A legal advocacy group said a student-loan company is not carrying out the settlement terms correctly. It said some borrowers within the settlement were told they have to resume payments in October. The federal pause on student-loan payment ended on September 1 when interest began accruing again on borrowers' balances.

Daibes is now a key figure in a sweeping bribery case brought against Menendez, his wife and multiple other associates. Menendez, according to the indictment, then badgered both Sellinger and the prosecutor who had been put in charge of Daibes case, calling them several times. Menendez also asked one of his political advisors to let Sellinger know he was upset with the way the Daibes case was being handled, according to the indictment. Last year, following a delayed trial, Daibes pleaded guilty in his bank fraud case. But his sentencing has been repeatedly delayed and is now scheduled to take place next month.

The U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York is holding a press conference to announce an indictment against U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey and his wife. Menendez and his wife were charged Friday with three counts of conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right. Prosecutors also charged three businessmen: Wael Hana, Jose Uribe and Fred Daibes. The indictment alleges that Menendez promised and moved to disrupt a federal criminal prosecution of Daibes in exchange for money and other items. A lawyer for Arslanian, who also goes by Nadine Menendez, said she denied wrongdoing and would "vigorously defend" against the allegations in court. Arslanian, 56, reportedly met Menendez, 69, at an IHOP pancake restaurant, which the senator has praised as a favorite dining spot. Soon after she met Menendez, Arslanian worked with businessman Wael Hana to introduce the senator, the powerful chairman of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, to Egyptian officials, the indictment said. In May of that year, Menendez sought sensitive information from the U.S. State Department regarding personnel at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, and texted it to Arslanian. She then forwarded it to Egyptian officials, according to the indictment.
