King Charles hosted his first state visit since becoming British monarch on Tuesday, welcoming South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Buckingham Palace. Charles, 74, rolled out the traditional pomp and ceremony for the first time as head of state, as Britain seeks to bolster its relations with its biggest trading partner in Africa. Ramaphosa is scheduled to visit Westminster Abbey to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and see the memorial stone for former South African President Nelson Mandela. The last state visit to Britain by a South African leader was that of President Jacob Zuma in 2010 when he was met by Charles and Camilla at the start of the trip.

NEW YORK — Prince Harry’s memoir, an object of obsessive anticipation worldwide since first announced last year, is coming out Jan. 10. “For Harry, this is his story at last.”The memoir’s title is an apparent reference to Prince Harry’s being a royal “spare,” not the first in line to succession. William, Prince of Wales, is next in line. The 416-page book will come out in 16 languages, from Dutch to Portuguese, and also will be released in an audio edition read by Prince Harry. “Penguin Random House is honored to be publishing Prince Harry’s candid and emotionally powerful story for readers everywhere,” the global CEO of Penguin Random House, Markus Dohle, said in a statement.

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has "been a complicated time" for Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, she said in an interview with Variety published Wednesday. "I’m really grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during that time," Meghan, 41, said. Meghan and Harry traveled from California — where they decamped after stepping back from royal duties in 2020 — to the U.K. to attend the queen’s funeral following her Sept. 8 death. During their trip to the U.K., Harry and Meghan also reunited with Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, at Windsor Castle to pay tribute to the queen and greet mourners. The couple share two children: Archie, born in May 2019, and Lilibet, born in June 2021, who is named after the queen, whose family nickname was Lilibet.

But many campaigners believe King Charles III presents a unique opportunity: They think most royalism was actually fondness for the widely loved queen, and he — a new, less popular king — won't inherit this support.
