CNN —Three sons of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza Wednesday, an assassination that threatens to complicate ongoing negotiations aiming to secure a ceasefire and hostage deal. The three were killed when the vehicle they were driving in was bombed in the Al Shati refugee camp, northwest of Gaza City, Hamas political leader Haniyeh told Al Jazeera. The Israeli military statement did not mention anyone else being killed in the strike. Palestinian group Hamas' top political leader Ismail Haniyeh speaks during a press conference in Tehran, Iran, on March 26, 2024. More than 33,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the start of the war, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health.

In a statement published early Tuesday, Hamas said the latest deal proposed by Israel does not meet their demands. Hamas said it received the proposal through Egyptian, Qatari and American mediators. While Hamas said it appreciated the effort, the group said Israel “remains stubborn and has not responded to any of the demands of our people and our resistance.”But Hamas maintained it is “keen to reach an agreement that puts an end to the aggression against our people.”The group said its leaders would review the proposal and would eventually inform the mediators of their response. Over the weekend in Cairo, CIA Director Bill Burns presented the new proposal which includes pushing Israel to release a higher number of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the expected 40 Israeli hostages who would be freed during the first phase of a three-stage ceasefire deal.

Hamas said on Tuesday that an Israeli proposal on a ceasefire in their war in Gaza did not meet the demands of Palestinian militant factions, but it would study the offer further and deliver its response to mediators. Other airstrikes were reported in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza and Rafah in the far south. "The movement (Hamas) is interested in reaching an agreement that puts an end to the aggression on our people. Despite that, the Israeli position remains intransigent and it didn't meet any of the demands of our people and our resistance," Hamas said in a statement following the latest ceasefire proposal. It said it would review the proposal further and go back to the mediators with its response.

Qatari, Egyptian and Israeli officials, along with Burns, were in Cairo over the weekend for the negotiations. So far, Israel has rejected the Hamas demands an unrestricted return of Gazans to the north and the redeployment of IDF troops away from central Gaza. Israel has insisted on inspections of Palestinians moving north, a diplomat familiar with the talks told CNN. Mediators have been trying for months to seal an agreement between Hamas and Israel for a ceasefire and the release of hostages. Ansari said mediators are waiting for replies from Hamas and Israel over proposals from different parties, including the United States.

Where it all went wrongEven in the darkness of totality, I wasn't able to spot the "Devil comet" with my naked eye or my camera. But instead, I shot vaguely in the direction of where I thought the comet might be, and only captured darkness. All in all, I learned that photographing a comet with a standard DSLR is tricky. And in general, I wouldn't recommend trying to snap a picture of a comet during a total solar eclipse.

“China is now simply too large for the rest of the world to absorb this enormous capacity,” Yellen told reporters Monday. US intelligence has warned that China is providing technology and equipment to Russia that is important to Moscow’s war in Ukraine. During her last visit to Beijing, Yellen dramatically boosted business for a Yunnan restaurant chain and its mushroom dish after her delegation was spotted dining there. “As a US official, Yellen needs to know more about China than just its food. Only by understanding China better, can she correct the US worldview and its views of China and China-US relations.”

Smoke billows after Israeli bombardment in central Gaza City on March 18, 2024, amid the ongoing battles between Israel and the militant group Hamas. "There is no change in the position of the occupation and therefore, there is nothing new in the Cairo talks," the Hamas official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. In Jerusalem at the weekend, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz described the Cairo talks as the closest the sides have come to a deal since a November truce under which Hamas freed dozens of hostages. Of those, 129 hostages remain, and negotiators have spoken of around 40 going free in the first stage of a prospective deal with Hamas. Two Egyptian security sources and Al-Qahera News said progress had been made in the Cairo talks.

By the time President Biden hung up the phone, he had finally delivered the threat he had refused to make for months: Israel had to change course, he told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, or the United States would take action. But as the conversation ended on Thursday, aides to Mr. Biden said, the president had reason to hope that the message had gotten through and that he would not have to carry out his threat after all. During the call, Mr. Biden outlined several specific commitments he wanted Israel to make to avoid losing his support for the war against Hamas. Rather than pushing back, according to people informed about the call, Mr. Netanyahu promised that he would announce more humanitarian aid for Gaza within hours and signaled that he would respond to Mr. Biden’s other demands in days to come. director, and Egyptian and Qatari intermediaries in Cairo to try again to broker a temporary cease-fire.

The S&P 500 tumbled the first two trading days of the new quarter and is down 0.8% for the week after paring back some of its losses on Wednesday. Some Fed officials revealed at the central bank’s policy meeting last month that they see fewer rate cuts than the three they forecast last December for 2024. Traders see a 63% expectation that the Fed cuts rates in June, a drop from more than 70% a week earlier, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. “With Middle East tensions on the rise, OPEC+ supply side measures have pushed crude oil volatility down,” BofA strategists wrote in a Wednesday report. “Adding to a complex backdrop, we now estimate that improving economic growth expectations have helped push global oil markets into a deficit.”The price of gold has also climbed this week.

New York CNN —Two million Black+Decker steamers have been recalled after more than 80 reports of burn injuries, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday. More than 500,000 of these steamers were already recalled in November 2022, but the recall expanded Thursday to include 1.6 million more. The recall noted that 94 of the 317 reports happened with repaired steamers from the 2022 recall or from models with an updated design. Some customers received a replacement upper assembly as part of the 2022 recall — those customers should receive a refund as well. The steamers were sold in store and online at Walmart, Target, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, as well as other retailers.

Microsoft's security systems are inadequate and need an "overhaul," a government report found. BOSTON (AP) — In a scathing indictment of Microsoft corporate security and transparency, a Biden administration-appointed review board issued a report Tuesday saying “a cascade of errors” by the tech giant let state-backed Chinese cyber operators break into email accounts of senior U.S. officials including Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. It concluded that “Microsoft's security culture was inadequate and requires an overhaul" given the company's ubiquity and critical role in the global technology ecosystem. Three think tanks and four foreign government entities, including Britain's National Cyber Security Center, were among those compromised, it said. Separately, the board expressed concern about a separate hack disclosed by the Redmond, Washington, company in January — this one of email accounts including those of an undisclosed number of senior Microsoft executives and an undisclosed number of Microsoft customers and attributed to state-backed Russian hackers. The board lamented “a corporate culture that deprioritized both enterprise security investments and rigorous risk management.”The Chinese hack was initially disclosed in July by Microsoft in a blog post and carried out by a group the company calls Storm-0558.

Washington CNN —Microsoft committed a “cascade” of “avoidable errors” that allowed Chinese hackers to breach the tech giant’s network and later the email accounts of senior US officials last year, including the secretary of commerce, a scathing US government-backed review of the incident has found. In particular, the review board faulted Microsoft (MSFT) for not adequately protecting a sensitive cryptographic key that allowed the hackers to remotely sign into their targets’ Outlook accounts by forging credentials. The hackers downloaded about 60,000 emails from the State Department alone, department spokesman Matthew Miller has said. Microsoft has “mobilized our engineering teams to identify and mitigate legacy infrastructure, improve processes, and enforce security benchmarks,” the statement continued. Russian hackers allegedly infiltrated software made by US firm SolarWinds to steal emails from US government agencies in 2020.
