannon decided to profile Fisk for The New York Times Magazine, he didn’t know much about production design. After reporting the piece, Noah says he learned that often when people appreciate the cinematography of a movie, what they’re actually appreciating is the production design: what the frame looks like, rather than how the frame was captured. And Jack Fisk, he found, has a singular philosophy and approach to making the world captured in each movie frame come to life.

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken said on Friday that the American government now considers new Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories to be “inconsistent with international law,” reversing a policy set under the Trump administration and returning to a decades-long U.S. position. Mr. Blinken spoke at a news conference in Buenos Aires, after Israel’s finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, made an announcement on Thursday indicating thousands of new residences would be added to settlements. “It’s been longstanding U.S. policy under Republican and Democratic administrations alike that new settlements are counterproductive to reaching enduring peace,” he said. And in our judgment, this only weakens — it doesn’t strengthen — Israel’s security.”Mr. Blinken was in Argentina for meetings with the recently elected president, Javier Milei, and the foreign minister, Diana Mondino. State Department officials declined to say what actions, if any, the United States might take to hold Israeli settlers or the government legally accountable for the building of new settlements.

The Biden administration and European allies call President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia a tyrant and a war criminal. The president of Brazil says that Ukraine and Russia are both to blame for the war that began with the Russian military’s invasion. And his nation’s purchases of Russian energy and fertilizer have soared, pumping billions of dollars into the Russian economy. The views of the president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, encapsulate the global bind in which the United States and Ukraine find themselves as the war enters its third year. Wielding economic sanctions and calling for a collective defense of international order, the United States sought to punish Russia with economic pain and political exile.

Joy-Ann Reid didn’t set out to publish her best-selling third book, “Medgar and Myrlie: Medgar Evers and the Love Story That Awakened America” — which chronicles the lives of the prominent activists of the same name — in February, a month dedicated to both romance and Black history. “It’s a civil rights love story that gets released, you know, in the month of love,” the MSNBC journalist said in a phone interview, a day after Valentine’s. To tell this slice of this country’s history, one of racial segregation and violence, through the lens of a couple’s bond may not be an obvious choice. But for Reid, who waxes lyrical about Evers and Myrlie Evers-Williams, there wasn’t an alternative. “In talking with Myrlie about Medgar Evers, what comes through most is how in love with him she still is, and how he was truly the love of her life,” said Reid, who conducted more than a half-dozen interviews with Evers-Williams.

United States one dollar bills are curled and inspected during production at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington. The dollar was steady on Monday after data last week showing U.S. inflation remained sticky cast doubts on when the Federal Reserve would start its easing cycle, while the yen remained rooted near the psychologically key 150 per dollar level. As part of the investment, Singapore will work to ensure it can secure access to the advanced chips "that are so crucial to AI development and deployment," Wong said.
