Read previewThis as-told-to essay is based on a transcribed conversation with Timothy Schultz, who won the Powerball Lottery in 1999. A few months before I won the $28 million Powerball jackpot, I had a vivid dream that I'd already won. I immediately remembered telling several people I had the winning ticket the night before. A family member explicitly told me I got something for nothing by winning the lottery and should keep giving them and others money. I also started my "Lottery, Dreams and Fortune" podcast where I interview other major prize and lottery winners.

Despite this income, my husband and I have not agreed to — nor do we plan to — pay for the college tuition of our oldest daughter, a sophomore at the University of Iowa. If they spent our money on tuition, we'd need a say in that decision. This decision aligns with our commitment to avoid debt and maintain a healthy financial position, which benefits our entire family. Committing to paying for one child's college education means we must do the same for all of them to maintain fairness. Evaluating whether to pay for our kids' college tuition was a challenging decision, but it's rooted in our desire to foster autonomy, responsibility, and financial prudence.

Medline Industries, a medical supply company, is recalling about 1.5 million portable adult bed rails in the United States and Canada after two reported deaths involving the product, federal safety regulators said. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday that users of the Medline Bed Assist Bar can become entrapped within the bed rail or between the product and the side of a mattress. “This poses a serious entrapment hazard and risk of death by asphyxiation,” the agency said in a statement. “Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled bed rails and contact Medline for a refund.”The commission said that Medline received two reports of deaths associated with the Bed Assist Bars. The deaths took place in July 2019 and November 2023 and involved the entrapment of a 76-year-old woman at a senior nursing facility in Iowa and an 87-year-old woman at a residential care facility in South Carolina, according to the agency.

The 2024 U.S. News & World Report list of the Best Places to Live in the US, which was released Tuesday, ranks 150 major cities based on their quality of life, education, crime rates, employment opportunities, and housing. Business Insider mapped the top 50 best places to live, with the top 15 colored dark blue. Southeastern Florida cities like Miami and Fort Lauderdale normally get most of the love from movers outside the state — or even the country. But this year, it's the western part of the peninsula that's well-represented on the list of best places to live. Many have been moving to Arizona, Florida, Texas, and Washington, citing factors such as high home prices, the climate crisis, and politics.

Unfortunately, when my marriage ended, so did my hopes and dreams of creating that traditional family experience for my son. Now, my son is engaged to the woman of his dreams, and they're creating the family I never could give him. We had a three-story, four-bedroom place for half the price of our condo in San Francisco. The facility we're currently in is only a little more expensive than my rent in San Francisco, and this is 20,000 square feet.

Here’s why we eat popcorn at the movies

But the perfect (and very profitable) pairing of today wasn’t always the case: For many years, movie theaters wanted nothing to do with the snack. People watch movies in a newly reopened AMC River East theater on Aug. 20, 2020, in Chicago. Popular movies often bring collectible cups and popcorn buckets, or, in industry-speak, Collectible Concession Vehicles (CCVs). The cinema business will continue to evolve, but one thing will remain constant, said Gil of Queen’s University. “Theaters will stop playing movies before they will actually stop selling popcorn.”

Opinion | Trump’s Taste for Tyranny Finds a Target

Among the worst episodes in American history are those moments when the federal government deploys the full weight of its power against the most vulnerable people in the country: the Trail of Tears and the Fugitive Slave Act in the 19th century and Japanese internment in the middle of the 20th, to name three. If he is granted a second term in the White House, Donald Trump hopes to add his own entry to this ignominious book of national shame. Trump’s signature promise, during the 2016 presidential election, was that he would build a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico. His signature promise, this time around, is that he’ll use his power as president to deport as many as 20 million people from the United States. “Following the Eisenhower model,” he told a crowd in Iowa last September, “we will carry out the largest domestic deportation operation in American history.”

But college athletes in the House lawsuit say current NIL rules and an “anticompetitive” college system hurt their chances to make money. The possible settlement comes against a backdrop of attitudes toward college athletes receiving payments gradually changing. Earlier this year, members of the Dartmouth College men’s basketball team became the first college athletes to vote to join a union, a significant milestone in the rapidly changing business for collegiate sports.

The tornado had just hit Greenfield, Iowa, and residents were already using skid loaders to clear streets. With the hospital damaged, they took the wounded to a medical triage center at the local lumberyard. And across western Iowa, paramedics and police officers were speeding toward the small town to help. “Everybody became little makeshift ambulances,” said Ray Sorensen, a member of the Iowa House of Representatives who lives in Greenfield, and who said he helped with the rescues after racing back to town shortly after the storm hit on Tuesday afternoon. Kim Reynolds said some areas had been “flattened into debris,” and the National Weather Service reported “at least EF-3 damage” in the town, using the 0-to-5 rating system for tornado severity.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump posted a video on Monday showing images of a fake newspaper article that references a “unified Reich” if he’s reelected in 2024. The video, posted to Trump’s Truth Social account, details “what happens after Donald Trump wins” with a narrator reading hypothetical headlines like “Economy Booms!” and “Border is closed,” styled as World War I-era newspaper clippings. The term “reich” is often associated Nazi Germany under Adolf Hitler, who designated Germany a “Third Reich” from 1933 to 1945. Donald Trump is not playing games; he is telling America exactly what he intends to do if he regains power: rule as a dictator over a ‘unified reich,’” said Singer. Trump has previously played into antisemitic tropes, drawing broad condemnation for lashing out at Jewish Americans he says don’t support him and Israel enough.

Basic income has become a trending strategy to combat poverty in cities nationwide. ARPA funds have been used to partially or fully fund most US basic-income pilots so far, but funds are set to expire. While philanthropy and nonprofit work have been central to basic-income pilots, they are not always a long-term or large-scale funding solution. More GBI programs are electing to focus on specific groups of participants, like low-income parents with children and foster youth. The program is funded through the Temporary Aid to Needy Families Program (TANF), an existing federal cash assistance program for low-income families.
