The Pentagon building is seen in Arlington, Virginia, U.S. October 9, 2020. "We don't necessarily see that Iran has explicitly ordered them to take these kinds of attacks," Pentagon spokesperson Brigadier General Patrick Ryder told reporters. Pressed on the issue, Ryder added: "We haven't seen a direct order, for example, from the Supreme Leader saying: 'Go out and do this.'" Ryder, however, said that the United States ultimately holds Iran responsible for such attacks by militant groups "by virtue of the fact that they are supported by Iran." The United States has also sent warships and fighter aircraft to the region to try to deter Iran and Iran-backed groups from widening the conflict.

The defending World Series champion Astros were again felled by a subpar start from Framber Valdez and lackluster play at home. But the Rangers got some insurance from an RBI double by Garver with one out in the eighth off Abreu. Josh Sborz walked Alex Bregman to start the Houston eighth and struck out Alvarez before José Abreu singled with one out. Abreu singled on a grounder to right field before Tucker grounded into a force out that left him out at second and sent Alvarez to third. Heim, who had a career-high 18 home runs in the regular season, also homered off Valdez in Game 2 of this series.

Fain acknowledged some union members want to vote on the offers the union bargainers have in hand. He urged UAW members not to give in to what he called "fear, uncertainty, doubt and division" sowed by the companies. More than 34,000 union members working at the three automakers are on strike since the walkouts began on Sept. 15. The demand included a 20% immediate increase, elimination of different pay scales among UAW workers and restoration of defined benefit pension plans. The GM offer "suggests we may be in the endgame," said University of California Berkeley labor professor Harley Shaiken.

The automaker said the new 23% general wage increase offer represents a 25% compounded wage rise over the life of the agreement, with 10% hike in the first year. The UAW had no immediate comment ahead of a planned Facebook address by its president, Shawn Fain, at 4 PM ET. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said the Marriott Crystal Gateway hotel (MAR.O) in Arlington, Virginia, which has hosted its gathering for more than 10 years, told the group it had received threats. "Anonymous callers have threatened to plant bombs in the hotel's parking garage, kill specific hotel staff in their homes, and storm the hotel in a repeat of the Jan. 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol if the events moved forward," CAIR said Thursday night. Marriott did not confirm specific threats. "Please join ZOA in calling Marriott to demand that they cancel this dangerous CAIR event," the ZOA said in an "action alert" on Thursday. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jose Altuve thrives under pressure for the Houston Astros, able to stay calm in the biggest October moments even after another bench-clearing fracas against the Texas Rangers. “This dude is one of the baddest dudes I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen some greats.”Baker wasn't in the dugout when Altuve hit his 26th career postseason homer, second in major league history behind Manny Ramirez (29). García, Abreu and Baker were all ejected. “The guy hits a three-run homer; the next time up he gets smoked,” Texas manager Bruce Bochy said. The 5-foot-6 Altuve, playing in his 101st postseason game for Houston, then pulled an 0-1 changeup over the left-field fence, just beyond the glove of a leaping Evan Carter.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The streaky Texas Rangers are suddenly headed the wrong way again. The Rangers won the first two in Houston and matched the Astros' 7-0 start in the playoffs last year, when Houston won its second championship. That up-and-down stretch began with Houston sweeping Texas at Globe Life Field, hitting 16 homers while outscoring the Rangers 39-10. Texas played six of its first seven games on the road this postseason, winning twice in Tampa Bay, Baltimore and Houston. Houston has never rallied from a 2-0 deficit, and will have Justin Verlander on the mound for the final game of the series in Arlington.

The youthful playoff infusion is the continuation of one of the best regular seasons for rookie hitters in MLB history. Five rookies — Carter, Carroll, Baltimore’s Gunnar Henderson and Minnesota’s Royce Lewis and Edouard Julien — had OPS totals over 1.000, and Jung wasn’t far behind at .947. “I’d say adrenaline-wise, it’s probably felt about the same as the regular season, maybe a tiny bit more,” Carroll said. It's probably no coincidence that the Rangers started to struggle around the time he got hurt — the third baseman hit 23 homers during the regular season.
