It appears that Apple opted for Google's TPU chips over Nvidia's for its AI development. An Apple research paper highlights the use of TPUv5p chips from Google for iPhone AI. AdvertisementIt looks like Apple has confirmed it's using Google's chips for Apple Intelligence — not Nvidia's. There was no mention of Nvidia in an Apple research paper published on Monday that discussed foundation language models developed to power Apple Intelligence features. In fact, the tech giant wrote that it used TPUv4 and TPUv5p chips, Google's tensing processing units, to train its artificial intelligence tools.

To start let's examine the 200-day moving average on the daily chart below shown as a dashed blue line. Looking back to the most recent correction in April, that was the support level of the price-to-moving average spread: 34%. We could be approaching a support level based on this analysis. This could occur by price continuing to move lower along with the moving average trending higher as the recent higher price readings factor into the average. The 50-day moving average of the daily volume totals is clearly in a decline since April.

UBS sees the recent tech stock sell-off as a buy-the-dip opportunity for long-term investors. UBS cites attractive valuations, solid fundamentals, and fading technical factors as reason to stick with large-cap tech. But according to UBS, the recent decline in tech stocks is only temporary, and that should be apparent when mega-cap tech stocks report their second-quarter earnings results later this week. A healthy sell-off in tech stocks has led to more attractive valuations for the fast-growing sector, especially when compared to previous bubbles. "While the tech sector appears to be expensive after the rally this year, price-to-earnings multiples remain much lower than in the dot-com era, when many tech stocks had much lower-quality earnings," UBS said.

Apple said on Monday that the artificial intelligence models underpinning Apple Intelligence, its AI system, were pretrained on processors designed by Google, a sign that Big Tech companies are looking for alternatives to Nvidia when it comes to the training of cutting-edge AI. Apple's choice of Google's homegrown Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) for training was detailed in a technical paper just published by the company. Separately, Apple released a preview version of Apple Intelligence for some devices on Monday. Apple doesn't name Google or Nvidia in its 47-page paper, but did note its Apple Foundation Model (AFM) and AFM server are trained on "Cloud TPU clusters." "This system allows us to train the AFM models efficiently and scalably, including AFM-on-device, AFM-server, and larger models," Apple said in the paper.

Katie TarasovChasing powerThere are more than 8,000 data centers globally, with the highest concentration in the U.S. And, thanks to AI, there will be far more by the end of the decade. Boston Consulting Group estimates demand for data centers will rise 15%-20% every year through 2030, when they're expected to comprise 16% of total U.S. power consumption. Tench said Vantage's data centers typically have the capacity to use upward of 64 megawatts of power, or as much power as tens of thousands of homes. And as we think about AI applications, those numbers can grow quite significantly beyond that into hundreds of megawatts," Tench said . Vantage Data Centers is expanding a campus outside Phoenix, Arizona, to offer 176 megawatts of capacity Vantage Data CentersHardening the gridThe aging grid is often ill-equipped to handle the load even where enough power can be generated.

That will be the case in this jam-packed week , with the earnings from Microsoft on Tuesday, Meta Platforms on Wednesday, and Apple and Amazon on Thursday. If Alphabet said it cut back on data-center spending, then it would be alleged the company is falling behind Amazon and Microsoft in the AI race. The company also is now dogged by another competitor in search engines after ChatGPT creator OpenAI announced a prototype of SearchGPT . Apple reports on Thursday, and if you think the cloud-computing heavyweights are spending on too much AI, then you should be buying Apple. Nvidia 's slump is hitting some technical milestones that suggest the stock could continue to slide, according to Raymond James. Raymond James chart analyst Javed Mirza said in a July 25 note to clients that Nvidia has triggered a "mechanical sell" signal based on a moving average convergence/divergence indicator, or " MACD ," which measures price momentum — and it is not the only technical signal flashing sell. The key level to watch is Nvidia's 50-day moving average, currently around $118 per share, according to Mirza. "A multi-day close below important technical support at the 50-day moving average … would confirm a new short-term corrective phase was underway. If that view spreads to executives at Big Tech companies such as Alphabet, it could result in new orders for Nvidia slowing down.

Nvidia is working on a version of its new flagship AI chips for the China market that would be compatible with current U.S. export controls, four sources familiar with the matter said. The AI chip giant in March unveiled its "Blackwell" chip series, which is due to be mass-produced later in the year. A version of a chip from Nvidia's Blackwell series for the Chinese market would boost the U.S. firm's efforts to fend off those challenges. Expectations are high that the U.S. will continue to keep up the pressure on semiconductor-related export controls.
