The new Perelman Performing Arts Center is the most glamorous civic building to land in New York in years. You may have noticed the building under construction if you were near the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan during the past year or so. A floating, translucent marble cube, it nestles at the foot of One World Trade Center, just eight stories high, a runt in a herd of mega-tall commercial skyscrapers but impossible to miss. Back then, the city was all-consumed by grief and fear, its economy in free-fall, ground zero still a smoldering gravesite. We were reminded just this week of the toll when the names of the thousands of dead were again read aloud.

CNN —The number of first responders who have died from 9/11-related illnesses now almost equals the number of firefighters who died during the terror attacks themselves. A total of 341 New York City Fire Department firefighters, paramedics and civilian support staff who died from post-911 illnesses are now memorialized at the FDNY World Trade Center Memorial Wall, according to the Uniformed Firefighters Association. The memorial commemorates both first responders who died during the attacks and those who died from related illnesses in the years since. That count almost equals the 343 New York firefighters who died during the 2001 attacks. More than 71,000 people are currently enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Registry, a long-term study seeking to understand the physical and mental health effects of the terror attacks.

The criticism comes as Ramaswamy is slated to visit Ground Zero Monday for the tragedy’s 22nd anniversary. “It spits in the face of the thousands of lives that we lost on that day and subsequently,” Hurd said of Ramaswamy’s comments at a campaign stop here. Ramaswamy insists his comments about 9/11 revolve around the FBI’s changing story on Omar Al-Bouyimi. Twenty years after one of the most horrific days in American history, declassified FBI documents revealed Omar Al-Bayoumi, a Saudi national, aided two of the terrorists behind the attacks. “Declassified documents that came out 20 years later from the FBI said that the 9/11 Commission and the FBI absolutely were untruthful about Mohamed al-Bayoumi,” Ramaswamy said.

Smoke pours from the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center after they were hit by two hijacked airliners in a terrorist attack in New York City, Sept. 11, 2001. Two victims who perished in the World Trade Center have been identified more than two decades after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, New York City's chief medical examiner said Friday. The names of the victims, a man and a woman, are being withheld at the request of their families, officials said. They are the 1,648th and 1,649th victims whose remains have been identified since 2001. Dr. Jason Graham, New York City's chief medical examiner, described the painstaking effort to identify the victims' remains as "the largest and most complex forensic investigation" in U.S. history.
