New York CNN —If you haven’t filed your 2023 tax return with the IRS yet and you still owe income tax for last year, the good news is you still have time to rectify those situations before you’re penalized for failing to do so. Some, however, get an extra day or two if they live in Maine, Massachusetts or Washington, DC, due to observed holidays. The IRS has also given an extension to individuals and businesses affected by the October 7 terrorist attacks in Israel. Keep in mind that this is only an extension to file your return and avoid a failure-to-file penalty. If you don’t pay what you owe by your tax-filing deadline you will also be hit with a failure-to-pay penalty.

Investors looking for high-quality income, as well as a bargain, should turn to agency mortgage-backed securities, according to UBS. Agency MBS are debt obligations backed by the government and are issued by agencies such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac and Ginnie Mae. However, agency MBS lagged their higher-quality counterparts because they are highly correlated to interest rate volatility, she said. As gross domestic product slowly trends lower, the market will become more comfortable with the likelihood of the Fed cutting rates, Falconio said. Banks, which have been investing excess deposits in Treasurys, will be among those turning to agency MBS, Falconio said.

The Harvard professor's research is bankrolled by tech tycoons "pissed off" at academia's dogma. But this boundary-pushing is exactly why he's backed Loeb's research. A new ETF is trying to capture profits in the municipal funds space. BondBloxx's Joanna Gallegos is behind the IR+M Tax-Aware Short Duration ETF (TAXX) — which launched less than a month ago. "When you think about municipal bond portfolios, you really want people to think beyond them and look for the relative value of after-tax income," the firm's co-founder and COO told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. Gallegos sees actively managed municipal bond exchange-traded funds as an income-generating opportunity in a high rate environment. FactSet describes the fund as "tax efficient" — balancing strong after-tax income opportunities with capital preserved through both municipal and taxable short-duration fixed income securities.

Today's higher rates on CDs aren't going to last , however. For investors contending with maturing CDs, that means they're running out of places to stash their idle cash and still generate an attractive yield. "The issue is reinvestment risk," said Michael Carbone, certified financial planner and financial advisor at Eppolito Financial Strategies in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. That's because once the Fed begins cutting rates, fixed income with longer-dated maturities will allow investors to lock in those higher yields. An opportunity to diversify fixed income In addition to adding exposure to longer-dated bonds, advisors have also been diversifying across different classes of fixed income.

Hogan's political ascendency resulted in large part from his criticism of tax increases that resonated with a tax-weary electorate in his upset victory in 2014. And Hogan, who was originally elected governor by railing against tax increases endorsed by the Maryland General Assembly, has already made the Maryland race unusually competitive in the heavily Democratic state. The Maryland Senate this month largely kept his budget plan intact, despite a drop in revenue estimates announced after the governor submitted his plan. The Senate has been mostly unreceptive to the House plan, with Ferguson ruling out the corporate tax component. He's also ruled out legalizing internet gambling this year, another part of the House plan.

Personal finance education itself is catching on, but is still pretty sparse in American schools. Just 25 states guarantee a standalone personal finance course for students before graduation, according to Next Gen Personal Finance . And there are a number of reasons taxes may not be a part of the curriculum in those programs. "Because people don't have the background in tax law, some people don't know what ordinary income is," Donnellan says. The advertised jackpots aren’t nearly as big as they look. And Powerball says its current jackpot is $935 million. These lottery grand prizes are a fortune, no doubt about that. But truth be told, those mouthwatering advertised jackpot numbers aimed at tempting people to buy tickets are misleading. Thanks to the magic of rising interest rates, the advertised numbers have swelled, while the real value of the current lottery prizes isn’t even half that much.

Whether you're an active cryptocurrency trader or you've dabbled in the word of virtual currency, the IRS wants to know. This year, the term "digital assets" replaced "virtual currencies," which was used in previous years. The IRS defines digital assets as "a digital representation of value recorded on a cryptographically secured distributed ledger or similar technology." It names crypto, stablecoins and non-fungible tokens as examples. "If you're in the crypto space and you do any transactions, it's really hard for you to say no for that question," he tells CNBC Make It.

When each of his eight daughters married, instead of taking a dowry, my grandfather took just a single, symbolic dollar from the groom’s family. I think of my grandfather as Women’s History Month ends and contemplate how his break with tradition changed the history of women in my own family. He might even have played a role in helping change the trajectory for women in Nigeria. I also think about my grandfather whenever I cradle my infant daughter, who my husband and I welcomed into the world in November. For millions of women around the world, outsourcing care for their children or other household duties is not an option.

A large suburban Philadelphia county has joined dozens of other local governments around the country in suing the oil industry, asserting that major oil producers systematically deceived the public about their role in accelerating global warming. The county wants oil producers to pay to mitigate the damage caused by climate change. The county's 31 municipalities will spend $955 million through 2040 to address climate change impacts, the group forecast last year. It said climate change policy is the responsibility of Congress, not local governments and courts. The trial judge, New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, threatened Trump's lawyers with contempt if they again try to bend his strict rules limiting the filing of new pretrial motions. "This Court has the authority to implement measures as necessary to manage its docket and prevent "dilatory tactics" right up until the eve of trial," Merchan wrote. Later on Tuesday afternoon, Merchan made public a March 10 letter from Trump's legal team that appeared to illustrate his concerns. Blanche said that "pretrial publicity" made a fair trial impossible. "President Trump's constitutional right to a fair trial is at stake," Blanche wrote.
