New York CNN —The Wall Street Journal owes its readers — and the public — better. But an examination of the report reveals a glaring problem: Most of the sources reporters Annie Linskey and Siobhan Hughes relied on were Republicans. Republicans accusing their political foe of lacking the mental fitness to hold office is nothing surprising. Where are the stories about Trump’s former inner circle raising questions about his mental fitness? Happy to discuss Trump’s mental acuity & fitness for office,” Olivia Troye, a former Trump administration official, sarcastically wrote on X.

European chip stock ASML "is almost in a quasi-monopoly position" to drive developments in artificial intelligence over the next decade, according to fund manager Marcus Morris-Eyton. Its customers include TSMC , which makes the AI chips designed by Nvidia , AMD and Intel , as well as Samsung and SK Hynix . Shares fell by 7% on the day as the company provided what analysts labeled "soft" guidance for the current quarter. Earlier this week, the company opened a test laboratory for its next-generation lithography equipment with Belgium chip research firm Imec. "Ultimately, if you need AI, if you need [electric vehicles], if you need data centers, you need more chips," Morris-Eyton added.

However, many of the companies wishing to use generative AI functions and apps today rely on giants like Microsoft and Amazon through their cloud businesses. These so-called "hyperscalers" are buying huge amounts of chips from companies like Nvidia to train up these massive AI models in data centers running complex servers. Kneron is betting that businesses will not always want to rely on these cloud giants for their AI needs. Kneron's launch comes just days after both Nvidia and AMD launched their latest AI chips, with both appearing to ramp up the pace of launches. The products from Nvidia and AMD are aimed at huge data centers from tech giants that can train up massive AI models.

Intel wants to regain its position as the world's leading chipmaker, CEO Pat Gelsinger said, after being overtaken by rivals TSMC and Samsung in recent years. "We want to build everybody's chips, everybody's AI chips. Intel seeks to boost its struggling foundry business, which posted a wider operating loss of $7 billion in 2023 versus the prior year. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company reportedly overtook Samsung in 2023 to become the world's largest foundry by revenue. "The company made a massive switch in its consumer mix," said Sandeep Rao, a senior researcher at Leverage Shares, an investment management company. As for competition, even if Nvidia's contenders appear weak, more entrants will grab market share. Beth Kindig, the CEO and lead tech analyst for the I/O Fund, estimates that AMD's market share could reach 20%. Nvidia and AMD have similar production costs since neither makes their GPUs but uses the same supplier, Taiwan Semiconductor (TSMC). "So AMD is a little bit behind in terms of performance," Rao said.

Taipei/Hong Kong CNN —Nvidia and AMD have separately launched the next generation of their artificial intelligence (AI) chips in Taiwan, as a three-way race with Intel heats up. Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia (NVDA), said Sunday that the company would roll out its most advanced AI chip platform, called Rubin, in 2026. The Rubin platform will succeed the Blackwell, which supplies chips for data centers and was announced only in March. But competition is growing, with major competitors AMD (AMD) and Intel (INTC) introducing new products in an effort to challenge Nvidia’s dominance. The new chip will succeed the MI300 and feature more memory, faster memory bandwidth and better computer performance, Su added.

ASML , the biggest maker of equipment used to manufacture semiconductors, said on Monday it has opened a test laboratory for its High NA EUV lithography equipment, together with Belgium chip research firm Imec. Among chip manufacturers, only TSMC, Samsung, Intel and memory specialists SK Hynix and Samsung are able to manufacture using ASML's current generation of extreme ultraviolet or EUV machines. The new High NA tool allows for up to 60% better resolution, and is expected to lead to new generations of smaller, faster chips. ASML repeated on Monday that it expects customers to begin commercial manufacturing with the tool in 2025-2026. To date ASML has only shipped one other test machine, to Intel in the United States, which plans to use the tool in its 14A process in 2025.

The assessment attributes the elevated casualty rate to Russia's brutal ongoing offensive, noting that Russia's ability to replenish its units is stretched thin due to its consistent losses. According to Friday's intel from the UK Ministry of Defense, the average number of Russian personnel casualties was over 1,200 a day in May, the highest number reported since the war began. The ministry also said the total number of killed or wounded Russian soldiers since the February 2022 invasion is likely at 500,000. It's likely also the result of Russia rushing relatively inexperienced and untrained soldiers into battle, often in bloody head-on assaults. But Russia's high casualties also prevents it from training more capable units and keeping a majority of its troops in battle long enough to gain experience.

The drills started on Thursday, but Taiwan's stock market was little changed over the period. "In this case, the AI equity theme, physical investment in AI, and the wider upturn in electronic component demand are driving robust Taiwanese growth and the strong stock market performance," wrote Green. He added that an outright invasion of Taiwan by China is "very unlikely" due to high military and economic risk. "If the macro backdrop is positive and China remains far from achieving 'fortress-like' economic conditions, future sell-offs may offer attractive buying opportunities," Green wrote.

Seoul/Hong Kong CNN —A labor union representing tens of thousands of workers at Samsung Electronics in South Korea has called a one-day strike next week, in what would be the first such walkout at the smartphone and chipmaking giant. The Nationwide Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) said on Wednesday during a press conference streamed on its official Youtube channel that its 28,000 members — just under a quarter of the company’s total workforce in the country — would strike on June 7, following failed negotiations over pay and bonus arrangements. Son Woomok, leader of the Nationwide Samsung Electronics Union, speaks to CNN on May 29, 2024. The vast majority of the world’s advanced microchips are made in just two places: Taiwan and South Korea. Taiwan’s industry is larger and more dominant, something South Korea is keen to challenge.
