Summer Science Program, a nonprofit with an annual budget of about $2 million, sent about 200 high school juniors to six-week intensive research courses at universities this year. Summer Science Program learned last year that one of its alumni, Franklin Antonio, a co-founder of chipmaker Qualcomm, had granted the organization 20% of his estate, said CEO Frank Steslow. The program intends to double the number of students enrolled next summer to more than 400 and increased its annual budget to over $7 million. Summer Science Program has already received a first payment of $65 million, and the funds are unrestricted. But he added, “it seems unusual at first until you realize that the organization itself is almost like a gift restriction, because they’re very specific in what they do,” referring to Summer Science Program.

LinkedIn debuted an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot Wednesday that it's billing as a "job seeker coach," and unveiled other generative AI tools for Premium members. The new AI chatbot, which aims in part to help users gauge whether a job application is worth their time, is powered by OpenAI's GPT-4 and began rolling out to some Premium users Wednesday. "We had to build a lot of stuff on our end to work around that and to make this a snappy experience," Berger told CNBC in an interview. The chatbot will also point to potential gaps in a user's experience that could hurt them in the job application process. In the past, many uses of AI in hiring or job applications have faced criticism for bias against marginalized communities.

Club holding Broadcom 's (AVGO) investment prospects look bright – with or without cloud software maker VMWare (VMW) under its corporate roof. For now, though, the companies remain apart after Broadcom's planned $61 billion takeover of VMWare did not close Monday, as previously scheduled. AVGO YTD mountain Broadcom YTD With VMWare, Broadcom would be a company with sales split roughly 50-50 between its traditional semiconductor division — an artificial intelligence beneficiary — and software, which typically is higher-margin revenue. Without VMWare, Broadcom would have freed up its capacity to reward shareholders in a different, but still meaningful, way. Even with the buyback silver lining, our hope is Broadcom completes the VMWare deal because it should boost Broadcom's earnings over time.

The new Apple Mac Studio computer and Studio Display are displayed shortly after going on sale at the Apple Store on 5th Avenue in Manhattan, in New York City, New York, U.S., March 18, 2022. Reuters last week reported that Nvidia also plans to jump into the PC market as early as 2025. At Apple, the Mac hit $40.18 billion in revenue for its fiscal 2022, or about 11% of its revenue. While that was up 14% from the previous fiscal year, sales this year have slowed along with the rest of the PC industry, which has suffered a post-pandemic slump. Bajarin said he thinks that supply constraints will lead Apple to focus on higher-end Mac models used by large businesses.

Washington, DC CNN —The Fed’s fight against inflation is about to enter a new phase, but the central bank’s enormous balance sheet will continue to play a key role. The Fed also manages a multi-trillion-dollar balance sheet that accounts for trillions in government securities and lists how much currency is in circulation. For over a year now, the Fed has been steadily shrinking its balance sheet to help cool the economy. The Fed’s balance sheet is currently at around $7.9 trillion, down from its peak of $9 trillion in early 2022 right before the runoff. They also see alternative scenarios for the end of the balance sheet runoff if there isn’t a recession.

Oct 25 (Reuters) - Teradyne (TER.O) reported third-quarter revenue above market expectations on Wednesday, helped by resilient demand for the company's chip-testing solutions. The boom in demand for artificial intelligence chips used in data centers has helped suppliers of chip-testing products like Teradyne offset the weakness in sales of smartphones and personal computers. The company designs and develops technology to test chips and electronic equipment and sells robotic systems to customers in the manufacturing sector. One of its largest customers, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (2330.TW), showed optimism about the demand stabilization in the smartphone and computing markets after beating expectations for third-quarter net profit. Teradyne's net revenue for the third quarter fell around 15%, to $703.7 million, from $827.1 million a year ago, but beat analysts' expectations of $684.6 million.

A smartphone with a displayed Qualcomm logo is placed on a computer motherboard in this illustration taken March 6, 2023. Qualcomm executives said that the company's new Snapdragon Elite X chip will be available in laptops starting next year and has been redesigned to better handle artificial intelligence tasks like summarizing emails, writing text and generating images. Qualcomm will be the first to market with a chip to challenge Apple, whose laptop and desktop computers have more than doubled their market share since the iPhone maker introduced custom-designed chips in 2020. Qualcomm claimed on Tuesday that the X Elite is faster than Apple's M2 Max chip at some tasks and more energy efficient than both Apple and Intel (INTC.O) PC chips. The new silicon includes Qualcomm's X Elite chip for PCs and laptops and the Snapdragon Series 8 Gen 3 for high-end Android phones. The speed at which a smartphone chip processes AI models could represent a new feature battleground between high-end Android phones from companies such as Asus, Sony and OnePlus versus Apple's iPhones, which are also getting new AI features on an annual basis. Now, Qualcomm said, its smartphone chip can handle the bigger AI models used in generative AI — as many as 10 billion parameters. That's still less than some of the biggest AI models, such as OpenAI's GPT3, which has about 175 billion parameters. Qualcomm executives said these kinds of AI models can run on devices if the chips are fast enough and equipped with enough memory.

Oct 24 (Reuters) - Chip design startup SiFive has laid off around 20% of its staff, or about 130 people, the company said on Tuesday. SiFive, based in Santa Clara, California, builds chip designs based on an open chip architecture known as RISC-V, and competes against the recently public Arm Holdings (O9Ty.F), . Like Arm, SiFive builds the underlying designs chips are based on, but not the chips themselves. The company is scaling back its effort to offer customized designs for customers, beyond the standard blueprints that are available. Technology giants such as Qualcomm (QCOM.O) and Alphabet's Google (GOOGL.O) have embraced the underlying RISC-V technology.

The company commands a dominant position in the market for chips used in AI model training. But the question that still lingers in our minds is whether that growth can be substantial enough to meet the lofty, multiyear expectations that became baked into Nvidia's stock price in recent months. Based on the Reuters report, the potential boost to revenue wouldn't arrive for more than a year, and it's unclear what Nvidia's market share would look like then. Another reason for tempered enthusiasm: The gross margins on PC CPUs are typically smaller than Nvidia's data-center chips, a market in which the company has pricing power. Bottom line Nvidia's potential foray in PC CPUs is a development that we'll continue to monitor, but it doesn't put to rest longer-term questions around China.

Apple wants to cut its ties with chip designer Qualcomm but despite years of work and billions of dollars, the company hasn’t been able to build a wireless chip in-house. WSJ reporter Aaron Tilley joins host Zoe Thomas to explain Apple’s spectacular failure in this effort. Many Apple customers may not be familiar with Luxshare Precision or its leader Grace Wang, but they likely own its handiwork. Along with other Apple contractors, Luxshare manufactures AirPods, the Apple Watch and the recently released iPhone 15, including the top-of-the-line iPhone Pro Max. Luxshare is also the assembler of Apple’s first mixed-reality headset, due to reach consumers next year.

Intel stock dropped 3% Monday after Reuters reported that Nvidia and AMD were working on Arm-based PC chips. Intel currently has the majority of the market for PC chips, with AMD coming in second. Intel's PC chips are based on the x86 instruction set. Chips that use the Arm-based instruction set, like those for smartphones, often use significantly less power, which is critical for battery-powered devices. Qualcomm has been working on its own Arm-based PC chips for years, although it has yet to gain significant sales traction.

That's where the bipartisan $52.7 billion CHIPS Act comes in, with a goal of having the U.S. compete once again with countries like South Korea and Taiwan in semiconductors. "The CHIPS Act was a bipartisan recognition that is not an acceptable status quo." There is also funding from the CHIPS Act earmarked for worker development. However, as now more than a year has passed since President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS Act into law, many in the U.S. semiconductor industry are waiting for that money to flow into it.
